If he does ride the tour, I dont think he will finish it - with an eye towards the Olympics and the Madison with Wiggins.

Cavendish just thanked Bennati for letting him through on the right and not making him crash into the barriers. He says he owes him a big favour for being a gentleman. Nice to see some sportsmanship occasionally.
He also said that he will now try and survive the next few days. Whether his team has other ideas or not is a different matter. (taken live off RAI stream).
Yes , Bennati and Cavendish will try to survive to mountains , instead of McEwen who will leave the Giro tomorrow |

Yeah but McEwen will get ruined by doing pointless things like climbing, but for Cavendish (ignoring the olympics) doing a complete tour now is good for later years as sooner or later he will surely target the points in le tour. So the sooner he has to learn to suffer over the climbs for one sprint stage, the better in my opinion. However if you take into account the olympics, i'd be persuaded that he should retire from the race like Robbie.
Also i think ALOT of favourites lost a minute today. The stage times were to be taken at 3km out for those who didn't know, but the break occured at 4km out, and a minute was quickly lost. I think the organisers may wipe out the time gap like yesterdays stage, but if they don't, could be interesting...

But I am happy. I have been waiting two years when new boys will beat Petacchi and McEwen..well sprinters generation change has finaly started.
Well... it's between him and Bennati for "best". I guess Bennati has it due to winning the photo finish yesterday.
I know many are going to say it's not a big deal beating McEwen and Zabel... how the two have finally started to show their ages. Perhaps they're right.
But at this point the only sprinters you might question putting Cav on the same level as would be the true elite. Maybe Hushovd, Friere, Boonen and Pettachi before he had his... issues. And even if he's below... I think you'd have to rate him in the next tier. |

I belive Petacchi years are also over..Bennati looks great candidate to take over Cipo and Petacchi job..to be future Giro sprint ace.
Boonen will be out again this year to take TdF green..he has so far great year. Will be hard to beat him on that mission.
Zabel is great...I belive he was one of the cleanest sprinters at his time. |

Didn't Zabel admit to doping to win one of his TDF greens? I seem to remember something to that effect in this last years tour. |

There doesn't look like there will be much competition for Boonen in the Tour de France. Unless Freire doesn't get injured and manages to get in top-form. I don't believe Hushovd has what it takes to win the green jersey this year, and there isn't really anyone that comes to mind other than Boonen and Friere.
As for the Giro, it seems that Bennati will dominate future Giro sprints. But I doubt it will be to the standard of Cipo and Petacchi.

I would agree with that. But still be nice to see him give it a go. I guess he will aim for that next year. But this year would be a good race for him to ride as there would be a chance he might get a day in yellow with the first stage not being a time trial. |

I consider Cavendish a better sprinter than Boonen and Hushovd in terms of top speed. on the level of Steegmans, perhaps. Better than Freire? doubt it very much. Same with Petacchi, but then again, Petacchi seems to be done like dinner.
Freire in top form is downright scary. watch any replay of Freire in top form and you'll notice he's at top speed after one pedal stroke. that's right, one. And considering his top speed is one of the best, the man has to be the top sprinter in the world right now, in my mind.
As for Zabel, he said he took EPO during the Tour de Suisse in 1996 but stopped because the side effects were scaring him.

Zabel admitted using EPO, was ahuge thing here. But heck, evryones prepared to forgive Ete here. As for the discussion, Freire is imo surely the best sprinter atm. Not only in terms of speed, but also as an allrounder. Zabel is past his peak, but he was surely the best in his prime. As for Bennati, he is already better than Petacchi and Cipollini imo, partly also because of his (for a sprinter) amazing ability in the mountains. I think that's definitely something you need to win a green jersey (like Zabel f.e.). That's why Cipollini never would have won the Green jersey. And btw, I think Hushovd has better chances for Green in the Tour than Boonen.

I think I've just diagnosed myself with cycling fever.
The symptom:
My girlfriend was going on and on about some random subject and all the while my mind is going "Will they attack on the Passo Manghen? since it's the first day in the mountains, they may hold back. on the other hand... (etc.)"
I need to go see a doctor |

Contador
Kloden +0:42
Ricco +1:33
Di Luca +1:21
Menchov +1:58
Simoni +1:58
Leipheimer +2:11
we'll see how tomorrow turns out. Can't wait. There's a chance it could just break up on the first climb...esp with Di Luca and Ricco in there. If it does...this should get really interesting.
I have menchov fading as well as kloden. Contador...just dont know. I think levi will be solid.

It depends on the attitude of the favorites. If they're fearful because it's the first mountain stage, they'll wait until the final climb.
If they start upping the pace immensely on the Passo Manghen, now that would be great. And I'm betting on a Riccò or Di Luca attack on the Manghen.
I think you're severely underrating Simoni, but we'll see. I also think Di Luca is going to lose more than Ricco. |
