First mountain stage of the Tour and plenty of KoM points on the route. Robert Gesink was in the breakaway and ready to hunt them, but only got to gain points on the first three climbs of the day as the pack kept the breakaway on a very tight leash
The reason the pack rode very hard today was due to a crash on the first downhill. Involved? They yellow jersey and the green jersey as well as Tom Dumoulin and Dylan Groenewegen. The only one will manage to make it back will be Alaphilippe. Dumoulin would end up losing 10 minutes. Hard to say if he is injured or is just out of shape.
Gesink wasn't able to help Kruijswijk too much after getting caught as he was involved in a crash. The Jumbo GC leader was first at the summit of the penultimate climb of the day to protect Gesink's polka dots as at that point it was more or less clear than Gesink will be on the podium at the end of the stage
Plenty of attacks in the favorites group once we reached the final climb. The most articulate one was made by Romain Bardet and the French man went into a solo race with 6 kilometers to go
Behind him a chasing group was formed. Froome, Pinot and Pogacar were there. Dan Martin and Simon Yates were also there initially but could not keep up the pace
2.5 km to go, Froome accelerated to try to make it back to Bardet and the only one able to follow him was Thibaut Pinot, but with Bardet still going very strong it won't be easy for the Ineos rider to catch him
Pinot might have made a mistake trying to follow Froome's move as he cracked with one kilometer to go and was caught by Kruijswijk, who had just dropped Pogacar. In front of them, Froome was still fighting hard to get to Bardet but so was the Frenchman
And Bardet stays away to take a solo win on Planche des Belle Filles. With Alaphilippe 3 minutes down the road, Bardet will be taking on the yellow jersey as well. Big gaps today and he already have a interesting GC shaping up

After the first mountain stage, we are back in the Tour with a mass sprint finish. Jumbo and Sunweb are battling for supremacy at the front of the pack. Jumbo have enjoyed some success already but Sunweb are hungry to get this one for Matthews since it's all they have left with Tom Dumoulin out of the GC fight already
With 1 kilometer to go, Groenewegen, Ewan and Matthews are at the front. Groenewegen still has Teunissen with him though and that could prove to be crucial
Matthews and especially Ewan are really strong in the final kilometer but after jumping from Teunissen's wheel, Groenewegen seems to be on a completely different level
And it's a second stage win for Groenewegen and with this he takes back the green jersey as well. Degenkolb took third from Matthews on the finish line but it was not enough to keep green

Robert Gesink was in the breakaway today but after snatching a few KoM points and the breakaway not looking sure to make it to the finish, he dropped back to the pack to help Kruijswijk as the Dutchman could have been isolated with Bennett not having a great day
It was a mistake though as the breakaway would make it to the finish today. And on the last uphill section, Lutsenko put in a very strong attack which could be enough for him to take the stage win today
But with 3 CCC and 2 EF riders behind him the chase was pretty strong and he was caught inside the final kilometer, with Bettiol and the others sprinting past him
Bettiol was the strongest sprinter in the breakaway and he takes quite a comfortable win. He will have to thank Alex Howes for this one as the American took some big turns in the chase behind Lutsenko
Behind, in the pack Yates attacked and managed to get away with a few seconds, 11 to be more precise. A few GC riders lost time to the yellow jersey group today: Aru, Quintana and Formolo

Bad news for Jumbo at the start of the stage as Wout Van Aert did not sign in at the start. He's been dealing with back pain ever since the team time - trial and we had hoped he could make it to the rest day and see if he can recover but the pain only got worst and he is now forced to abandon from his first ever Tour de France.
The drama would continue throughout the day as a big crash in the pack would take out of the race quite a few riders. Vincenzo Nibali and Bauke Mollema were the biggest names to call it quits as a result of the incident
With a first category climb on the route, Gesink couldn't miss from the breakaway. He was second there and first on the fourth category climb, which means 10 more points to his tally
This time Gesink did not drop back to the back and it was the good decision as today was another day for the breakaway. Robert tried the same move as Lutsenko did today by attacking on the small uphill section after the last categorized climb of the day
The Dutchman got away and he looked like he had a good shot to take the stage today, but he was caught right before the finish line in an even more dramatic fashion that Lutsenko was yesterday. The chasing group behind was once again led by Bettiol!
But the Italian will not make it two in a row even though he looked in a very good position to do so! It's Arthur Vichot who crosses the line first and brings France their third win this week

We are back in the Tour after the rest day with 2 flat stages. And with another opportunity for the sprinters, Jumbo were at the front of the pack in the last kilometers of the stage
As the final kilometer is approaching Teunissen is leading the pack with Dylan Groenewegen in his wheel. We've seen this before. Could this be win #3 for the Dutchman?
It very certainly looks like this. Groenewegen's speed in the last kilometer is very impressive and the others are struggling to challenge it, with Laporte and Ewan being the closest to his speed
And it's a hat-trick for the Jumbo rider as he denies Laporte what would have been an iconic stage win in the French national colors

Good to see the sucess of your team, thought it would be optimstic to target the KoM and sprint jersey, but you're coping well

I feel that Gesink isn't making the most in the breakaways so if a real climber decides to go for the polka dots, I will be in real trouble.

Perhaps the last opportunity for sprinters before Paris and Jumbo were at the front of the pack inside the last kilometer of the stage to make the most of it, with only Degenkolb and Lawless strong enough to keep up with them
It was a fantastic lead out by Jansen and then by Teunissen, but Groenewegen seemed to be making once again the mistake of relaying too much on his lead out before making his own move and totally missed a very strong move on the other side of the road by Ewan and Bonifazio
Ewan is flying while Groenewegen is yet to make his move. Overly confident about his speed or miss step by the green jersey?
Groenewegen was indeed very fast in the last meters but it was enough only for third place. Ewan took the win and reduced Groenewegen's lead in the points classification by quite a bit and is now 8 points behind the Dutchman

[img-l]https://i.imgur.com/OFh7zwr.png[/img-l] | Tour de France: Stage 12 | [img-r]https://i.imgur.com/OFh7zwr.png[/img-r] |

With Ewan making up serious ground in yesterday's stage over Groenewegen, the former Dutch champion felt that he needed some more to his tally in order to have less pressure on his shoulders in the last stage if he will be able to survive the mountains. So today, we had no one distinctive jersey in the breakaway, but two. Both would add some important points to their tally.
It wasn't the most exciting stage of the Tour with no moves between the big favorites on any of the two first category climbs, while in the breakaway the strongest five climbers managed to stay clear of the pack to settle the stage win between themselves: Gesink, Zakarin, Dennis, Porte and Feillu
Not being the fastest rider in the group, Gesink tried to surprise the others with one kilometer to go, but every one was fast to react to the polka dots jersey wearer's move
The fastest from the group of five escapees proved to be Ilnur Zakarin who claimed a very need state win for Katusha

Perhaps tiring himself in the breakaway yesterday wasn't the best move from Dennis and save energy for today as today he will be no where close to the stage win despite being one of the favorites at the start
Dumoulin could save a small part of his Tour today though. A very good time of - 36'15 for the Dutch champion
But it won't be a stage win for Tom though! Kruijswijk was flying on today's course and he sets a time which is 26 seconds better than Dumoulin's
But Kruijswijk didn't enjoy the leader's seat for too long as the next rider to finish after him beat his time by 7 seconds and it looks like Chris Froome will take today's win
A fantastic ride by Barder today too, finishing with the same time as Tom Dumoulin. Sadly for the Frenchman, it won't be enough to keep the yellow jersey who will go onto the shoulders of Froome

Another day in the breakaway for Robert Gesink for the polka dots, but that's all it would be about today as the pack and especially Ag2r did not want to give a win on the mighty Tourmalet to the breakaway
Bardet seemed determined to get the yellow jersey back and with 7 kilometers to go, he made his first big move. He was quickly countered by Froome and Alaphilippe
Alaphilippe wouldn't be able to hang on with the best two riders in the GC for too long though and he would soon found himself in the red zone. At this point, another Frenchman was attempting to reach the front duo - Thibaut Pinot
Even though his move didn't look good enough to make it to the leading group, it was enough to have Kruijswijk react as Pinot looks to be his main rival for the podium. The Dutchman was clearly not enjoying a day as good as Pinot's though so it looks like it will be about damage control for the Jumbo rider today
Bardet's many attempts of distancing Froome seems to have caught up with him and with two kilometers behind the yellow jersey drops the Ag2r rider from his wheel and it looks like he might gain some significant time today
And he did. Froome won the stage with more than 1 minute advantage over Bardet and now has a lead of about 1 minute and a half over the Frenchman in the general clasiffication

| | | | | | | C. Froome | | D. Groenewegen | | R. Gesink | | T. Pogacar |
After losing Van Aert one week ago, Groenewegen's train would receive another blow today as Amund Jansen would be force to abandon the race after being diagnosed with a fracture as a result of a pretty bad crash
Gesink was once again in the breakaway but the combination of having a rather bad day and a big number of good climbers in the group it was clear that there was not much for him to do today and dropping back to help Kruijswijk after the first category one climb would be a better move
It was a shame Gesink didn't have the legs today as the breakaway would go on a win the stage win. The strongest four climbers (Calmejane, I. Izagirre, Formolo and Porte) went clear of the rest of the breakaway on the penultimate climb and would never be caught again
Bardet knows that he has an amazing opportunity to win the Tour this year and will do everything he can to do so. Today, he put once again multiples attacks on the final climb, but every single time they were followed by the same rider: Chris Froome
And just like yesterday, Froome followed every single one of Bardet's attacks and when he felt like the Frenchman has tired himself he would be the one attacking and actually gaining time. At the of the stage, Froome would increase his lead in the GC to over 2 minutes
At the front, Formolo was by far the strongest rider today and enjoying a fantastic solitary win today after leaving his fellow escapes behind soon after the last climb of the day was reached
Kruijswijk did not seem to have a great day at first and was not able to follow the early moves of the climb, but kept his own pace and in the end even managed to gain a few seconds on Thibaut Pinot to keep his podium place safe

We are back with the last week of the Tour de France and we are back with a day for the breakaway.
The last categorized climb of the day was not hard enough to make any big gaps between the breakaway group so we will see a sprint between the escapees. Jumbo's Mike Teunissen is the strongest sprinter in the group with stage winners Bettiol and Vichot in the group he will have to be careful and with 1 km to go he was very well positioned at the front of the group
Bettiol, as well as Lutsenko looked very strong in the last hundreds of meters of the stage but they were not fast enough to deny Teunissen a fantastic stage win. He came here to help Groenewegen, but now has delivered when given the chance to ride for himself

Yet another day for the breakaway, but this time with a harder climb before the finish. And we saw some big attacks being made there by the escapees.
Bob Jungels was the strongest on the climb and none of the fellow escapees were able to follow him, despite Jumbo's George Bennett's best efforts. Jungels denied Bennett the overall win in California and is now about to deny the Kiwi a stage win at the Tour de France
Jungels rode perfectly the rest of the stage and claimed a very deserved win in very bad weather conditions with a heavy rain, strong wind and even fog on some parts of the stage
The bad weather even saw some differences being made between the GC riders, who arrived in different groups, but the situation at the top stays the same as the first five riders in the GC

The Giro in Gesink's legs is finally starting to show as today he was dropped from the breakaway on the first category one climb of the day. Formolo was in the breakaway and managed to gain enough points to take the polka dots jersey from the Jumbo rider
Formolo wasn't strong enough to challenge for another stage win. The strongest rider in the breakaway was Fabio Aru who with 2 kilometers from the summit of the last climb of the day had dropped everyone from his wheel except for yesterday's winner, Bob Jungels
Jungels wouldn't be able to keep up for too long either though and Aru was alone at the top of the climb. The Italian continued his ride perfectly on the downhill and brought the team that is leading the teams classification their first win of the Tour
No big changes at the very top of the GC today except for Alaphilippe who was not able to follow the best riders on the last climb of the day and lost his place in the top 5 at the end of a very difficult stage for the Deceuninck rider

Davide Formolo missed out on the breakaway today which means he will be losing the polka dots jersey today. Yesterday's stage winner, Fabio Aru was there and he made the most of it on the categorized climbs
Aru was actually by far the strongest rider in the breakaway and after the claiming the summit of the last climb he went on to win the stage as well. Two in a row for the Italian
Bardet once again tried to distance Froome and get some time back on the yellow jersey, but his attempts were in vain as the last climb of the day was not hard enough to create any gaps between the big favorites

Davide Formolo tried very hard today to get back the polka dots on his shoulders, but UAE kept a very strong leash on the breakaway attempts and the Italian only ended up getting a few points, not enough to take over the jersey from Aru
Only one rider was actually allowed to gain a big gap on the pack today and it was Richie Porte. After many breakaway attempts, it looks like the Aussie's time has finally arrived today, in the last mountain stage of the Tour
Today was Bardet's last chance to do something and he once again was at the front attacking every chance he got. But once again Froome was there to counter it and did not lose the Frenchman's wheel at any point. It looks like the French Tour win won't happen this year either
Meanwhile in front of the leading GC duo, Porte was celebrating for the entire final kilometer his win. You could see how much it meant for him after all those unsuccessful attempts to finally get one right
