he attacked nibali and probably thought that would be enough to stay away from him so he slowed back to his normal mountain climbing rhythm. even contador can't ride at his attack pace all the time. Nibali caught him so contador attacked him again. whats unsporting about that?
This may well be precisely what happened yes - maybe Contador did just assume his attack was enough (he did gain a 5+ second gap very very quickly) and then underestimated Nibali's ability to come back, just depends on your personal opinion of Contador really - and you can certainly see why Nibali wasnt happy.
But yes, I was saying all through the climb that Contador was not trying particularly hard and was just tactically sitting on the back of the Italians. Its just a shame for the race that the race leader isnt willing to make a full effort for more than a few hundred metres at a time, and even more of a shame for the race that this much effort is still good enough for him.
it is a shame that the giro won't be as exciting as previous years.
but you can't blame contador for that. he's simply doing what he needs to to win by using as little energy as possible. it's just a shame that it's been so easy for him so now he doesn't have to do anything else to win.
it's up to the others to attack him, not the other way around.
If your tactic is to conserve energy, then sit on his wheel all the way up.
If you want to behave like a d*ck, then as Nibali says "He attacked. I really think it was a lack of respect from him when he waited for me and attacked again."
He's controversial enough as it is without behaving like that.

It was distasteful - plain and simple.

so now attacking is considered gamesmanship
it's tactics. Contador has earned the right to sit in after his ATTACKS last week. now he has a practically unassailable lead and can let the others do the work. why should contador help nibali chase Anton or put time into Scarponi?
according to you he should carry on attacking at the bottom of the mountain just so he's not called a cheat. what would that do other then deaden his legs for the Tour?
i would do exactly the same thing in his position.
Calm down, ringo and try to remain consistent. Here's a smiley for you, too.
The point you made before was "he's simply doing what he needs to to win by using as little energy as possible."
Attacking twice in the final kilometer doesn't really follow then does it? Like Nibali, the manner of the attacks to me showed a lack of respect.
As I said, nothing wrong with letting others do the work, that's tactics and will always be done. He's not been criticized for that. Don't know where you've got he should attack at the bottom of the mountain at all from. Go ahead and post a random comment again in response.....

whats random about it.
yes he attacks in the last k. not exactly the same as attacking earlier or helping nibali set the pace is it?
i would say that sitting in and attacking in the last k is the most energy efficient way of winning the giro from his position.
Nibali is just bitter because he knows that even at his best he can't touch contador. he's just trying to stir up the anti-contador feeling in italy.
i just think it's the anti-contador feeling meaning that whatever he does he's going to get critisised. if he attacked everyday and won the giro by 20 mins you'd say he was being disrespectful because he's taking the piss.
if he sat on nibali's wheel all the way to the top you would say he's being boring and should attack. if he attacks in the last k then apparently he's being disrespectful although i don't understand how that is being disrespectful. surely it's showing respect because he's showing he still needs to put time into Nibali because he knows how good he can be in the mountains.

For some experts, it isn't. But then again, only the BEST knew what Rujano could do.
