@ FreitasPCM: Intersting ... But the first hint was that he is quite an alrounder. Don't know if that fits for Veelers. More guesses are very welcome!
@ Batista: Thanks, that's great to hear! The stages are really well-made and well suited for nice screenshots. I try my best there, glad you like it!
@ sutty: Yeah, it seems like it really paid off to leave out some smaller races and peak specifically for the Vuelta. Most other rivals (except for Valverde) lose shape with every day while Nibali still has less than 60 race days.
Questions:
Your opinion is asked for: I'm currently thinking about two things and I haven't quite made my mind yet, so I would be grateful for your input:
1. I'm not sure how to proceed with Contador. Shall I suspend him just like in RL, and if yes, for a whole 2 years? Or shall I seperate RL and the game? Because after all, this story is fiction... I feel like I prefer to let him ride, on the other hand suspending him would make the big races much more interesting. No one even comes close to him as a stage racer. Also, Nibali had better chances for a possile Tour start
2. I think about a small rule changement. How would you feel about changing the rules for promotion / relegation as follows: The only thing that matters is the CQ Ranking. The Top 18 of that ranking of one season will be in WorldTour next season. That would have the advantage that if there are three really strong Conti teams, all of them could suceed, or if there is just one strong Conti team, I wouldn't have to promote a weak one. On the other hand, the World Tour races would lose quite a bit of their importance. They would still be important as they deliver many CQ points, but the WT ranking wouldn't matter anymore.
What do you think?
As promised, here's a review of the Vattenfall Cyclassics. GP Ouest France and a small bit of Cycling News follow tomorrow, then the Vuelta reports continue.
The Vattenfall Cyclassics are the only German World Tour race. Firstly held in 1996, it was named HEW Cyclassics until 2005. Record winner is Tyler Farrar, who is the only one who could win on the course through Hamburg more than once.
The course is almost completely flat. Only the Waseberg, which is passed five times, offers the opportunity for a puncheur to decide the race in his favour.

Favorites
Garmin has two of the top favorites in Hushovd and Farrar. T-Mobile and Quick·Step challenge them with strong squads. Rouleurs like Pozzato or Chavanel have outside chances.
Team Liquigas
We have no ambitions here. We hope for a nice sprint result with either Cimolai or Dall'Antonia but both aren't in top shape at the moment, so we'll see. We don't expect much.
Report
A four men break around Yohan Offredo (FDJ) dominated the TV coverage today. They got a maximum gap of 7'30 which was quickly reduced. Within the last 50 kilometers, several minor puncheurs like Bernhard Eisel or Sebastien Turgot (Europcar) tried their luck but the sprinter teams didn't let them go.
With 25 kms, the big guns made their moves. Chavanel, Nuyens, Flecha and Ballan went for it. Tony Martin accompanied them as well. They soon reach the break, and Nuyens, Chavanel and Flecha quickly overtook them while the other were caught. After a while, Chavanel could get rid of the other two and with 10 kms, he held a gap of 55 seconds over the peloton, which only consisted of 34 riders only. Dall'Antonia and Juraj Sagan were still present but very tired.
And by and by, it became obvious, that the pack would not catch up with the front. Chavanel entered the last kilometer alone while Flecha had Nuyens' wheel in the sprint for the second place. He overtook him easily and if he made his move earlier, he could have even reached Chavanel.
Boonen wins the sprint for the fourth place in front of Breschel and Hushovd. Dall'Antonia lost contact to the bigger group and finishes 35th.

The Winner
The change to Leopard was obviously the best that could happen to Sylvain Chavanel. He had an awesome season: Third places at De Ronde and Paris-Roubaix, Top 10s at Milan-San Remo and Gent-Wevelgem, but it took until August for his first win (a stage win in the Eneco Tour). With his second, and bigger, win now, he also secures Leopard's lead in the World Tour ranking in front of Liquigas, who couldn't score today.
Liquigas Resumé
Well, not much to say. Our riders weren't good enough today, and they also had a bad daily shape. As we didn't expect anything, we're not disappointed either.
ABout your questions:
1. Contador: or do the same like I did, fire him from Saxo and find out where he will sign next year. Else, I wouldn't change your story into RL.
2. CQ-ranking: good idea!
3. Your signing: What about Klöden, as he wishes he isn't German Have no idea who you're gonna sign.
I'd say suspend Contador. Would make the GT's very interesting as you said. And I also really like your idea about the ranking. Do it is all I'll say.
Last, but not least, the new signing. I have a guess who I think fits the given clues pretty well.
The rider I'm thinking of is Michael Rogers, for several reasons. The main one is that he's pretty well known in Germany after his years with T-Mobile a few years ago. I'm not sure, but I guess he should still be quite popular down there nowadays.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, he was very strong at the Giro earlier this season. That would explain the first clue, that the rider has has developed a lot in the recent time, and is now one of the best allrounders in the field.
So, any chance your new signing is an Aussie?
Edited by Pellizotti2 on 11-03-2012 17:57
Thanks for the responses so far. The CQ Ranking thing seems to be well received and as I liked the idea as well, I guess I'll do that. More opinions on the Contador case would be appreciated.
About your guesses: Klöden is an interesting guess but still he's German so no. And Pelli, your quite close with several points... But not Rogers...
Here's the GP Ouest France, much better for us than Vattenfall.
The Grand Prix de Ouest France - Plouay is surely one of the minor World Tour races. It has a very long history, though, dating back to 1931, and is part of the Pro Tour since the its beginning in 2005. Despite its long existence, no rider could win it more than twice. Most recent winners are the likes of Carlos Sastre and Matthew Goss.
The course is a hilly criterium around the city of Plouay. Lots of small but very steep ascents await the riders and over 232 kms, that will cost a lot of energy. Positioning is a very important factor here. The outcome is rather uncertain as both a pure puncheur and a punchy sprinter might be able to win here.

Carlos Sastre celebrated a big and surprising win here last year which already gave a hint on his spectacular Vuelta performance later on. Peter Sagan did very well with a third place.
Favorites
The starting field is way more exclusive than last year. In the Schleck brothers and Damiano Cunego, some of the world's best puncheurs are here. But both begin their late season after a long break so we have to see how good their shape is. Maybe an outside bet like Pozzato or Devenyns has a chance?
Team Liquigas
Cunego would be the top favorite under normal circumstances here. But as I said above, his shape is not more than average. Hilly races like this are always hard to predict, range is from nothing to a Top 3 result. We would be happy with a Top 5 and disappointed with anything worse than a Top 10.
Report
Throughout the first kilometers, many riders tried to attack but the pack rode a furious pace and didn't let anyone go. After about a third of the race, an eight men group broke free, with the surprise members Fränk Schleck and Andreas Klöden. Katusha and Liquigas controlled them, though, and they were caught again with 40 kms to go.
The high pace was too much for many riders and by and by, the main group reduced. First to 50, then to 30 riders and when Luis Leon Sanchez launched the first serious attack with 20 kms to go, only 20 riders were able to follow. But that shouldn't be it:
Eventually, only 13 riders crossed the last steep ascent before the finish together. On the very top, Filippo Pozzato attacked and used the descent to create a notable gap. Cunego relied on the other teams to close it but realized too late that he would have to react himself. He attacked with 2,5 kms to go and got away pretty easily but his compatriot was too far away. The second place is still a fantastic result for the first race after the break. Dries Devenyns surprises a bit with a strong third place, winning the sprint of the rest.
The Garmin rider is an overlapped one who decided to spoil the photo.

The Winner
The Italian had a decent season with Top 10s in all the important spring classics from Milano - San Remo to De Ronde. But the really big win was missing. With his courageous attack, he could score it today and celebrates his recent contract prolongation.
Liquigas Resumé
We achieved more than we hoped for. Damiano performed really, really strong in his first autumn race, that raises the hopes for more. The rest of the team didn't do anything but once Damiano was alone, they all relaxed. In total, a very good day for the team.
Well, I'm keeping quiet on the transfer front from now on. One hint is still to come and the final announcement will be there after the Vuelta has finished.
Thanks for the compliments, especially @poiup11!
But I would be even happier with some more opinions on the question in the first post of this page.
Your welcome Well, i think that you should keep Contador in the game or suspend him for one year. I could be pretty nice to see Nibali in the Tour - and Nerz of course! But two years without Contador I would find sad, sort of. It's a very hard question... If you go for the Tour with Nibali, next year, when suspend him for one yeah. That could be a really spectacular to follow, In my opinion.
2. I think you should do wthat you think is best. I you want to do it, I think you should do! Everything to keep up your motiavtion, is good for me, and i think that the other, who follows, think the same.
I hope it's fine. I don't hope i forgot something
And i would just say that it's not very often I comment, but i'm reading very often, when i am online
The Italian shoe manufacturer Geox is done: Since the promotion for World Tour is failing for the second year in a row now, despite having the strongest squad in continental circuit, the company decided to cease their sponsorship for the cycling team. CEO Diego Bolzonello stated: „The team simply couldn't match our expectations. We are not willing to finance a third year in the Continental Division, especially after Fabio Duarte couldn't be convinced to stay.“ Big names like Denis Menchov and Juan José Cobo, currently sixth in the Vuelta, are now free for the next season.
The duo Menchov and Sastre was supposed to lead Geox to World Tour. They failed, and now the team has no future.
On other team news: The Kazakh government, main sponsor of Astana, announced that the team is going to change their strategy dramatically. After the top riders Ventoso, Kiserlovski and above all national icon Alexandre Vinokourov decided to leave the team after this season and no adequate substitution could be signed, they will voluntarily give up their World Tour spot. The prominent cyan jersey will be seen next year again, though, as team will continue to exist but rather concentrate on develop and foster young Kazakh talents. Riders with higher ambitions are free to go.
Vinokourov's leaving was probably the main reason that Astana didn't see any possibility to remain in World Tour.
I don't know what prompted the organisation to classify this stage as hilly. For the first part, that may fit, but the last ascent, at least on the paper, looks like a veritable mountain top finish. There should be some notable time gaps today.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
Another very tough stage. Luckily not as long as yesterday which is why we'll try to send someone into the break, preferably Marcato or Caruso. On the last ascent, we'll try our best, as always: Nibali might aim for another stage win, the rest of us will support him and then ride for themselves as best as possible.
Live Ticker
Km 3:
Damiano Caruso follows Joost Posthuma and attacks.
.
Km 15:
Twelve men found themselves a minute in front of the pack but more riders are attacking.
.
Km 20:
And so everything is back together.
.
Km 28:
But he tried it again and now, on the first climb, he leads with three minutes to the pack. With him is FDJ's Mourey, a bigger group is behind them.
.
Km 49:
Over the top of the first climb, four riders caught up with the leading duo. No one cares for the mountain points.
.
Km 88:
Since the first mountain, the advance of the group was pretty constant between 8 and 9 minutes. Now, between the second and the third climb, the pack slowly increases the pace.
.
Km 116:
The pace starts to thin out. Only 80 riders are left before the second to last climb. All major riders are present.
.
Km 143:
Despite having Caruso in a good position up in front, Liquigas increases the pace now on the penultimate ascent. Many GC rivals are in bad positions in the last part of the field and this could be a good chance to gain some time on them.
.
Km 161:
The move wasn't successful. All GC contenders are among the 55 riders that enter the last 20 kms together. The last four escapees around Caruso are only a minute in front.
.
Km 165:
GC's 8th, Cristophe Le Mevel, tries an early attack.
.
Km 173:
But soon, no rider is left in front of the pack. 13 kilometers to go.
.
Km 174:
Now Rodriguez goes and Anton follows! That could become really dangerous. Sagan immediatly starts the chase.
.
Km 176:
Under the pace of Szmyd and Nibali, the first group of chasers thins out. Sagan and Nerz fall back but Nerz looks quite relaxed and rides at his own pace. Rodriguez and Anton are already a minute in front but almost 10 kms are yet to go.
.
Km 178:
Nibali simply rides away! He looks great. Kessiakoff attacked along with him, Valverde tries to come from behind.
.
Km 178:
Nerz leads a group including Sagan and Szmyd but while Nerz looks pretty good, the other two are very tired.
.
Km 180:
With 6 kms to go, Nibali reached the leading duo followed by Kessiakoff and Valverde. Sanchez follows in a group a minute behind. It looks good for Nibali.
.
Km 182:
Nibali continues to pace and Anton can't follow anymore! What a demonstration!
.
Km 182:
Nerz (16th) is in a group with Ruijgh (17th), Kern (19th) and De Weert (20th), his direct rivals. He looks quite good at the moment and could fight for a Top 15 today.
.
Km 185:
The sprint starts and Nibali pulls away! Will this be his second stage win in a row?
.
Km 185:
Behind him, Nerz attacks his companions...
.
Km 186:
Nibali wins indeed and gains a whole lot of time: + 26' on Rodriguez, + 1'06 on Anton, + 1'35 on Valverde, who finishes seventh, and even + 2'09 on Samuel Sanchez!
.
Km 186:
Nerz finishes on a fantastic 13th place behind Matthias Frank. He gains almost two minutes on Peter Sagan and increases his chances on white!

Dominik's Comment
Wow! What a day! Fantastic! This might well have been my best climbing performance ever. Luckily, and in contrary to Sylverster and Peter, I didn't have to do any work and I could simply climb at my own pace. I fell back a little earlier but afterwards, I overtook rider after rider and even had enough energy left to attack at the end.
For the team, the day was great mostly because of Vincenzo. What this guy is doing at the moment is sheer superhuman! No one seems to stand a chance, although he said to me that today he felt as good as almost never before. And he really made the most of it. He has more than five minutes on Sanchez and Rodriguez now. After half of the race he already has it more or less in his bag.
As for my private duell with my friend Peter, I showed him today who's the better climber ;-) I am only 36 second behind him now, so white is a realistic goal again.
I'd also like to draw your attention to the team classification. We constantly are the best team here and lead already with almost a quarter hour to Euskaltel, who at least on the paper are a really strong team. I'm very proud of what we are doing here at the moment.
Tomorrow's a flat stage so it should be a calm day for me. Greetings,
This Vuelta should be decided by now, great ride by Nibali. And not to forget Dominik, excellent climbing (although you had the luck not to do hard work for Nibali). White is within reach!!
One of the very few really flat stages of this Vuelta. We would normally expect a bunch sprint here but it wouldn't be the first time that a breakaway came through during this Vuelta.
Dominik's Pre-Race Comment
We want a rider in the break today. Especially with the hills midway through the stage and considering the first few stages of the Vuelta, a breakaway win is anything but impossible. If it comes down to a sprint, we'll try our best with Peter and Mauro.
Live Ticker
Km 13:
The first attackers have a hard time since Movistar and Vacansoleil are chasing.
.
Km 28:
Marcato waited until everyone got caught again and now follows Gaetanis Smukulis. Valery Buts attacks as well.
.
Km 66:
17 riders are split in several groups in front of the pack but even the last of these groups has more than four minutes on the pack.
.
Km 87:
All those riders came together at the first mountain sprint and are five and a half minutes in front of the pack. Prominent names are the national champions Chainel, Bazayev and Martens as well as O'Grady and Posthuma.
.
Km 119:
Vacansoleil, Movistar and Unicef are chasing the break down. The Americans even send Valverde to the front – but for who? They have no sprinter at all? Their work has an impact, though, with 28 kms, the break is only two minutes away.
.
Km 136:
But the escapees fight hard! Under the 10 kms banner, they're still a bit more than a minute in front! Geox and Garmin are chasing, Liquigas keep calm.
.
Km 138:
Strange enough, the pack slowed down a lot. Serguei Ivanov attacks.
.
Km 144:
Marcato is in a good position as the sprint for the win starts. De la Parte leads in front of Posthuma.
.
Km 146:
Marcato can't overtake De la Parte. On the left, Barry has a good speed with Gaudin on his wheel.
.
Km 147:
But it's Paul Martens who takes the win, eventually pretty easily. Buts finishes second while Marcato has a fantastic late punch and comes in fourth, his third Top 5 from a breakaway, amazing!
.
Km 147:
Finetto wins the bunch sprint in front of world champion Allan Davis. But in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Dominik's Comment
Another pretty decent day for us. Once again, we, or to be more precise, Marco Marcato, made the jump into the right break and again, he finished it very nicely. Fourth is a good result on this stage for our team.
The bunch sprint was won by Mauro, but well, for 19th spot no one cared. We took it easy in the peloton, and were surprised that the other teams did so as well. There aren't many sprint stages in this race...
But anyway, tomorrow's another flat/hilly stage, maybe something for Peter. See you,
