Petronas - Monster Energy; The end of an era
dienblad
@ all: Thanks for your comments and support. One day in my career, I'll win Milano - San Remo (although I won it twice in PCM '09 with Cunego and Bennati, so it's possible!).

Some news from the contract-front. We've renewed the contract from 4 more riders:
Jack Bobridge is developing himself as a great timetrialist, so we want to give him the opportunity to continue with his development.
img502.imageshack.us/img502/4972/bobridge.png

Tom Dumoulin is a young domestique, whom will never be a team leader. But we need domestiques and his flat and hilly skills are pretty decent.
img3.imageshack.us/img3/9641/dumoulin.png

Pim Ligthart is developing himself into a good sprinter, who can win a sprint on in hilly race. He's capable of winning a few races every year, so we are happy he renewed his contract!
img268.imageshack.us/img268/5646/ligthart.jpg

Joost Posthuma is one of the better domestiques, who can show up in all kinds of races (cobbles, GT, hilly). And with his TT-abilities, he an also ride a good TT/prologue and take part in a team time trial.
img443.imageshack.us/img443/820/posthuma.png

2 riders have refused to renew their contracts, so weve decided to let them go at the end of the year: Jens Keukeleire and Wout Poels. Keukeleire has become the 4th sprinter in the team and Poels is a great domestique in the mountains, but he is looking for a leading role in a smaller team.

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya celebrates it's 94th edition. We didn't participate last year, but are automatically invited as we are a World Tour team now. Mariano Canardo is the record winner with 7 victories, back in the 1920's and 1930's. Last year was won by Canadian Ryder Hesjedal.
img402.imageshack.us/img402/7189/22011g.jpgimg197.imageshack.us/img197/3865/3hesjedal.jpg

The route
7 stages, 3 of them flat, 3 hilly and one mountain stage. So again, no TT-kilometres.
The first stage with start and finish in Lloret de Mar contains some hills in the last part, so it won't be a mass sprint.
img825.imageshack.us/img825/8148/route1yu.jpg

The 2nd stage from Salt to Banyoles is for the sprinters.
img502.imageshack.us/img502/2365/route2.jpg

Stage 3 will be decisive for the GC, with the finish on top of the Vallnord / La Seu d'Urgell.
img585.imageshack.us/img585/2083/route3g.jpg

The 4th stage from Oliano to Ascó is for the sprinters again.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/7291/route4.jpg

Stage 5 from Ascó to Cabacés will probably the last chance to shake up the GC.
img707.imageshack.us/img707/8155/route5.jpg

As stage 6 from El Vendrell to Barcelona is hilly, but not difficult enough.
img526.imageshack.us/img526/9798/route6.jpg

The last stage to Montmélo is for the sprinters again.

Our team
img408.imageshack.us/img408/4546/ploeg.jpg

The favourites
*** Igor Antón (Euskaltel), Rigoberto Urán (Sky), Benat Intxausti (Movistar)
** Levi Leipheimer (Omega Pharma), Iván Basso (Garmin), Fabio Duarte (Nespresso)
* Richie Porte (Saxo Bank), Thomas Dekker, Chris Horner (Lotto)

Our goal
A stage win will be difficult, as this is the first race of the season for our sprinter Marcel Kittel. Thomas Dekker aims for a top 5 in the GC. But it's uncertain how he deals with the high mountains, as it's the first time he faces them since his ban.

Congratulations for the renewals, undoubtedly there are a wise move.

A pity the exits of Jens and Wout, two biggest riders that could contribute very much the team.

I´ve very wanted to see the following race to be seen which it is the behavior of the team Wink

A lot of luck!

Wink

Good luck for that, Dekker's form seems to be very good, should be better than most of his competitors.

@ cunego59: thanks for reading it Wink.Dekker's form is very good, but I can tell you that he will loose time in the first stage to the 2 main favourites.....

@ alexanderlens: wished signings, difficult to say, as we have already 2 capable GT-winners, some hilly classics-winners. I only lack a world class cobbler (no Cancellara. but Terpstra is really improving) and a world class sprinter (Sp > 80). But the problem is the budget, as the sponsor income is lower than the loan costs.... But when a great talented rider is out of contract in the end of the year, we consider all options Cool

The kick off of this year's Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is in Lloret de Mar, near the Costa Brava. The route goes into the countryside with some serious hills to be climb. The finish is back in Lloret de Mar.
img825.imageshack.us/img825/8148/route1yu.jpg

We go straight to the summit of today's first climb, the Alt de Sant Hilari (9.1km at 5.9%). Rodrigo Garcia (Nissan Radioshack) leads an 11-man breakaway over the summit. He's joined by Simone Masciarelli (Astana), Francesco Failli (Farnese), Mathieu Perget (AG2R), Luis León Sánchez (Rabobank), Roberto Ferrari (Androni), Imanol Erviti (Movitar), Stephen Cummings (Sky), Travis Meyer (Qantas), Arkaitz Duran (Nespresso) and Martin Kohler (BMC). Less than a minute behind follows Vasil Kiryienka (Astana), who hass attacked later out of the peloton and will close the gap in the descend. The peloton is almost 8 minutes behind!
img847.imageshack.us/img847/6938/2kotm1.jpg

The 2nd Intermediate sprint is located 57 kilometres before the finish. The BOTD still has a huge lead of 5'34.
img716.imageshack.us/img716/1046/3is2h.jpg

The 2nd categorized climb of the day is the Alt de San Grau (5.2km at 6.4%). Perget is the first to cross the line of the KOTM-sprint, followed by Meyer and Garcia. The peloton follows at 2'44, with 35km remaining.
img443.imageshack.us/img443/6048/4kotm2f.jpg

In the next 16 kilometres the gap has only decreased by 17 seconds. We've send our domestiques up front of the peloton to do the chase, but can't close the gap all by ourselves. Only Euskaltel is helping, but it took some diplomacy to persuade their DS.
img221.imageshack.us/img221/3194/519km.jpg

But disaster strikes 15km before the finish: our leader Thomas Dekker gets a puncture and is located at the back of the peloton when the last (non-categorized) climb of the day starts. At the foot of this climb, 7 kilometres before the finish, Rigoberto Urán (Sky) launches his attack. But he's still 1'39 behind the leading group.
img6.imageshack.us/img6/5813/67km.jpg

But Urán manages to close the gap in only 2 kilometres. His teammate Stephen Cummings is leading the first group with only 5 km remaining. In the back comes an orange jersey: Igor Antón makes the jump from the peloton to the leading group. Romain Zingle & Rob Ruijgh do what they can to bring Thomas Dekker back to the front.
img10.imageshack.us/img10/6575/75kmq.jpg

Up front, Antón has closed the gap to the leading group and tries to keep a gap to the peloton. He's leading the first group with 2 kilometres to go.
img94.imageshack.us/img94/13/82km.jpg

But it's Rigoberto Urán who takes the win in Lloret de Mar, beating Mathieu Perget and Stephen Cummings. Dekker crosses the line in the first peloton, 38 seconds behind Urán.

@ alexanderlens: because they have a more-year contract at the moment, I'll keep an eye on them (and all the Dutch and Belgium riders).

A pity that Dekker was so behind when Urán threw its attack. The distance has not been important and I hope that it could eliminate it in the next days.

Your leader has the big form state and surely that will be capable of improving positions in the next days. Do you have any stage in mind?

Good luck mate!

Unfortunately punctures and falls are all part of cycle racing, which shows how real pcm isSad

The 2nd stage from Salt to Banyoles should be for the sprinters. There are two climbs in the first half of the stage (Alt de la Ganga & the Alt dels Angels), but the 2nd half is flat.
img502.imageshack.us/img502/2365/route2.jpg

Rob Ruijgh is sprinting for the KOTM-points and takes them on the first climb. He's showing our new outfit (big thanks to tmobile), including our new subsponsor Subway (oh man, how I love their Chicken Fajita-sandwiches Grin).
img402.imageshack.us/img402/6731/1kotm1.jpg

Swiss Matthias Frank (BMC) has attacked during the 2nd climb of the day, so he makes it to the summit all by himself. Ruijgh gets 2nd place, followed by Haimar Zubeldia (Nissan) and the peloton, over a minute behind Frank.
img856.imageshack.us/img856/4319/2kotm2.jpg

The peloton takes it easy in the descend, so the lead of Frank increases. Crossing the line of the 2nd Intermediate sprint, with 50 kilometres remaining, it's 4'48.
img59.imageshack.us/img59/3839/3is2.jpg

Thomas Dekker crosses the line in 2nd place, regaining 2 seconds for the GC.
img195.imageshack.us/img195/1685/4peloton.jpg

Frank starts the last lap of the closed circuit near Banyoles and he gets accompanied by Garmin's David Zabriskie. Przemyslaw Niemiec (Vacansoleil) is on it's way. The peloton follows at '29.
img163.imageshack.us/img163/3825/510km.jpg

Also Bert Grabsch (Omega Pharma) has attacked out of the peloton and joined the 3 leaders. Frank can't follow their pace anymore, so with 5 km to go, Grabsch, Niemiec and Zabriskie are in the lead. The peloton is '28 behind, but will catch the 3 leaders with 2500 metres remaining.
img832.imageshack.us/img832/5328/65km.jpg

The sprint looks to be a dual between Robbie McEwen (Qantas) and Aitor Galdos (Caja Rural). But in between comes Denis Galimzyanov with an impressive jump. The best Russian sprinter at the moment takes the win, impressive ride! And what about our sprinters? Well, Marcel Kittel (you know, fitness of 79) was in the wheel of McEwen, but lost it with 10km to go. So we decided to set up our own train, but as soon as the sprint started, the entire team was falling behind. So Kittel finishes in 14th place.
img249.imageshack.us/img249/6512/7finish.jpg

In the middle of the peloton has occured a crash, just within th elast kilometre. BMC's Marco Pinotti was the first to hit the tarmac, and our Rob Ruijgh couldn't avoid him anymore. You see him flying through the sky here, but luckily he could continue without broken bones. Some more riders lost a few minutes because of the crash: Fabio Duarte, Ivan Basso, Paolo Tiralongo, Xavier Florencio and Thomas Löfkvist. One rider had to abandon: Joan Horrach (Katusha) broke his collarbone and is out for 2 months.

Word from the DS
At least we showed our faces (and new jersey) on tv today. Tomorrow is a big day, let's see how Dekker can climb.
