Valio a Espena
Vuelta a Espana
Week 1
This year our GT appearance is in the Vuelta. As we have highly important races clashing it's not the strongest of teams but a combination of the youngsters needing the XP, our climbing core and Vastaranta, who is taking a round of honour.
The opening TTT went well placing us at 13th in the middle of the pack. Not that it matters much for us though.
Stage 2 was an even better day as w got to see the Finnish Champion Roope Nurmi in action showing the jersey beautifully in the break.
The break did a good job and Nurmi tried getting the KOM-jersey without luck, but a good show nonetheless.
In the end it became a sprint where our loan-put at Evonik, Liepins, managed to sprint to a 8th place on the stage!
Stage 3's only mention of us was rather unlucky as Faglum Karlsson crashed. Fortunately he managed to get back on his bike and finish the stage. He seems to be relatively ok.
Stage 4 were rather uneventful. Nurmi and Halme was caught on a picture of a crash but both seems unscathed by it.
Karlsson, Hasta and Lehtinen took the training part seriously on the first mountain top finish coming to the top in a 3-rider group with no one else.
Joni Kanerva riding his own tempo up the Port d'Envalira on stage 5.
On stage 6 we had Nurmi in the break again and this time they made it all the way to the finale.
That spurred Vastaranta on to counter attack as the peloton caught the break with just under 1 km left of the race.
Jukka made a massive acceleration rocketing past everyone under la flame rouge.
It would have been a huge surprise had he made it and he wouldn't have had a chance in a straight sprint anyway so it was beautiful to see him showing the jersey in such a manner despite it not giving a top result.
Liepins even took 2nd on the stage.
The following day the break made it all the way, but sadly without us in it.
Still Jukka was inspired by feeling the speed on stage 6 so he went for a regular sprint this time taking 6th in the sprint behind the break.

Valio a Espana
Vuelta a Espana
Week 2
Stage 8 featured another break that just made it, again without our presence.
Once again Vastaranta took part in the peelotons sprint and took another placing just outside the top 10.
The only thing that happened on the big mountain stage, stage 9, was that Lehtinen went down in a crash.
He still finished as 2nd best Valio-rider so he seems to be ok. Halme however missed the timelimit.
Stage 10 was even less eventful for us as Joni Kanerva just avoided being taken down when Kunshin crashed.
Stage 11 was another chance for Jukka to play sprinter.
Having spotted Liepins good form he took the wheel of our Latvian loan-out at Evonik and fought his way to a great 7th place on the stage.
Not bad at all for an aging puncheur!
The break took it (just) on stage 13 but once again Jukka was there abouts in the sprint.

Valio a Espena
Vuelta a Espana
Week 3
The boys started getting tired now going into the third week.
Vastaranta and Hasta crashed on stage 16.
Both made it back on their bikes and Jukka even managed to sprint to a 7th place on the stage, while Gökhan was hit harder and would go on to struggle his way through the final stages.
Lehtinen got in the break on the mountainpacked stage 19.
He did well but on the final climb he suddenly saw himself riding next to Andy Schleck.
Nurmi and Kanerva both missed the time limit.
We did not do anything on the last couple of stages, but it's worth mentioning Liepins sprinting to another 2nd place in Madrid.
As always a GT is not an easy task but I think we can be very happy with our achievements here. A lot of visibility for the Finnish champion in the first week, Vastaranta being a factor in the sprints giving him the farewell to the big stage that we had hoped for and Lehtinen proving resilient enough to climb GC places all through the race and being in the break towards the end.
Seeing Finnish riders doing so well in a GT means a lot for our project!

Bovilympian Cowtastrophy
Olympia's Tour
While "only" a C1 race Olympias Tour was destined to be one of our season highlights where Lo Cicero and our TT'ers should bring us in podium contention on every single stage.
A catastrophic prologue where Paillot finished 27th and Omarsson was our best rider did however give a bad feeling.
Then it was time for sprinting and as usual we were expected to pull hard to reel in the break.
Ivano decided to contest the intermediate sprints which ultimately left him with to little energy left for the final sprint.
On stage 3 Lo Cicero did win a sprint, sadly it was only the sprint for 8th place as the strongest sprinters had already pulled away with a small gap.
Ivano won the bunch sprint on stage 4, but once again he didn't get to sprint for the win as the break wasn't reeled in in time.
We did set a solid tim in the TTT - at last we thought so when we came in. Sadly in the end it only amounted to a 6th place and not much in terms of GC lifts as Paillot was our only TT'er who hadn't already lost time after working to hard in front of the peloton on the previous stages.
For the final stage we decided not to put too much effort into the chase hoping to force the other sprinter teams to do the work.
They failed and the break made it to the line. At the same time Ivano got boxed in and only just scrambled home another top 10.
All in all a terrible race for us!

Nice to see the impact of maxing out Lehtinen, from 106th to 51st in consecutive Vueltas.
At least the puns are still going strong, even if the race in Olympia's itself was not!

It was nice seeing FÃ¥glum Karlsson at the Vuelta, 77th already and still much to improve regarding beeing a decent GT rider!
Not so nice seeing Lo Cicero preforming like he did in Olympia.
Manninen & Liepens could be a fine duo in the next years coming. |

SN: I'm specially impressed at how much stronger he was in the mountains of the final week compared to the early climbs.
I have to do something to keep up the good mood at thee moment
viking: FÃ¥glum have had a very solid season all together.
Seeing this kind of sprinting from Lo Cicero really does hurt. It's hard to believe that it's the same rider who took a rankings top 10 last season and now barely makes stage top 10's
Manninen & Liepins could do some nice damage in CT next season...

Touring the Cow-way
Tour of Norway
As such Norway have never been a major interest for us, but still we want to do well in the races of our home region.
This time around we have come with Gautier for the hills and hoping for a good GC even though the TT's will be a disadvantage for him.
We will need the hilly races to be highly selective.
For the flat stages we have sent Manninen in the hope that he will be able to mix in a few times despite competition from the top level.
On stage 1 Manninen found a spot at the far back of a train.
he didn't get much of a result but he is still learning and every try gives valuable experience.
The following day we had Kulppi in the early break.
Manninen tried mixing in for thee sprint and got another top 20.
We always knew that the TT would be bad for us having out top TT'ers in Olympia Tour, but we had hoped for better from Gautier than 125th losing 4'27 on the stage winner.
Knowing he had to do something Gautier put in a bold attack on the hilly stage 4.
Sadly it didn't have too much effect though as the peloton managed to cross the hills almost undamaged and catching Gauiter and his companion before the finish line.
The final stage was classed as flat, but with a few lumps along the way we decided to send Cyril in the early break.
As the peloton upped the speed so did Gautier getting Stachowiak and Margailot with him.
The three entered the finale together and Cyril kept his cool.
He put in his sprint with perfect timing grabbing the stage win and jumping from 58th to 22nd in the GC.
Further back Manninen is starting to find his way around the bunch sprint and managed to make it a perfect day for us by grabbing a stage 7th as 3rd best sprinter.
Well done Matti!
Barring a disappointing TT I think we can be quite happy with the outcome of our trip to Norway. The final stage gave us a good few much needed points!
Also credit to Paajanen for a solid race giving him a 27th in the GC and a few points along with that.

May with Valio - DeLaval
We had a lot of important races this month.
First of all Scandinavian Open Road Race, which sadly didn't get as selective as hoped for and crowded roads in the finale forces us to be content with a 9th place from Gautier. Still our best result ever in this home race.
in Dunkerque we had our hops up after Kulppis 4th place after a crash on stage 1. Sadly things went as bad as feared and Olli got caught in the wrong place losing his GC.
Thankfully this was also the start of a very solid month from Vastaranta who not only took a GC 13th in France but even mixed in with the bunch sprinting in the Vuelta.
He might be getting older, but he still has the class of a true legend!
Speaking of the Vuelta that was a pretty good experience with Nurmi showing the champions jersey early in the race, Lehtinen showing the jersey late in the race by growing stronger and stronger the further into the race we got and Jukka grabbing a couple of stage top 10's by representing us nicely in the sprints.
A very nice trip to Spain all together for a team with no pressure on them, who managed to showcase how far Finnish cycling have come the last few years.
Quite the same couldn't be said about the team riding elsewhere in Europe at the same time as we really need to start scoring some more points and we had a bunch of important races in that regard this month.
In Berlin we got a solid 5th place from Lo Cicero, who then went on to (once again) slightly underperform in Olympias Tour, even though our biggest problem there was the shockingly low level from our TT'ers.
The disappointment in the Netherlands put a lot of pressure on the riders in Norway. At first it looked like it would turn up the same way but on the final two stages Gautier took things in to his own hands, Paajanen avoided bad days and Manninen found his sprinting legs to secure his first career top 10 outside NC's.
All in all it was a solid month, though not solid enough to get us out of trouble in the rankings.
Bull of the Month
On one side Vastaranta really deserves the title, but we also need to acknowledge when a star shows why he is the star by taking things into his own hands saving our month and making our hope of PCT 2018 live a little longer.
When we are under as much pressure in the rankings as we are every month is crucial and June is no different.
Especially Post Danmark Rundt is very important for us as we are bringing a very strong team featuring Paillot for the TT/GC and a full support team behind Lo Cicero to bring him stage wins.
Ivano will also be riding in Lincoln GP alongside our cobbles squad should the short repeated cobbled sector prove more decisive than we anticipate.
Though marked as flat Lac Megantic could prove tougher than expected with quite a bit of hill-riding along the way so we have decided to send both Lo Ciero and Gautier here making us prepared for whatever outcome.
There is no discussion about the leadership in Nelspruit though as that will be another race with Gautier in focus.
The month ends with Monterrey TTT, where we did well last year and will be sending our strongest TTT-setup aiming for at least a top 5.

LinCow Gone Poo
Lincoln GP
Looking only briefly at the profile we had hoped that this would be one of the less selective cobbles classics, but it quickly stood clear that we had gravely underestimated the cobbled hill.
Everything else went cow-shit as well as we did absolutely nothing and deservedly didn't get caught on tape once.

Lait au Megantic
Lac Megantic Classic
A trip to Canada to gather as many points possible against PT competition.
Main focus on Lo Cicero but with Gautier in a wild-card role should the hills prove to make a difference.
Omarsson hit the ground early on but after that things went according to plan.
So much so that come the final 3 km Vinther and Manninen had made a nice train for Lo Cicero.
Sadly it was destroyed by Kraftwerk, who made sure to block us when their leadout men shelled off leaving Ivano in a much poorer position than he had earned.
Nevertheless Manninen made a brilliant leadout. Unfortunately Ivano had jumped to another train in stead of trusting his teammate.
Ultimately Manninen blew up and finished 14th while Lo Cicero became 7th.
Had he followed Mattis leadout however he would have hada real shot at the win so that's very unfortunate!

Never trust the Post!
Post Danmark Rundt
This is by all measures a very important race for us.
We have a stage win goal and a candidate for just that on 4/5 stages and with Paillot and to a lesser extent Pökälä we even have candidates for good GC placings giving us much needed points.
Stage 1 immediately gave support to our worst fears as Paillot crashed early on.
Fortunately he seems to be ok, but the big question was how he would handle the coming stages.
Come the sprint we were nowhere to be seen even though Manninen did well to bring Lo Cicero near the front it was far to late and as usual Ivano didn't have much of a sprint anyway.
On stage 2 we took a bit more responsbility and helped crack the peloton in the wind getting rid of some prominent TT'ers in the process.
Ivano was dropped of in a much better position but once again failed to advance much in the sprint.
We always knew that the hard staage 3 to Vejle would be our biggest challenge and unfortunately the race was blown wide open with a range of attacks leaving us to defend and limit the time losses for Paillot and Pökälä as much as possible.
+ 2'15 is no disaster but still much worse than we had hoped for before the TT on the final day.
The upside waas Arissol showing good form making a decent GC a possibility for him as well.
On stage 4 Ivano was 4th in the sprint, but as usual he only puts in a decent sprint when a break have already won the stage.
The final day was labelledd as the one where Paillot should go for a stage win as well as a high place in the GC.
The GC high was slightly less ambitious than before the race since he had already lost time on the hilly stage, but anything less than a top 10 is still unacceptable.
While he did manage to sneak into the top 10 his stage result leaves much to be desired as he was never anywhere near challenging the stage winner.
Overall this was another disappointing race. A total of 2 stage top 10's in a race with a (realistic) stage win goal is just horrific.
Still it's a slight comfort seeing 5 riders score points through the GC at least.

No Spirit - No Milk
Nelspruit Classic
We went to South Africa with a knife on our throat desperately needing to outscore our closest competition with a margin to stay in the fight for survival.
Omarsson went down early but apart from that things went according to plan as Gautier was perfectly placed heading into the final climb.
He fought, but didn't have the legs needed today.
Ultimately a 10th isn't that bad but with Euskaltel and Kraftwerk bot outscoring us we are one step further from survival it seems.

June with Valio - DeLaval
We had a lot of important races again this month.
The cobbles disappointed as usual and Lo Cicero followed that up in style.
First he neglected to follow a near perfect leadout from Manninen in Lac Megantic Classic.
More or less the same thing happened in Post Danmark Rundt. The team placed Lo Cicero where he needed to be for the sprint and the Italian blew it.
Put together with a somewhat disappointing TT from Paillot we didn't really enjoy the trip to Denmark much.
As usual it was up to Gautier to save the month but he continued the classic performance of our leaders this season by failing to make his mark in the final km resulting in a 10th place.
All in all June put us one step closer to relegation.
Jesse Kaislavuo - Team Reddit
Kaislavuo did his job helping his team achieve a 9th place in Norway - the only race of the month for Jesse.

Bull of the Month
In a somewhat disappointing month in terms of result the award goes to a helper that did a great job again and again despite his leader not being up to the task of finishing the job:
July will be a quiet month for us with only three classics (well four counting the delayed Monterrey), two of whom we have any expectations.
Paillot and Pökälä will obvious lead us on Isle of Man while Gautier will be leading the team in Norway.
In Kenya I'll be happy if the jersey is caught on camera.

Moohterrain and the Isle of Mooh
Monterrey TTT
We have been in Monterrey every single year. Early on mainly due to having the Mexican TT-champion on the team but last year we even managed to take a podium.
Obviously another podium would be nice but a top 5 was our internal goal.
Losing 5 seconds to Generali at the intermoohdiate time (while being commended on our puns) was a decent start.
Still in the run for a good result on the second intermediate.
The effort was a little miscalculated in the end as Arissol couldn't quite follow the rest in the end.
Still the seconds we lost on that didn't matter much as we just scraped home our 5th place but with a decent gap to 4th.
I'm actually quite happy with 5th - especially since the boys rode the race without wheels!

Isle of Man ITT
Paillot and Pökälä went straight from Mexico to the Isle of Man for an individual time trial.
Paillot aiming for at least a top 10, preferably a top 5 and Pökälä hoping for a top 20.
Joni Kanerva was just there to learn.
Pökälä was off to a phenomonal start holding 2nd best time on the early intermediates for a long time ultimately bagging an 8th place, which is great for him!
Paillot rode a fairly anonymous race to finish 11th.

Udder Cowtastrophy
Ringerike GP
A Scandinavian racee is always important as is a hilly race this season so a hilly classic in Norway does stand out as one of the most important races.
Home favourite Boasson Hagen started the attacking early on.
Gautier was awake when the counter-attacks came.
Sadly in the end only Boasson Hagen managed to separate himself from the peloton and Gautier did not do sufficiently well in the finale.
In fact he did outright horrific being nowhere to be seen and Omarssons 32nd place seems the most positive we can take home from Norway.
Just not good enough!

Moooh-ve along - nothing to see
Kenya Mountain Classic
Out of all the races this season this could very well be the classic we have the lowest expectations for.
Omarsson got in the early break which was nice of course.
Would have been even better had it been one of our three half-decent climbers though since it didn't even last up the first climb.
In stead they took it easy as expected/as usual not even trying to secure some minor points.

We were even less visible in this flat classic using the Paris - Tours route.
