Great riding by both Leonardo and Ricardo today, and Ricco will not be pulled out of the race.

The Astana manager;
"We expected to win this stage, so we're a bit disappointed. Grabbing the yellow jersey is a small consolation, but not much of a surprise after yesterday."
"We did prove we've the strongest team in this race. we have our 4 leader in the top 15 of the GC and tomorrow we wont hasitate to control the race."
"We're not afraid of Ricco or other strong competitors. This stage only shows us who we have to pay attention to and who we'll have to beat to win tomorrow."
"As I said before we're taking this race day by day. Tomorrow we want to win the stage and we'll defend Contador his jersey." |

Euskatel are hopeful that with just 2 minutes behind we can claim a top ten going into P-R. Also we feel the route would be harder if ther was a steep downhill finish.

Just saying that so you could get a Sanchez Win. |

How dare you imply such a thing, I just feel that Downhill finishing sections allow a fuller range of talents to be showcased. Also the pain caused by a fall on a 9% decent must be worthy of tis tour.

Devolder is limiting his time loss decently. He is my best bid for the GC and he has a very good chance to make a big jump in the GC in Paris-Roubaix.

Tour de Pain - Stage 3 - Embrun - Alpe d'Huez - Part 1 (First 134km)
The first climbe today is the long Col du Lauteret - but it's summit is not the end as the riders head straight onto the Galibier. At the foot of the Lauteret, 4 men are in front.
Nocentini, Stubbe, Verbrugghe and Bosisio have a 29 second advantage over Bettini and Rebellin, 72 seconds on Augustyn, 95 seconds on Wegmann and 119 seconds on Szymyd and Laverde.
Augustyn climbs up to Bettini and Rebellen and looks to catch the front 4, taking the two Italians with him
With still 14km to the top of the Galibier, the peleton sees its first casualties: Dean and Baldato.
Back up front, Augustyn has dropped Bettini and Rebellin and managed to catch the 4 leaders
5 becomes 6 when Szymyd catches the front group, passing Bettini and Rebellin in the process
Bettini and Rebellin finally make contact at the top of the Galibier. The KoM points are uncontested and taken by Tom Stubbe.
They descend down the Galibier towards the short climb up the Col du Telegraph
When the peleton near the summit of the Galibier, 5 riders attack
Rodriguez, Pellizotti, Sella, Voigt and Efimkin take the minor KoM points and pull out a minutes lead going down the Galibier
The lead breakaway passed the Telegraph without incident but when these 5 reached it, Vladimir Efimkin attacked away
He quickly got a minute on the other 4, catching Fabian Wegmann in the process
The peleton are chasing the group though, and Sella sits up
Pellizotti refuses to give in though and bombs down the descent
He catches Efimkin and Wegmann
Jens Voigt also catches up, but doesnt stop there as he flies straight past
The others are caught but Voigt will keep going and the peleton halt their chase, allowing the German to go.
Back at the front of the race, Paolo Bettini wins the intermediate sprint at the foot of the Col de la Croix-de-Fer
(End of Part 1)

Tour de Pain - Stage 3 - Embrun - Alpe d'Huez - Part 2 (Col de la Croix-de-Fer - Ascent and Descent)
Jens Voigt starts to move towards the breakaway as he heads up the Col de la Croix-de-Fer
He catches up with Laverde, just 90 seconds behind the breakaway ~ and 5 minutes ahead of the peleton
Back in the peleton, Sella attacks!
He is countered by Marzio Bruseghin
Further back still, the first crash of the race - Baden Cooke and Aleksandr Usov go down
Back to the front and Jens Voigt has dropped Laverde and is coming closer to the lead group
While Bruseghin has clawed himself up to Sella
Bruseghin then just sits on Sella's wheel. Unhappy with this, Sella beckons him through
But Bruseghin refuses. Sella therefore attacks
Up front again, Jens Voigt has successfully caught the lead group
Sella has caught his teammate Laverde, but then so does Bruseghin. They are 2 and a half minutes behidn the lead group, and 3 minutes ahead of the quickening peleton.
Bruseghin is working with the CSF riders now but Sella does not care, and attacks away once again. This time Bruseghin has no response
Another man attacking is Jens Voigt, looking for maximum KoM points
His attack is weak - but it is still enough, he takes the full 40 points. (Although he will need more points at the top of Alpe d'Huez to stop Stubbe taking the jersey)
Verbrugghe and Bettini were dropped at the top of the climb and they will be caught in the descent by Sella
When the peleton neared the top, like on the Galibier, some riders attacked and looked to keep their gap on the descent
Soler, Gesink, Efimkin, Rodriguez, Piepoli, and Pellizotti.
During a slight rise, halfway down the descent. Soler senses the peleton are near and attacks
The other 5 were caught but Soler catches up with Sella's group, who have lost time on the lead breakaway group during the descent
The SolerSella group is then caught at the end of the descent
Oscar Sevilla then goes on the attack on the flat, but Silence are attentive and reel him back in
(End of Part 2, dont expect Part 3 until after 8PM (Thats in over an hour))

damn. I guess Silence is not attacking and just reeling in breaks. Popovych is probably doing all the work.
