Stage 3 and we enter the mountains. The route from La Vall d'En Bas to La Seu d'Urgell is 173 kilometres long and finishes at the summit of the Vallnord. Not the steepest climb in Spain, but difficult enough to shake up the GC.
And with that many climbs and theeby KOTM-points to be collected, Rob Ruijgh goes in the attack. He gets accompanied by Dimitri Champion (AG2R), Pablo Lastras (Movistar), Laurent Lefevre (AG2R), Dmitriy Muravyev (Astana), Leonardo Piepoli (Androni), Enrique Salgueiro (Caja Rural) and Nicki Sorensen (Saxo Bank). Ruijgh wins the sprint for the first KOTM-sprint at the Alt de Coubet. The peloton follows at 2'21.
At the Collada de Toses, Ruijgh gets beaten by Muravyev and Lastras. With 76 kilometres remaining, the leaders start to believe in the stage win, as their gap to the peloton is 7'17.
But the hope can be thrown away, because of the high pace by Team Sky in the valley towards the penultimate climb, the Alt de la Massana. 3 kilometres before the summit (and 20 before the finish), GC-leader Rigoberto Urán attacks out of the peloton. He's only '40 behind the leaders and has created a '36-gap to the peloton very quick!
Urán flies by the leading group and is the first atthe summit. 17 kilometres to go and he leads Champion and Ruijgh (who has secured himself of the KOTM-jersey after the stage) with '41. The peloton, with the Euskaltel-team in the lead, follows at 1 minute.
There's no descend after th eprevious climb, but the riders continue on a tableau. When the last climb to Vallnord has started, Urán is able to defend his lead. With only 5km to go, he leads Igor Antón by '52 and the peloton by 1'03.
And now you're probably wondering how Thomas Dekker is doing? Well, not good. He had some difficulties in keeping in a good position before and in the climb of the Alt de la Massana, and after the summit, he could not make up and is struggling. A bad daily form (-1), is the reason he can forget a Top 3 in the GC, as with only 2km to go, he's 1'28 behind Urán.
Meanwhile, Antón has almost closed the gap to Urán as they have entered the final kilometre.
But Antón has spend most of his energy in the chase, and gets easily outsprinted by Urán. So it's the 2nd stage win by the Colombian talent, whom even extends his lead in the GC with 10 more seconds.
Dario cataldo and Benat Intxausti manages to finish in front of the first "peloton" in 3rd and 4th place. Than a group with Bertagnolli, Fuglsang, Frank, Navarro, Barredo, Horner, Sella, Porte and Serpa finishes at 1'38. Thomas Dekker finishes in the 2nd group at 1'56 in 21st position, together with Nieve, Gerdemann, Löfkvist, Carrara, Riblon and others.

The good thing this stage was Ruijgh getting the KOTM-jersey, the bad (or disappointing) thing was the 21st place of Dekker. Maybe we (and especially himself) expected too much. For sure, Urán seems unbeatable here!
baia wrote:
Actually i like those day feellings...Ruijgh is doing good, hope he can win that jersey...Dekker will improve his ranks....just needs a better day..
In my career, Gesink felt good during the whole Dauphine, exept in the only mountain stage... he had -5. But hey, you can turn them of!
Guess who's back?
Lets see how many friens are still around...
Stage 4 is from Oliana to Ascó. The most part of the route is a little downhill, so we expect a mass sprint here.
To be sure not to have to chase the leading group, we send someone in today's BOTD. This time it's Tom Dumoulin, and it must be one of the first times he actually makes it in a BOTD. Together with Pablo Lastras (Movistar), Frantisek Rabon (Omega Pharma), Albert Timmer (Sony Ericsson), Danilo Wyss (BMC), Raffaele Farrara (Farnese), Oleg Cuzhda (Caja Rural), Yuriy Krivtsov (AG2R), Enrico Zen (Androni), Daniele Righi (Lampre) and Fabio Duarte (Nespresso) he forms a 11-man BOTD that gets a maximum advantage of 8 minutes.
But disaster happens for Dumoulin as he gets a puncture with 75 kilometres to go. Luckily for him, Righi has crashed, so the 2 can try to close the 1'30-gap to the leading group.
At the summit of the only categorized climb of the day, the Alt De Passanant, the 2 are only a minute behind. Farrara is the first at the summit, 60 kilometres before the finish.
Dumoulin does most of the work in the chase and can close the gap to the leading 9. 10 kilometres before Ascó, they're still 1'40 in front of the peloton, so the breakaway wil fight for the win today. Although Dumoulin knows he isn't the best sprinter in the group, he feels that the chase after the puncture has cost him too much energy and he's trying to hold on. Righi has been dropped, so he's sure of a top 10-place.
The sprint has started and Dumoulin is already in last place. No chance for the win... That battle is between Pablo Lastras and Frantisek Rabon.
And the win goes to Movistar! Lastras is the best in the sprint and takes his first win in almost 2 years. Rabon gets 2nd, Duarte 3rd and Dumoulin 10th. The peloton finishes at 1'41
The next picture is to show my frustration. The right one of the 2 Monster-riders is Marcel Kittel. He has Sp 80, was on an aggressive sprint at 99, with still some colours in the energy bar left. On the left you see Thomas Dekekr. He has Sp 63, was just on following sprint (>S) at 70. And guess who's going faster???? Yep, Dekker.................. Is there any way to prevent this focked up thing, or do I just have to deal with it????

Word from the DS
Dumoulin did a great job today, but what if he hadn't got the puncture and wasn't be forced to waste his energy. But to be realistic, a top 3 would be pretty impossible.
that is a strange pcm bug... With pcm 2009, in the vuelta, M. Cavendish was riding his second GT, first was Giro. Farrar both raced Giro, tour and now the vuelta. He beats Cavendish in the little uphill sprint (about 0.2%), what is quite strange: Farrar's hill"55, Cav: 57
anyway, good job by Dumoulin and good luck!
Guess who's back?
Lets see how many friens are still around...
Haha, this really is bad luck!
But you should see it as a chance, with Dekker used as sprinter and Kittel as stage racer you maybe have even more opportunities!
Good luck for the next stages, may at least Dumoulin leave a good impression for your team!
Still good chances for top10 in GC,pity for Dumoulin,i think he would have won this stage....about the sprint, well,i think it has a little to do with the fact Dekker was protected from the wind,Kittel was in open...
The 5th stage brings us from Ascó to Cabacés. It is considered as a hilly stage, but not difficult enough to create some differences in the GC.
Again, we are in the BOTD. As there are some KOTM-points to be divided, Rob Ruijgh tries to be in it, and with success. He is the first at the summit of the Alt de Faxes, followed by Inigo Cuesta (Caja Rural), Jésus Herrada (Movistar), Geert Omloop (Omega Pharma), Donato Cannone Androni), Rinaldo Nocentini (AG2R), Rémy Di Gregorio (Sony Ericsson), Raffaele Ferrara (Farnese), Amaël Moinard (BMC), Tadej Valjavec (Astana) and Arkaitz Durán (Nespresso).
Ruijgh also wins the 2nd KOTM-sprint and secures himself of the overall KOTM-win, he only has to finish the Volta by now! With 75km to go, the lead of the BOTD is almost 4 minutes.
As the lead of the BOTD is still over 3 minutes with 30 kilometres to go, the riders in the BOTD start to believe in the stage win. This is the sign for Tadej Valjavec to attack on a little uphill part of the road. As he is one of the strongest riders in the leading group, Ruijgh decides to counter attack. Can te 2 make it to the finish?
Unfortunately not. The last 25 kilometres are slightly downhill, so it's easy for the chasing riders to catch the 2 again. After that, we see another attack, this time by oldie Inigo Cuesta. He has a small lead with 5km to go, but it won't be enough. The peloton is over 4 minutes behind.
Cuesta gets caught, so it's a 11-man sprint for the win. Ruijgh has chosen the wheel of Jésus Herrada, on paper the best sprinter in this group.
...But not on the road! Belgium Geert Omloop takes the win for his Omega Pharma-team, beating Cannone and Nocentini. Ruijgh does an excellent job and finishes in 5th place.
Thomas Dekker has attacked out of the peloton in the last few kilometres and finishes in 12th place, 4'17 behind the BOTD. As you can see, he has a gap over 100 metres to the peloton, but of course the tour-direction is sleeping and decides to give them all the same time.

Today's winner
Word from the DS
Great job again by Ruijgh, who has secured himself of the KOTM-jersey! And we are really pissed at the Tour Direction that they didn't awarded Dekekr with some time-win, and even protested against it. But that one was denied....
The 6th stage from El Vendrell to Barcelona is over 200 kilometres long and considered a hilly stage. But again, it's not difficult enough to create some changes in the GC.
These 6 riders are the lucky ones that will fight for the stage win. Again, a breakaway stays out of reach for the peloton and Santo Anza (Vacansoleil), Elia Favilli (Farnese), Bert Grabsch (Omega Pharma), Thibault Pinot (AG2R), Ivan Santaromita (BMC) and Rafael Valls (Nespresso) are the members of the BOTD and prepare themselves for the sprint.
A crash in the peloton 10 kilometres before the finish brings 35 riders down to the tarmac, including Tom Dumoulin. 2 of them have to leave the Volta with some serious injuries: Paolo Tiralongo with a fractured hand and Marcello Wyss with a dislocated elbow. No GC-contenders were involved.
And just as yesterday, Thomas Dekker tries to gain some seconds with a late attack. But again, fruitless...
The sprint of the leading group, and thereby the stage win, is easily won by Farnese's Elia Favilli. He takes his first win on over 2 years, beating Santo Anza and Thibault Pinot.
Daryl Impey (Qantas) wins the sprint of the peloton at 3'21.
