Amgen Tour of California (2.HC) ![i.imgur.com/zMBJxFz.png](https://i.imgur.com/zMBJxFz.png) Stage 7/8, 194.6 kms
A long, tough key stage in changing weather invites long-range attacks. Several GC top 10 guys tried to put pressure on us by joining the break of the day. Othman (7th), Roe (8th), Jones (9th) and Fróis (12th) all tried something to gain some places before tomorrow's conclusive flat stage. Jones' move already came to an end on the first two cat. 3 climbs. King and van Beusichem had succeeded in following Fróis, Roe and Othman. Boswell used the next cat. 3-2-3 climbs to put quite a distance between him and the peloton. Only Sam would still be able to bridge, which he'd do halfway the cat.1 Telegraph Hill. With 77 km left, the breakaway was 3'38" ahead, while the beaten pack had already lost 3'30" to those two. The understanding between Sam and Boswell was just excellent, which resulted in them catching sight of the break on the cat. 2 Tip Top Peak. The peloton lost more and more ground to them, 6'47" at that moment. Othman was not giving up on the stage win yet and attacked before the top. King was dropped from the break as the three remaining guys saw Sam and Boswell closing in. The Malaysian gained 1'16" riding downhill. The two chasers finally caught Fróis, van Beusichem and Roe ahead of the brutal cat.1 Priest climb (3km, avg. 14.9%). On the steepest slopes a duo of Roe and Boswell attacked. Sam looked for his own, steady pace. Our leader dropped his own companions and kept Boswell within reach. Sam even dropped Roe and Boswell again and dug deep to reel in sole leader Othman. Both needed to catch their breath on Priest Coulterville Road, a nasty uncategorised bump just before the last climb of the day, Greeley Hill. Once more Boswell, Roe and van Beusichem bridged back. Sam'd take charge of things himself on Greeley Hill (5.3kms, avg. 7.7%). Fighting for another stage win, Roe and van Beusichem quickly cracked. All of a sudden there was no stopping Sam anymore. Two km from the top, Boswell and Othman could no longer keep our man's wheel either. Sam cut through the mist and concluded a brutal day in the saddle with a fully deserved stage win and a 2'12" gap to Othman and Boswell, who will probably also join him when climbing the overall podium tomorrow. No doubt we've had a great time in the US. Ion's time trial was worse than disappointing but he's showed very good form at times, let's get into that top 10 asap.

Amgen Tour of California (2.HC) ![i.imgur.com/OXwpbMJ.png](https://i.imgur.com/OXwpbMJ.png) Stage 8/8, 198.8 kms
Omar Fraile made the ultimate break of this race. His fellow escapees, who would already have troubles at the first climb, were Cerulli, Squire, Pelikan, Miletta and Polivoda. Jointly, they set sail towards Yosemite NP. Omar intented to thin the group at the next climbs, but only Miletta had been dropped when they started the Yosemite circuit. The maximal gap of eight minutes had been halved with 50km left to cover in this edition. Fróis (GC 6th) surprisingly cracked in the peloton. The remaining riders kept closing in on the break, 1'27" 25 kilometers from the finishing line. But the five made it. Omar started the sprint at the back and could only watch how Cerulli achieved his first pro win. Vandenborre safely came home in the pack and bagged both the overall win and the white jersey. Definitely a nice ride by Fraile to conclude this one. It's been half a year since our last GC win so it's really welcome. ![Smile](../images/smiley/smile.gif)
Fun fact:
Vandenborre has given us all of our three latest overall wins, triumphing in Austria 2018, Languedoc-Roussillon 2018 and now California 2019.

Too bad we won't be able to make him an offer before next year, as that's when his contract will be expiring.

Hey Ian, great to have you here following.
Sam's become a lot better since he joined the team, but we're not able to tell what he can do in a GT as yet.
Nowadays it's somewhat dangerous to even be an average Belgian climber, as the press often overhype them. That's why Vandenborre (who will turn 24 this year) chose to develop away from the heimat, with a team that always puts a focus on la Vuelta (his favorite GT). This year is going to be the first time he's leading in Spain.
In case you're interested in his palmares, you can always check the season recaps using the quicklinks in the first post.

Giro d'Italia (WT) ![i.imgur.com/zMBJxFz.png](https://i.imgur.com/zMBJxFz.png) Stage 9/21, 179.7 kms
Close to some Rest in Florence The last stage before the first rest day inspired 5 riders to attack: stage competitor Vuillermoz, Köhler, Naud, Lietaer and our Beñat Intxausti. Intxausti came third at the first mountain sprint behind Vuillermoz and Contreras; the latter had joined the break on his own, before the climb. Vuillermoz dropped the others on the - next - cat.1 Vallombrosa climb. Only Contreras remained close while the rest were already losing 1'25". Contreras bridged back in the descent and a bit later Beñat did as well. However the latter had to let go on the flat, approaching the cat.2 Vetta Le Croci. The duo's advantage over the pack had shrunk to less than 2'. After the climb, Vuillermoz was the only leader. The pace in the peloton had dropped as Betancur was now trying to close a 42" gap on his own. Both were caught before the last climb in Fiesole, just outside Florence. Landa attacked 1km from the top. Majka, of all people, tried to counter. Majka caught up but could not follow Landa in the descent. Between the barriers of the closing 2km the Basque had 20". A 3rd group with Frank, Van der Sande and Craddock sat a minute back, Izagirre sat in the E4. Landa won a second stage, a great way to begin making up the time he lost in the long time trial. Majka came home in second, 23" after Landa. Craddock, Van der Sande and Frank got reeled in by the next group, as 17 riders were placed in the same time. I. Izagirre once again finished with the best of the rest, 53" down. Maglia Rosa Sergey Chernetskiy did not, he lost 2'43", as his pink jersey went to teammate Davide Formolo. The next stage will be a true test indeed. It's been clear Izagirre is good but we don't expect him to keep up with guys like Landa, Majka or Quintana, an overall top 5 at the end in Bresica would be a huge achievement.
Let's rest up for one day first though!
