Criterium International - Stage 1
This 3 day race has a flat stage, a hilly stage and a time trial. It's an interesting test for riders as it requires skills in a wide variety of areas.
High Road is sending a team to get experience, with Edvald Boasson Hagen to contend for the overall.
Leader: Edvald Boassen Hagen
Free: John Devine
Teammate: Taylor Phinney
Teammate: Fabio Duarte
Teammate: Craig Lewis
Teammate: Adam Hansen
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao
Teammate: Tony Martin
Stage 1:
A fairly level course, should come down to a sprint.
For whatever reason, the pace was pretty high today and several of our riders got dropped or were struggling to keep up. Edvald wasn't feeling very confident about a sprint on this rainy day so he made a late attack on the stage to try to steal a victory.
Unfortunately the pelaton was quick to react and the sprinters reeled him back in just before the line. Francesco Gavazzi of Lampre won the stage.
Stage Results:
1 Francesco Gavazzi Lampre 4h17'39
2 Elia Rigotto Team Milram s.t.

Criterium International - Stage 2
This is the hilly stage in this race. Keeping up near the fron will by pivotal for Boassen Hagen to win the race.
The breakaway had been caught, but starting to climb the second to last hill nobody seemed to be making a move. Boasson Hagen decided he'd have a go at it and see if he could make something happen.
But the favorites countered. Edvald found himself struggling to hang on the back of the break group.
In the end, Voight, Zabriskie and Grivko were just too strong and Edvald fell back into 5th. He was able to gain some time on the pelato though.

E3 Prijs Vlaanderen
Another cobbled race leading up to the big ones. Big George is riding this one for us along with our entire first line cobbled team. Other big names like Gilbert, Cancellera, Nuyens and Hoste are all here as well. Should be a tough race.
The pace gets quite high through the hilly cobbled sections in the second half of the race and the lead group gets narrowed down to those shown here. High Road has 3 in the group... Hincapie, Burghardt and Hammond.
Gilbert attacks on one of the late cobbled hills and blows the group up. It's a frantic rush from the other favorites to try to catch up.
But none of them could do it. Gilbert rides home with a big win.
Almost 2 minutes back, the chasing group of 13 containing Hincapie and Hammond battles for second and third.
And Hoste and O'Grady round out the podiums.
Results:
1 Philippe Gilbert Française des Jeux 5h35'23
2 Leif Hoste Silence - Lotto + 1'51

March Review
A very good month for High Road. It began with George winning the Omloop Het Volk and continued with him winning two stages in the Tirenno-Adriatico and winning the race itself. He also had an impressive second in Milano-Sanremo.
Hammond and Burghardt took first and second in Nokere-Koerse as well, and Boasson Hagen took a nice top 5 in the Criterium International. A good month.
Goals:
Magazine:
The Pro tour rankings still haven't changed since January. April should cause a big shakeup with several pro-tour races on the calendar. |

KBC-Driedaagse De Panne - Stage 1
This race starts with a cobbled stage, then has two flat stages followed by a 12km time trial. It leads nicely into Ronde van Vlaanderen, the first big cobbled race of the year. We'll be sending mainly cobbled riders with a few younger guys to get some race experience. We thing this race fits Hincapie's skill-set perfectly.
Team:
Leader: George Hincapie
Free Rider: Marcus Burghardt
Free Rider: Roger Hammond
Teammate: Marcel Sieberg
Teammate: Andreas Klier
Teammate: John Devine
Teammate: Fabio Duarte
Teammate: Taylor Phinney
Stage 1:
This cobbled stage could easily become the deciding stage if someone gets a sizeable gap. High Road sent Klier on the break and told him to pick up mountain points but otherwise work sparingly. If the break stayed away we think he'll be strong enough to take the stage.
Klier performed well, but the break would be caught fairly easily.
On the last hill a short spell before the last cobbled section, High Road attacked. Hammond led out Burghardt and Hincapie in the move.
Hitting the last cobbled stretch, Hincapie had gotten a lead over Burghardt and Hammond, and the two of them were pushing to close in while Hincapie let up slightly.
Burghard crossed to Hincapie, but Hammond just didn't have enough and shouted "GO, GO, GO!" at them as he struggled up some of the late hills leading up to the finish.
Marcus and George poured it on and created a sizeable gap. As the neared the last rise Hammond was getting caught by the chase.
Hincapie waved Burghardt past him in the final KM and the two came across the line for a solid High Road 1-2. They gained over 2 minutes on the following group containing the likes of Ballan, Devolder, Hoste, and Flecha.
In other news, Phinney was the last person to finish the stage before the time limit. We were a bit worried about that as we wanted him to get experience riding the rest of the race.
Stage Results:
1 Marcus Burghardt Team High Road 4h23'39
2 George Hincapie Team High Road s.t.

KBC-Driedaagse De Panne - Stage 2
A flat stage with a couple of classified hills. Should be a mass sprint.
And it was. Maaskaant comes away with a somewhat suprising win over the likes of Eekhout, Paolini, Bettini, Hunter and Davis. Phinney finishes dead last in the stage for the second day after leading the pelaton on the chase for the first half a day. He worked his butt off keeping the breakaway from getting too far away.

KBC-Driedaagse De Panne - Stage 3
An even flatter stage. THR will be pulling back the breakaway but otherwise won't be much involved in this race as we don't have a sprinter of note.

KBC-Driedaagse De Panne - Stage 4
The time trial to end this tour can sometimes play a role... but all it really matters this year for High Road is to determine who'll win the race between two of our own riders.

Ronde van Vlaanderen
Here we go. We finally get to the second Pro Tour race of the season. Hincapie, Hammond and Burghardt are all in peak form, Klier is getting close and it's time for the big classics.
The team is totally focused on Hincapie for this race, with Burghardt and Hammond as alternates should Hincapie get a flat or wreck later in the race. Eisel is taking part as our sprinter, but he'll be helping out the other three as the chances of a sprint with this route aren't too high. He'll play more of a role in Paris-Robaix.
Leader: Hincapie
Lieutenant: Hammond
Lieutenant: Burghardt
Teammate: Klier
Teammate: Sieberg
Teammate: Knaven
Teammate: Grabsch
Sprinter/Teammate: Eisel
The action starts toward the back end of the race with an attack by Devolder.
An odd tactic as Boonen doesn't follow. As Devolder, Ballan and Hincapie hit the cobbles and settle into a rhythm... Flecha just continues his attack and builds a lead over the three chasers.
Hoste bridges over to the chase group. but they don't seem to be gaining much on Flecha.
Hincapie starts an attack to try to bridge to Flecha but quickly realizes he won't escape the chase group and eases off. Ballan and Devolder continue attacking and Hincapie latches on Devolders wheel leading up to the sprint.
Flecha cruises across the line, winning the Ronde van Vlaanderen!
Ballan takes second and Hoste outsprints Hincapie for 3rd, keeping High Road off the podium.
Not as good as we hoped for, but a decent race for Big George. Burghardt ends up taking 9th... picking up some useful pro-tour points for the team.

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco - Stage 1
I'll be honest. We were so focused on getting ready for the big 3 classics that we kind of overlooked this race. The original plan was to have Lovkvist in good shape to make a run at the GC... but we didn't get him enough race days for that to happen.
So instead Kim Kirchen is going to be our leader here. This is his first time on the road this season so he's not in good shape. We're just hoping for a top 10... maybe a top 5... so we can get some points in the pro tour rankings.
And to be honest... it won't be easy. This race contains a LOT of big names. Evans, Leipheimer, Contador, Frank Schleck, Voigt, Rebellin, Cunego, Ricco, Sanchez, Piepolli, Valverde, Andy Schleck, Kloden, Menchov, Popavych and Gesink.
The Team:
Leader: Kim Kirchen
Free Rider: Thomas Lövkvist
Free Rider: Kanstantsin Siutsou
Teammate: Tony Martin
Teammate: Sergio Luis Henao
Teammate: Adam Hansen
Teammate: Morris Possoni
Teammate: Diego Ulissi
Stage 1:
A hilly route that will immediately set up the GC table and tell us who's in the race.
Siutsou goes on the break immediately and works to take the mountains jersey right out of the gate. He takes most of the mountain sprints and will be wearing that jersey tomorrow.
As the leaders approach the last categorized climb they make their moves. Cadel Evans leads the attack with only Beltran and Sanchez able to follow.
But Evans runs out of gas on the final climb to the finish line. Beltran powers away and takes the stage.
In the following group, Kirchen follows Frank Schleck's wheel to take 5th on the stage.
Stage Results:

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco - Stage 2
While having some decent hills in the middle of the stage, the flat finish should favor sprinters.
Siutsou tried to get away in the break but was unable to do so. Possoni went instead and picked up a few climbing points, but didn't win either mountain sprint.
Just before the break was caught as the pelaton came down the hill toward the flat a major crash occurred. We were shocked as we started hearing the names of those involved on the race radio... Evans, Sanchez, Leipheimer, Valverde, Chavanel, Kohl, Piepoli, Andy Schleck, Popovych. This would impact the race in a big way.
Luckily we escaped relatively unscathed. Only Diego Ulissi came off his bike... and he wasn't hurt.
Kirchen tried to break away and get a small lead before the sprint but he was quickly swallowed up as the sprint began and finished 8th. Fabian Wegmann took the stage win.
Those falling and the riders who went back to help lost 2 minutes and 31 seconds on those who finished with the sprint.

Gent-Wevelgem
The second of the big cobbled classics, we're hoping to improve on Hincapie's 4th place finish in the first. The team will be the same as in Ronde van Vlaanderen.
Leader: George Hincapie
Lieutenant: Marcus Burghardt
Lieutenant: Roger Hammand
Sprinter: Bernhard Eisel
Teammate: Andreas Klier
Teammate: Bert Grabsch
Teammate: Servais Knaven
Teammate: Marcel Sieberg
The stage was VERY quiet at first. There wasn't even a TV break... very little action of any kind leading up to the first two cobbled hills on the route. We moved our riders up to the front to look for an attack to latch onto. Hincapie and Eisel were both feeling very poor today so we felt we'd need to try something rather than let it end in any kind of sprint or try a move in the last 10 km.
But nobody attacked on the first hill... so on the second... we attacked!
After launching Hincapie and Burghardt, Hammond wasn't able to keep pace up the hill so faded back to the pack. George and Marcus started getting a good lead though.
The two were working evenly as opposed to Hincapie resting. He was't sure he'd be able to survive to the end so he wanted to make sure a High Road rider won the race. The two were motoring over the flat in between the sets of hills and their gap was staying right around a minute and a half. They picked up the pace a little as they hit the first of the second set of hills.
And as they were coming down the last cobbled hill... they still had a lead of a minute and a half over the pelaton.
They put on their big gears and started really pounding away along the flat section. With less than 10km to go their lead had only dropped 10 seconds.
Marcus and George had this one in the bag... Marcus waved George past him just before the sprint. This was George's team and this was the win George had wanted for a long time.
In the sprint amongst the 30 chasers, Greg Van Avermaet kept ahead of a flying Tom Boonen to take 3rd. High Road riders Hammond and Eisel wer still strong enough to take 6th and 7th. Klier also finished in the lead group at 23rd.
With this win, High Road takes over the lead in the Pro Tour rankings, and Hincapie takes over the individual lead (at least until Pais Vasco is finished).
Congrats George and Marcus!

Robaix will be interesting.
In general I haven't played with teams who have top flight cobbled riders. Played a long game with CA, but Hushovd isn't in the top tier like Hincapie is (those 2-3 points in COB make a huge difference).
With Hushovd I just tried to hold on and finish as high as possible.
With Hincapie I've tried several different strategies to get wins, and attacking on cobbled hills has worked well (or countering the attacks of others).
Paris-Robaix is pretty flat though. I'm not sure how well an attack to break free will work. I'm not sure if I should be concentrating more on helping Eisel than Hincapie. |

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco - Stage 3
Kanstantsin Siutsou went on the break in this stage to pick up mountain points.
As the break went on, Wim Van Huffel and Leonardo Piepoli were able to power away from the rest of the breakaway group who were all nearly spent
The two were keeping away, but the pelaton was slowly closing. Nocenti attacked late and was bridging the gap. Could the two hold on?
They do! Van Huffel wins the stage and Nocenti bridges the gap and moves into second place overall.

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco - Stage 4
Another hilly stage, and Sitsou goes on the break again to pickup points in the mountains competition.
Attacks started on the late hlls and Kirchen and Lovkvist try to follow. The two are in a Gerolsteiner chase group with Rebellin, Wegman and Schumacher trying to catch Asterloa and Ricco.
But they wouldn't get there in time. Asterloa takes the stage.
And Rebellin wins the sprint to take 3rd over Kirchen and Lovkvist.
Forgot to export, and the pictures I took last night were of the wrong stage. Oops.
ops:
*edit* Okay, figured it out. Going back and taking pics of the standings after the race ALWAYS shows the final result in the total-time section... even if you are looking at an earlier stage. This is what was confusing me.
Stage results:
1. Asterloa
2. Ricco
3. Rebellin - +28'
4. Kirchen
5. Lovkvist
6. Wegmann
7. Schumacher
8. Nocentini
9. Ventoso
10. Colom

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco - Stage 5
Another hilly stage. The meaningful attacks started on the fourth classified climb when Ardila, Piepoli and Botcharov took off on an early punch attempt.
The favorites attacked on the next hill and were able to catch Botcharov and Piepoli. Ardila had already been dropped.
In the downhill Kirchen and Piepoli were unable to hang on to Voigt, Kloden, Rebellin and Ricco.
And Voight powers by the other break members to take the stage win. Kirchen completely breaks in the downhill and Piepoli takes 5th ahead of him. Kirchen still gained a few seconds on the Pelaton.
Stage Results:
1. Voigt
2. Rebellin
3. Kloden
4. Ricco
5. Piepoli +1'05"
6. Kirchen +1'29"
7. Sitsuo + 1'49"
8. Trofimov
9. Wegelius
10. Arrieta
Again... forgot to export. |

Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco - Stage 6
The final stage of Pais Vasco was a total disaster. Kirchen had been maintaining a top 10... but his time trialing issues really hurt him here. He dropped WAY down the rankings, and Lovkvist who had a good ride only moved up to 11th... which gets us no pro-tour points.
This is making us think Gerdeman may need to ride the Tour... I'm not sure how good we feel about Kirchen there in the time trials.
