Jonathan Vaugters, team manager at Slipstream, has commented that Christian Vandevelde is capable of getting a top 10 - or maybe even a top 5 - in Tour de France.
In my opinion, that's crazy |

Two years ago in the Vuelta? yes. This year in the Tour? no.

I don't know... top 10 might be possible.
He was 25th in last year's tour riding in a support role. With a team helping him? Top 15 seems very reasonable. Top 10 isn't totally out there. Top 5 probably is. |

He could do top 15 yes, but he'd have to fight to reach top 10.

I have compiled a list of some 20 riders who i think will battle it out for a top 10 place. They are in no particular order:
Sastre
Evans
Valverde
Sammy Sanchez
H. Zubeldia
Popovych
Kirchen
Cunego
Menchov
Gesink
Dekker
Moreau
Gomez Marchante
Soler
Cobo
Schleck(s)
Karpets
Pereiro
Rogers
Astraloza
Danielson
Vandevelde
Contador, Leipheimer, and Kloden won't be here so that elimanates 3 possible contenders. Some will not participate in the race for one reason or another, so you can elimanate a couple more. Looking at that list, and with a couple of people not racing Le Tour i think he can do a top 15, but a top 10 might be tough. Danielson might be a better shot at a top 10 though.

Vande Velde has always been underrated but when he goes out and isn't flogging himself for the team he can kick ass.

while I agree Vaughters can't possibly be right, that's a bit of an exaggeration. I'll take Vande Velde over Van Summeren as a stage race any time.
If you meant to exaggerate to make a point, then I'm sorry if I misunderstood.

Cordero's gone senile apparently. It's a shame. the made actually made some sense for a while (before anyone reminds me of Cordero's insane views on everything and anything, notice I said "some sense", not "a lot"
The Vuelta a EspaƱa may be introducing a radical new format in an attempt to make the race more exciting. Race director Victor Cordero has proposed a first week of "play-offs" for the race sometime in the future.
"We could have a first five or six-day phase with flat stages, mountain stages and a time trial," Cordero said at the "International Forum for the future of Cycling" in Paris on Thursday, according to the Reuters news agency. "We could have team standings to select the 16 teams to continue the race."
After eliminating the first few teams, the remaining squads would have the option of bringing in new rides for the rest of the race. "The riders taking part in the playoffs would not necessarily be the ones participating in the rest of the race," he added.
The move would be aimed at making the first week of the race more entertaining. "Usually, the first week of a Grand Tour is not very interesting," he admitted. The Spaniard further suggested that the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia could eventually also adopt the proposed format.
In any case, the use of the "play-offs" will not be implemented right away. "We have stages planned in the Netherlands in 2009 so it would not possible before 2010," Cordero said. "Moreover, we still need to discuss it further."

Before Roubaix Vaughters predicted that Masskant would do well. I think if anyone would have predicted a 4th place finish they would have been crazy. A Top 10 place is not totally out of place. It is possible. He might be the team leader. He is rider better this year than he has in a long time. It can happen. That is why they race. You never know what will happen, who will crash, etc. |

indeed, I really am wondering how a person with such ideas can become the race director of a grand tour
