2008 Tirreno - Adriatico
issoisso
A bad crash in the time trial at Tirreno-Adriatico left Linus Gerdemann (High Road) with a broken femur. He told radsport-news.com that he will have surgery on Monday, in Innsbruck/Austria and is likely out of competition for six weeks. This may also dampen his hopes for the Tour de France.

The German had just passed Danilo Di Luca, who started one minute before him, when he touched the barriers in a corner and did a somersault. The crash happened less than two kilometres from the finish. He also hit and badly bruised his tibia on the curb. After the race, the High Road rider was taken away in an ambulance to a nearby hospital.

He said that "when I checked out the course beforehand, I thought I could ride it on the handle bar [in the time trial position - ed.] I was going about 60km/h and somehow slipped."

Doubly bad luck for Gerdemann was fact that he seemed to be en route to winning the race. "Based on the intermediate times I probably would have finished second to Cancellara. That would have been enough for overall victory. And that without real preparation." Gerdemann had a 30-second lead over Cancellara going into the time trial. Eventual runner-up, David Zabriskie (Slipstream Chipotle - H30) ended the race 22 seconds behind the Swiss rider. Gerdemann did manage to get up and finish the race, 1'16 behind Cancellara.

It's well done by him to actually finish the race despite a broken leg.

It's pretty incredible. The final km he rode was uphill on cobbles Frown

amazing Freire, he won before Pozzato, Di Luca, Visconti Smile
Freire really timed his jump/sprint well :-)
fav for MSR imo

and very nice also how Cancellara and Gasparotto attacked and how Cancellara manged to keep up with him and even counterattacked him

super stage Smile

Indeed. I hope he will beat the crap out of boonen in RoubaixB) Oh, and win Tirenno - Adriatico of course!

Xavier
both look likely atm Smile

Well, Cancellara might be strong now, but that's not a guarantee for him being strong in the April classics. Time will tell, but I'd prefer if Breschel woke up Wink

Xavier
woke up for what? Smile to win a classic?

He's been pretty much invisible during the races he has participated in (Tirreno being one of them). He's aiming for the classics, so he really need to improve over the next couple of week if he wants to fight it out for the win in the classics Wink

Kim Andersen (CSC's directeur sportif) said a few months ago that Matti looks really sharp this season, but so far his best result is 6th in Trofeo Laigueglia. Matti did tell that he crashed in both Het Volk and KBK, so I hope that's why he didn't do well in those races. I'm really hoping he can improve on his 14th place from the 2007 Paris-Roubaix.

He and Chris Anker are the only danish riders with any considerable potential right now, so it's important he rides well in the April classics. He's also racing Milan-San Remo but despite him being a quite strong sprinter I don't think he has the stamina to be considered a top ten candidate.

I really don't think he has the top speed or positioning skills either

Me neither, I was just highlighting that he is a great finisher. I think he got a 3rd in a mass sprint finish in last year's Giro d'Italia.

I think "great" is really stretching it. I remember him coming third, but I also remember there were no good sprinters left by then except Petacchi and Richeze

And even then he only came immediately behind them in one of the sprints
