Stage 7 Profile

www.paris-nice.fr/PHOTOS/PNC/2007/700/PROFIL.gif

The last day of Paris-Nice 2007 is finally here. I say finally because all we want to do now is to bring home that yellow jersey and get two guys on the podium this afternoon. Today is one of the toughest stages of the race and we knew that there would be a lot of guys attacking Fränk on the traditional 1st category climb Col d’Eze today. Fränk had his work cut out, he didn’t have to prove anything as he has already done that by winning the hardest stage of this tour. All he had to do was to answer to any attacks from GC riders that might threaten his position. Of course that’s easier said than done, but we knew that Fränk was in an amazing shape and that he was very capable of finishing this.

Not only the yellow jersey was up for grabs today. Especially the battle for the green jersey was gonna be interesting today. It was going to be between the three riders already in the top 3 of the competition, Oscar Freire, who is leading with 83 points, Tom Boonen second with 73 and Stefan Schumacher third with 72. Actually Schumacher looked as the biggest menace for Freire, as he was more capable of climbing the Col d’Eze and therefor he would be in a better position to grab some points on the line.

But off it went. The stage took off in Nice, where it would also end later and there was just packed with spectators along the beach road as the peloton passed the luxury hotel Negresco, where we by the way were staying tonight.

img45.imageshack.us/img45/6563/boonenvsfreiregy5.jpg
As a consolation for losing the green jersey, Boonen was wearing the white ProTour jersey as a result of leading the individual standings

img266.imageshack.us/img266/9291/cscwv6.jpg
We didn’t work a whole lot as things wouldn’t get interesting until the Col d’Eze

Only two riders got away from the pack today, with one of them being pretty interesting for the king of the mountains competition. It was Ronny Scholz who already on two seperate occasions had won the polka dotted jersey in this tour. The other was Unibet.com’s Matteo Carrara. None of them posed a big threat for the GC, as Scholz was 6’55” behind Schleck and Carrara was 8’18” of the pace of our luxembourgian phenomenon.

The first intermediate sprint today was taken by the two breakaway riders with Freire taking third to move one step closer to the green jersey.

img338.imageshack.us/img338/238/udbrudpn2cb7.jpg
Scholz couldn’t keep up with Matteo Carrara up the 1st category climb of Col de la Porte

The two riders were seperated on the first real difficulty of the day, the 1st category climb Col de la Porte, with its 7,2 km and a gradient of 7,2 %. It didn’t mean much for Scholz, as Carrara didn’t have a single point in the king of the mountains competition, meaning that Scholz were heading safely towards winning the 2nd most prestigous polka dotted jersey in the world of cycling, of course there are only two, but who’s counting.

With 70 km to go, Rabobank was through with this boring pace as they cranked it up a notch or three, meaning that Carrara would have no chance of taking a brilliant solo win today. On the last but one climb of the tour, the La Turbie, Scholz was reeled in, well knowing that he was winning the polka dotted jersey. At this point Carrara had 3’45” on the pack, but it was coming down. He did manage to climb the La Turbie before the pack, actually he was still leading with 3 minutes on the top. But he lost a huge amount of time on the descent and with 30 km to go, his gap was down to 1’30”.

Right before the penultimate climb of the Paris-Nice, there was another bonus sprint, which Carrara of course claimed, with Freire taking second and further 2 points. The situation in the points competition was now, that if Freire didn’t get over the last mountain in a good enough position to score points on the line, then Schumacher could claim the green jersey with just finishing 6th on the line.

With 25 km to go it was all over for Carrara, as the peloton hit the final climb, the Col d’Eze, that was going to decide the winner of Paris-Nice 2007. We’d been talking a lot with Fränk and Jens throughout the day and luckily Fränk was feeling really strong today, while Voigt told us that he didn’t have the legs he was hoping for. After a few kilometres with Rabobank setting the pace for Dekker, Luis León Sánchez (12th 1’48”) attacked with Fränk right on his tail. Also Valjavec (9th 1’11”) and Gadret (8th 1’02”) caught up with them. Voigt almost made contact with him, but he was lacking the final punch today as he had to settle for a place among the chasers in a 7-man group containing, him (2nd 15”), Kashechkin (11th 1’46”), Kirchen (10th 1’15”), Dekker (4th 17”), Cobo (3rd 16”), Chavanel (5th 28”) and Schumacher (15th 2’09). Laurens Ten Dam and Manuel Garate was the only riders in the top ten who didn’t make the final cut today.

As the front group crossed the top with 15 km to go, they had a lead of 45” to the chasing group, while the chasing group had 45” on the pack. This meant that John Gadret and Luis León Sánchez were in for a shot of making the podium on the expense of Voigt and Cobo, who were in the chasing group. Voigt’s hands were tied however as he had his captain Fränk in the leading group and could therefor take part in reeling the leaders in.

img119.imageshack.us/img119/8224/snchezangribernu4.jpg
Sánchez wanted a podium spot so he raced away from Cobo and Voigt on the last climb, setting himself up perfectly to do it

With 5 km to go, it was clear that the Schleck-group was going to make it. They had a lead of 40” to the chasers, who had 1’10” on the pack, where Oscar Freire still was. Schleck isn’t a fast finisher but neither were the other riders in the group, so Fränk decided to take Gadret’s wheel as they came into the home stretch in Nice. Sánchez and Gadret were still setting a high pace to gain as much time as possible on Cobo and Voigt, but they had to start their sprints sooner or later. And they did. Sánchez was the first to take off, but Gadret was clearly stronger than the spaniard, so with Schleck on his wheel he raced towards the finishing line hoping for a victory. But Fränk was incredibly strong today and as the finishing line was getting really close, he bursted away to ride side-by-side with Gadret for a fraction of a second, until...

img167.imageshack.us/img167/172/frankieyz4.jpg
Is Fränk Schleck winning a sprint?

...He bursted right past him in his yellow jersey, to win the final stage of the Paris-Nice. What a dream ending for Fränk, he kept telling us how good he was feeling today, but as the finale was flat today we honestly never expected him to win. A picture says more than a thousands words, so...

img131.imageshack.us/img131/2935/frankvindersi4.jpg

Gadret came in second in the same time as Schleck with Sánchez and Valjavec right behind him. The final two podium spots was going to be decided by a matter of seconds and Gadret and Sánchez looked pretty edgy looking a digital clock hanging on finishing line banner. Gadret earned 4 bonus seconds on the line, so in order for him to make the podium he need the Voigt-Cobo group to finish 43 seconds after him in order to take 2nd place or 42 seconds to take 3rd place. Sánchez’ podium chances were gone as he need the group to finish 1’31” after him. 46 seconds later Schumacher crossed the line to take home 5th place, meaning two things: Gadret would climb to second in the GC, with Voigt finishing 3rd 1 second better than Cobo and if Freire didn’t score points, then Schumacher would win the green jersey. This didn’t happen however as Freire won the sprint of the pack, 1’49 behind today’s winner Fränk Schleck. Today’s biggest losers must be Julien Mazet who lost the polka dotted jersey to Scholz and Laurens Ten Dam who just missed out on a top ten spot as he couldn’t follow the favourites on the Col d’Eze.

A fantastic Paris-Nice for us has come to an end and with Fränk two stage victories and a third place, there’ll be no one standing in way of him claiming the ProTour jersey and keeping it when Tirreno-Adriatico is over.

Post-Race Interview with Fränk Schleck

Interviewer: So Fränk congratulations on not only the stage victory but also on winning Paris-Nice by a considerable margin. How do you feel right now?

FS: Well...above all tired, this has been a hard eight days work, not only for me but for the rest of the team and let me just take this opportunity to thank my teammates for the fantastic job they’ve done for in this race, I really don’t know what to say, you know, this is like a dream come true to me. I was ready to sacrifice myself for Jens before this race, but I got a glimpse of hope already on the prologue, where I did the best time trial of my career and quite frankly I’m very surprised with myself and my form.

Interviewer: So it this a childhood dream come true for you?

FS: Most definitely. As I said when I won stage 4, this is a very big and prestigous race and a lot of riders want to win it, so for me this victory is as big if not bigger than my victory on the Alp d’Huez.

Interview: Eight days of hard work has come to an end, what’s on the agenda now for Fränk Schleck.

FS: We’ve got Milan-San Remo coming up, which is another race that I really like and I hope I can make a good result there too, after that I’ll ride the Vuelta al pais Vasco as warm-up race for the Ardennes Classics, where I hope that I can win at least one of those three races.

Interviewer: Thank you Fränk and Good Luck!

It was a great evening at Negresco as we celebrated Fränk’s victory and Voigt’s podium place. I’m really impressed with this team, eventhough Rabobank was also very strong, we really had no match and that shines through when you look at the final podium. Also Dave did a good job as he finished the race in 20th place, but the last words must go to Fränk after winning two amazing stages and winning Paris-Nice 2007.

Fränk Schleck has ridden the best race of his life as he has won the 64th edition of the Paris-Nice: “The Race to the Sun”.

Yeah congrats! Cancelara has won all TTs hes entered in my career file, but he is a CPU controlled rider so hes allowed to be superhuman. Poor Rosseler doesn't stand a chance!

The last stage that should have any impact on the GC of this tour. Tomorrow’s stage is flat and will most likely end up in a mass sprint or with a breakaway group fighting it out. Today’s leader Peter van Petegem will most likely lose his yellow jersey today as he’s not exactly a climber, but I’m sure he’s been enjoying riding in it. I was on my way home from France today meaning I couldn’t watch the stage, all I could do was to hope that Kroon would ride a good stage to stay in the top of the GC

So Bettini looks set for winning Tirreno-Adriatico and for challenging Fränk Schleck in the fight for the ProTour jersey.

Ricardo Riccó took stage 6 of the Tirreno-Adriatico, but it was only enough for a 7th place in the GC, as he couldn’t help Bettini reclaiming the maglia giallo-rossa

The last stage of this second ProTour race of the season. Bettini looks like the winner, eventhough he doesn’t have more than 4 seconds on Rinaldo Nocentini. It turned out to be a fantastic stage for us as a 3-man break came through, in which we had Karsten Kroon, who finished 2nd on the stage, 23 seconds before the peloton, meaning that he would move to 3rd in the GC, so a quite crazy stage, but what a stunt he pulled here Kroon.

Time for the first ProTour Classic of the season, Milan-San Remo or “The Spring Classic”. And this one is really a classic in the true meaning of the word. This 2007-edition of the race is 98th Milan-San Remo, since Lucien Petit-Breton won the first in 1902. The defending champion, Fillipo Pozzato is of course on the startlist for today and he’s one of the biggest favourites today as he fits the profile perfectly. We’ve brought a very strong team, where all of our participating riders has just come out of Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico, which means they’re in great condition. Stuey will be our instant captain, but we’ll have to see how the race lets itself go before we’re completely aware of who we’ll be fully commited to helping. The many hills on the last 50 km could favorise Fränk as he’s come out of Paris-Nice in almost peak condition together with Jens Voigt.

img409.imageshack.us/img409/2381/schleckvsbettinici8.jpg
Fränk riding through Milan in his ProTour jersey after winning Paris-Nice less than a week ago. That jersey will challenged today by home favorite Paolo Bettini

What a race this turned out to be. It was crazy right from the outset and riders were just attacking all the time. A lot of big group tried to on turn get away from the pack. We knew we had to be in the thick of things today, so we sent off Nicki Sørensen, but this group of about 10-15 riders were quickly reeled in again. The another attacking party started in which we participated with Kurt-Asle, but after a long fight, this group was also reeled in. But it seemed as though every single rider in the peloton wanted to win today, which resulted in a massive attack from a huge number of riders, which resulted in the escape of a gigantic 29-man group, that the pack let go.

img515.imageshack.us/img515/3624/udbrudfeltturchinitg7.jpg
A 29-man group with a lot of hot shot riders got away, and it would seem uncatchable

Even more interesting, this group consisted of a lot of very big names. Here are the names of the 29 riders: Nuyens (COF), Riccó (SDV), Nocentini (A2R), McCartney (DSC), Kolobnev (CSC), Millar (SDV), Auger (FDJ), Cummings (DSC), Sánches G. (EUS), Pozzovivo (PAN), Gilbert (FDJ), Bäckstedt (LIQ), Sentjens (PRL), Astarloa (MRM), Gusev (DSC), Duque (COF), Garcia Acosta (GCE), Kessler (AST), Marzoli (TCS), Scheunemann (UNI), Víla (LAM), Iglinsky (AST), Niermann (RAB), Merckx (TMO), Burghardt (TMO), Florencio (BTL), Petito (LIQ), Ivanov (AST) and Wegmann (GST).

I have never witnessed anything like this, but of course the pack let them go as almost every team was represented, meaning that no teams had any intentions of chasing their own riders. Quickstep were not represented and you gotta wonder why they let this group go. At the foot of the first difficulty of the day, the Passo di Turchino the leading group had 3’30” on the peloton. But at this point the peloton came to a halt resulting in a 7’15” advantage for the 29 riders in front as they reached the top of Turchino.

img517.imageshack.us/img517/2237/ligrivsj3.jpg
As the breakaway group approached the ligurian riviera, their advantage over the pack had grown very big – can they make it?

But as the pack hit the road following the Mediterranean, Quickstep began setting their riders to relay in order to have a go at reeling in the breakaway. At this point there were 100 km to go and gap was about 9’00” so nothing was decided yet. Meanwhile Fränk told us that he was having a field day and that he wanted to try something on La Cipressa. So as Kolobnev was beginning to hurt out front we decided to let Fábian, Nicki, Karsten, Kurt-Asle and Jens Voigt to race to front of the pack in order to gain some more time on breakaway riders. And my word, did these five guys work hard. With 75 to go, the deficit had decreased to only 6’30” and with 60 to go, it had further decreased to 5’40”. At this point there were 18 riders left in group with the most interesting being Nick Nuyens, Philippe Gilbert, Marcus Burghardt, Axel Merckx, David Millar, Sergei Ivanov, Magnus Bäckstedt, Ricardo Riccó, Matthias Kessler, Rinaldo Nocentini, Fabian Wegmann, Vladimir Gusev, Sámuel Sánchez G. And Xavier Florencio.

img126.imageshack.us/img126/8202/cscfremyt5.jpg
While the breakaway group was falling apart we controlled the race from the peloton, by doing some powerful relays

On the first two capis, the Capo Mele and Capo Cervo nothing happened. But as the riders hit the Capo Berta, things started getting very interesting. At this point we had worked the pack’s deficit down to only 4’30” with about 50 km to go. But even Fábian was getting very tired, so we didn’t have much strenght left for the chase, which meant that Fränk Schleck attack on the Capo Berta and rode away from the peloton. Björn Leukemans and Fillipo Pozzato also attacked but they couldn’t keep the pace of Fränk, so they formed a duo to chase down the leaders. As the leading group crossed the summit of the Capo Berta, there were 12 riders left: Gusev, Merckx, Petito, Sánchez, Florencio, Kessler, Gilbert, Nuyens, Riccó, Nocentini, Ivanov and Wegmann.

img413.imageshack.us/img413/4344/schleckangriberxi7.jpg
Schleck took things in his own hands as he bravely attacked on the Capo Berta, with 50 km to go of the race

As I said, Fränk was really having a field day, and he was gaining time on the leaders constantly. With 40 km to go, the leading group had 2’30” on Schleck and 4’30” on the pack. Where only Quickstep were chasing with a few riders. At the foot of the La Cipressa, Fränk was 2’00” behind and he knew he had to almost fly over this hill to catch them. And guess what Mr. Fränk Schleck did. He was litterally owning La Cipressa and he phenonemonaly gained the last two remaning minutes on the leader and caught them right at the top of the very steep climb. Gusev, Florencio and Wegmann was dropped from the group on La Cipressa, meaning it had shrinked to a 10-man group with Fränk Schleck being the strongest among them.

img250.imageshack.us/img250/6862/schleckfremmemz3.jpg
Fränk was tearing up La Cipressa as he was trying to catch the leading group

Between La Cipressa and the Poggio the leading group passed the 20-km mark, with 3’20” on the pack, so it looked as they were gonna make it. As all of Fränk’s breakaway companions had been out there all day, he had no problem following them, but eventhough he showed that he could win a sprint in a breakaway group in Paris-Nice, we didn’t think he could outsprint guys like Riccó, Gilbert and Sánchez, so we told him to dig deep and launch an attack on the Poggio climb.

img128.imageshack.us/img128/160/schleckppoggioem1.jpg
Fränk Schleck launched an attack on the Poggio that no one could follow

Fränk got a gap immediately and no one could follow. Not even Leukemans or Pozzato who had joined the group early on the Poggio climb. At the top of the Poggio there were 14 km to, and Fränk had already built up a lead of 40 seconds. He was definitely going to make as he was just indesribeable strong. He was really aggresive on the final descent and he really used the full potential of the turns. He was heading towards a new fantastic ProTour victory, as he had built his lead to 42” with 10 km to go.

img408.imageshack.us/img408/7055/schleckstyrtda7.jpg
Disaster struck......

But he overdid his aggresiveness on the descent and in the final turn with 9 km to go he crashed. He came too fast through the corner and lost control of his bike and lost his chance of winning the race. As he was lying on the ground for about 2 minutes, meaning that the leading group now containing Petito, Pozzato, Leukemans, Sánchez, Nuyens and Kessler, rode past him and were going to fight it out for victory. What a blow for Fränk, an opportunity of a lifetime wasted in the last corner of the descent. Amazingly Fränk picked himself off and rode on in a fight for a top ten place and additional ProTour points so that he would defend his ProTour jersey.

With 5 km to go it was going to be a fight between defending champion Fillipo Pozzato, Sámuel Sánchez and Björn Leukemans. They had 1’10” to Fränk and 2’22” to the pack, meaning that Fränk still had a good chance of finishing in the top 10.

img502.imageshack.us/img502/6235/pozzatofremmeeq5.jpg
Pozzato rode hard on the last few kilometres in an attempt to upset his breakaway companions, while the peloton was chasing

As the leaders hit the Via Roma, there were really no doubt about the outcome. Sánchez was tired from being in a breakaway all day and Leukemans simply couldn’t follow the acceleration of Pozzato as he took off on the home stretch, steering home his second succesive victory in Milan-San Remo. Fränk just held off the pack, finishing in 6th, but despite defending his ProTour lead he was very dissapointed when I met him at the team bus.

If not aware of the events of this race, then we should be very pleased with the outcome, but knowing that Fränk was in a fantastic position of winning, we’re very dissapointed, as Fränk unfortuneately had to see the opportunity of a lifetime go begging.

Post-Race Interview with Fränk Schleck

Interviewer: Close but no cigar out there today Fränk, how do you feel right now?

FS: Dissapointed obviously. I was in a position that I might never be in again, I mean the way this race shaped, might not happen again in my cycling career, so I’m really upset right now with myself, as I really blew this chance for myself. I feel sorry for my teammates, who again worked amazingly for me, especially after the Passo di Turchino. They set me up perfectly and they were the sole reason that I came so close to winning this race.

A small hilly one-day race. As I was heading for Flanders to prepare for the next two cobble races, Dwars door Vlaanderen and E3 Prijs Vlaanderen, I wasn’t on sports director duty for this race. Because of Flanders trip I was also going to miss out on Vuelta a Castilla y León, Critérium International and Brabantse Pijl. Not that I was unhappy, because I gotta admit that I really love the cobble season, so it was pretty big for me to be part of the preparation for Ronde van Vlaanderen, Gent-Wevelgem and above all Paris-Roubaix. I got some bad news from our team doctor today about Matti Breschel’s injury in Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. Apparently he had been more severely injured than what the doctors first thought, so he’s going to be out of competition until the end of april, meaning that he’ll once again miss out on his favourite part of the season.

The 22nd edition of this minor spanish stage race. We’ve brought young starlet Andy Schleck as captain for this race, but as he’s just building his form for Giro d’Italia in may, we don’t expect that much of him, eventhough he could already have the capacity of finishing in the top ten. I’m still in Flanders, so I can’t follow this race live. Dwars door Vlaanderen scheduled for march 28th, so here are the results from the first two stages of this race.

I was making some times to read your story..great stuff..and what a team. On my Predictor story..I have CSC known as biggest trouble maker..so hard to beat them.
Most of all keep it coming..so much fun still a head A.Schleck and Giro ..TdF.

niconico
Yeah I'm also looking forward to cover the Giro Smile

But there'll be a lot of goals after the Tour de France aswell. I can already tell you now that Andy Schleck will also be looking to peak in Tour of Poland and then sustain his form throughout the season to do well in Züri Metzgete and Tour of Lombardy.

March 28th: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/65/Flag_of_Belgium.svg/20px-Flag_of_Belgium.svg.png Dwars door Vlaanderen – 200 km

Team: Fábian Cancellara, Stuart O’Grady, Lars Michaelsen, Karsten Kroon, Martin Pedersen, Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Anders Lund and Luke Roberts.

Today we are gonna resume my favourite part of the season, the cobble season. Our captain Fábian Cancellara has come out of Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo in great shape and as he’s already pulled off some decent results in Omloop Het Volk and KBK, we’re confident that he’ll be up there with the best today.

It wasn’t a very eventful race however, as no one tried to get away early on, meaning that the pack, controlled by Predictor – Lotto, Quickstep and Francaise des Jeux could just stroll through the Flandrian countryside. Somewhat kilometres past the halfway mark, the toughest part of the race came, with two páved climbs right after each other, but after that there would still be about 60 km to go.

img411.imageshack.us/img411/3909/feltddviz2.jpg
No one tried to bust open the race on the two páved climbs, which were located about 60 km from the finishing line.

But there were still 3 páved sections left, spread over the last 50 km or so. Nothing happened on the first, but just before the second, with 30 km to go, the peloton split up, as a result of a high pace by Quickstep and Predictor – Lotto, who had their respective captains Tom Boonen and Leif Hoste to worry about. The pack were now down to 26 riders, who would fight it out.

With 20 km to go, the attacks came. The first who tried was Marcus Burghardt (TMO), Nick Nuyens (COF) and Juan Antonio Flecha (RAB). A few kilometres later, we told Stuey and Fábian to counter and they got away from the pack together with Leif Hoste. Flecha and Nuyens were then dropped by Burghardt. Flecha recovered and were able to follow Stuey and Fábian’s group, but Nuyens hit the wall and dropped to the group with Quickstep and Boonen.

img515.imageshack.us/img515/714/angrebbg2.jpg
German cobble hope Marcus Burghardt was very strong today.

Burghardt was really strong today and he kept increasing his advantage, which grew to 45” with 10 km to go. If you can hold off Fábian, Stuey, Flecha and Hoste by yourself then you really have a field day, and I guess that was the case for Burghardt today, because he wasn’t to be caught and his lead was never really endangered by the chasers, eventhough Stuey and Fábian were riding really strong.

Stuey and Fábian’s group were caught by the 8 riders chasing on the home stretch, but Stuey managed to hold off Leif Hoste and Tom Boonen in the sprint to claim 2nd place. A pretty good result for him considering, how he did in Het Volk and KBK. Fábian finished 5th today, so he also looks set for his april objectives and also Three Days at Panne.

img405.imageshack.us/img405/6047/burghardtvindernk8.jpg
Marcus Burghardt proved his potential to all of the Paris-Roubaix favourites today. What a statement by the german.

Team: Bobby Julich, Lars Michaelsen, Lars Ytting Bak, Luke Roberts, David Zabriskie, Christian Vandevelde, Chris Anker Sørensen and Kasper Klostergaard.

A quite important this for us, as we’ve managed to win it the last three times it has taken place. Voigt won in 2004, Julich in 2005 and our former rider Ivan Basso won in 2006. Right now our best bid must be Julich or maybe Zabriskie, because of their capabilities in time trials. Lars Michaelsen has left Flanders for a while to compete in this race, as he needs some race days to get up and running completely. First stage was a flat stage, meaning that we wouldn’t have much to do it was to end in a mass sprint. Our race begins tomorrow and the day after.
