Driedaagse van West Vlaanderen

While I am with the team in Murcia, my #2 is managing the team for the Driedaagse van West Vlaanderen race. Since I am not attending the race, all I know are the results. We've done well in the past here. They key is to avoid wind driven splits and keep a strong time trialist close going into the 3rd day, which is a time trail.

We'll send our cobblestone team for this race minus Zhou Sui with Brian Vandborg (a past winner) in his place).

Past Winners

Thomas Dekker (Rabobank): Dekker left Rabobank after the 2007 season and joined Discovery Channel where he developed into a top rider, including winning the 2010 Tour de France. When Discovery could no longer afford him, he joined Lampre in 2012 only to return to Rabobank this season. Dekker won his second Tour de France last season in astonishing form with second place finishing more than 8 minutes behind. He went on to finish the season as the top ranked rider in the UCI Pro Tour and will be looking for more this season.

Robert Gesink (Astana): Second place at the Tour de France last season (distant second to Dekker). He's hungary for another crack.

If this were true in 2012 I would go completely nuts. Even more nuts than the Brits go about Cavendish.

Lol..Dekker winning the Tour 8 minutes ahead of Gesink..

Of course you fail to mention that you always argued in favor of giving Dekker and Gesink starting stats that result in ridiculous development like this...

Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia

Stage 3: Moratalla ITT
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0001-2.jpg

Popo sets the first strong time of the day at 20'14". i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0003-1.jpg

Hilbers matches Popo's time.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0004-1.jpg

Mazur sets a new best time at 20'08.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0005-1.jpg

Mazur's time doesn't hold long as Jason Donald hits the course. He is flying and will absolutely destroy Mazur. 19'34".
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM00052.jpg

Petrov comes in +1'06" for 16th.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0006-1.jpg

Lloret clocks +46, 9th place.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0007-1.jpg

Ciano, +58 (14th place).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0008-1.jpg

Gesink shows he is clearly not yet in top race condition at +1'20" (29th place).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0009-1.jpg

Kreuziger is similarly not in his best condition - +1'13" (24th place).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0010-1.jpg

Jamieson clocks a great time for 2nd place, but still +10.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0011-1.jpg

Kraaybeek, +42 (8th place).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0012.jpg

Kvasina, +38 (5th place).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0013.jpg

Ista, +46 (10th place).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0014.jpg

Last man with a chance to top Jason's time is Jakub Fielder. He won't though, +14 (3rd place).
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0015.jpg

With that performance, Jason has clearly esablished himself as the man to beat going into the mountain stage tomorrow. With any luck we could be two stages away from our first tour win of the season!

Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia

Stage 4: Cieza - Morron de Totana
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0001-3.jpg

Queen stage today and Jason need only counter any dangerous attacks attempted on the final climb.

A group of 6 goes on the attack. They reach a lead of 8'30" with 73 km to go before CSC and Lampre begin the chase. At the foot of the final climb, the break is down to 3 men with a 2'19" lead. We move Ardila, Popovych and Casanova forward to push the pace and wear out the pack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0003-2.jpg

Ardila does a particularly good job of stretching out the peloton before pulling over to the side and abandoning so he can make the drive to start in Paris-Nice. As that happens, Jason is briefly distracted so Kvasina launches an attack.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0005-2.jpg

No other attacks are attempted so as Jason recovers from the element of surprise, he counters and quickly bridges the gap to Kvasina.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0006-2.jpg

Jason need only sit on Kvasina's wheel to win and refuses to do any work on the remainder of the climb.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0007-2.jpg

As we near the finish line, Kvasina begins to tire so Jason takes the opportunity to move around him and grab the stage win!
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0008-2.jpg

Back in the chasing pack, Popo is still strong and manages to grab himself 3rd place rounding out a very good day for Discovery Channel.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0009-2.jpg

With that, barring something unforeseen tomorrow, we should have our first tour win of the season!

Driedaagse van West Vlanderen

Due to technical difficulties (the stage didn't work) stage 3 of this race had to be abandoned. Therefore, the final results are identical to the results as of the end of Stage 2.

Happens every now and then with PCM Spain. Next up, Stage 5 of the Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia and Stage 1 of Paris-Nice. Probably not until Tuesday night or Wednesday Asia time though.

Stage 5: Molina de Segura - Murcia
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0027.jpg

Flat stage with one hill in the middle. Today's job is make sure Jason finishes in yellow and then set up for a sprint finish.

A 9 man break goes. It hits an 8 minute lead with 100 km to go. Nobody else looks like chasing so we take over the peloton.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0028.jpg

As his teammates chase upfront, Jason enjoys the imminent win.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0029.jpg

The break is caught and it will be a sprint finish. Van Heerden drags Sui along and catches the backwheel of Rizza, who has proven to be a great lead out man throughout this Tour.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0030.jpg

As the sprint kicks in, Van Heerden pulls away from the less fit Sui. Dall'Antonia is looking strong. Morkov is battling with Van Heerden and Rojas (in green) is coming up fast.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0031.jpg

Dall'Antonia wins it while Morkov pulls away for 2nd. Van Heerden just manages to hold off Rojas to grab 3rd.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/murcia/PCM0032.jpg

So we get our first win of the season. Hopefully to be followed by a Paris-Nice win. Jason is looking strong for Tirreno-Adriatico so it will be an intresting couple of weeks.

Past Winners

2007: Riccardo Ricco (Saunier Duval)
2008: Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas)
2009: Thomas Dekker (Discovery Channel)
2010: Jose Ivan Gutierrez (AG2R)
2011: Alejandro Valverde (T-Mobile)
2012: Yuri Trofimov (Astana)

First pro tour race of the season and an important one for us as winning is a sponsor goal. Last season we did not accomplish a single one of our sponsor goals so it would be nice to start off this season by bagging one straight out.

This years course is relatively hilly with only one mountain stage and two time trials. It appears to favor puncheurs with decent time trial skills unless a team can make the single mountain stage hard on the opposition and spring a climber on attack to take the win.

Our main hope for the win is Andy Schleck and he will act as team leader. Ivan Rovny will be #2 and ready to fill in for Andy just in case. Rovny's explosiveness in the hills makes him a viable candidate to win. Mark Cavendish will be our sprinter and will have an opportunity to win several stages given the flatness of the tour. Tyler Farrar is here as well and will generally lead Mark out. Monfort and Gerdemann are here to help in the moutains. Ardila was meant to be here as well but apparently got held up on the way back from Murcia and missed the start. Fumiyuki Beppu fills in, although this weakens the team significantly as we will miss Ardila's climbing support. Markus Reich rounds out our team and will be gunning for 1-2 stage wins in the time trials.

Main Competition

There are a number of top cyclists here, however many are just starting their seasons and therefore cannot be considered serious threats. Those who are amongst the favorites include:

Yuri Trofimov (Astana)
Not someone you would generally consider a threat at Paris-Nice, however last year he surprised all by riding away with the win. He has decent hill skills and time trial skills and will be gunning to defend his title.

Edvald Boasson Hagen (Rabobank)
Has the skills on the hills, in the mountains, time trialing and sprinting to win this. Furthermore, he is in the midst of his season and should be in good fitness. He has to be considered a real threat to win.

Tony Martin (Predictor Lotto)
Tony showed his capabilities at the Tour of California. If he can hang close in the hills, he has the ability to win it in the long time trial and on the mountain. Has a strong team around him that includes Alexander Gottfried (another potential winner) and Cadel Evans.

Marcel Wyss (Liquigas)
Wyss won in the youth rankings at Paris-Nice last season. He is explosive in the hills. The only potential knock on Wyss is his time trial ability. He may not be strong enough to hold off the likes of Schleck and Martin.

Ruben Plaza (Lampre
Ruben brings the total package for this race: climbing, explosiveness in the hills and time trial ability. If he is in good fitness, he'll be amongst the top contenders.

Alexander Gottfried
Similar to Wyss, the question mark around Gottfried is how much time he'll lose in the long time trial. It may be enough that is outstanding skills as a puncheur will be for naught.

Bernhard Kohl (Saunier Duval)
Has already shown his form and skills this season. He'll need to push the pace in the moutains, however, if he is to win this race.

Remy Di Gregario (Ag2R)
Very strong on both mountains and hills. In top form but time trial skills might just be too weak.

Jonas Aaen Jorgensen (Liquigas), Giorgio Brambilla (QuickStep), Diego Milan (Caisse)
These guys are all in good form but share one thing in common: their poor time trial skills may outweigh their ability to create separation in the hills.

Stage 1: Fontainebleau ITT
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0001.jpg

Time trial today in terrible weather. Many of the riders don't seem up to this and outcome will be interesting.

Markus Reich is first Discovery Channel man on the course and is one of the few who does look eager. It shows in his time, a strong 9'07". This may be tough to beat.

With that, Markus Reich starts this tour off well for us by winning the opening stage. Hope this bodes well.

Stage 2: Auxerre - Le Creusot
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0027.jpg

An early break of 11 includes very strong riders: Numba Ting (and American who we covet) and Julian Rodas. The peloton can't let these guys get away, and actively chase.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0028.jpg

A series of subsquent attacks but a lot of stress on the peloton, but eventually things calm down and a break of 4 goes. With 60km to go, Gottfried launches an attack. Not clear why, although perhaps he is trying to force the peloton to chase harder, wear them out and prepare the stage for an attack by his teammate, Tony Martin.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0029.jpg

Gottfried is chased down and caught by, oddly enough, his own team. Perhaps it was an unauthorized attack?
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0030.jpg

Up the final hill, there is a very strong attack by Marcel Wyss.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0031.jpg

Gomez Marchante and Kruopis follow, but are unable to bridge the gap to Wyss.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0032.jpg

Schleck and many others try to counter but are caught by the peloton. With the peloton losing ground to the three in front of them, we push all of our guys forward to lead the chase. In the downhill, the peloton splits with a group of 29 getting away including: Schleck, Rovny and Reich.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0033.jpg

While the Schleck group closes in on Gomez Marchante and Kruopis, Wyss enjoys an impressive solo victory. No picture of 2nd and 3rd, however Gomez Marchante and Kruopis held on, just barely, but it was close enough that the Schleck group finished on the same time.
i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu49/BangkokYank/Paris-Nice/PCM0034.jpg

Tough to lose a large chunk of time on Wyss as he is, obviously, very dangerous. Hopefully we can make it up on the long time trial and the one mountain stage.
