Believe us when we say that the goal was never to ride against you but to catch the break in order for JJ to sprint for a good result.

Birt should have stayed in the Peloton :'( but I guess he went back and tried his hardest to get Konig back. Screw you Argos!
Now any chance of a decent GC result for Birt has been flushed down the toilet.

The nationality bonus is absolutely ludicrous here. GVA basically handing in his notice here. Dreadful. Nothing Luigi can do about this but it's turning into a farce. Rolling Eyes

@knockout, what GC leader is that? I'm not aware I have one. Does Mr 4th place want a cookie for the AI boosting his performance?

Bit of stick for Argos here, only goal was for Degenkolb to cross the line first. How do we profit from Konig crashing when we have Ghita being second last leadout... (now realized I didn't pick another sprinter).

Win in each GT, happy with that, hopefully we can take another few.

Wow, how on earth can Cio get beaten by Valverde and Purito. Time to join breaks, which is what you're supposed to do as a wildcard team

Be kind to GVA, you can only do so much against nuclear powered super monsters.

Can we apply that green skin The Rider made to Movistar, because they are clearly so doped to be radioactive...

Also wtf is FDJ doing... oh that's right! We never do anything

We are back at the mountains after a pair of flat stages. We end today with the Alto Peñas Blancas climb which will break the peloton in pieces. We’ll see how the riders stand for real after a few easier stages. Riders can make an comeback or drop down the rankings easily.

It took a while for anybody trying to make a break. Santaromita (BMC), Pardilla (MTN), Moser (CAN), Casar (FDJ) and Silin (Astana) are the ones that make a breakaway happen. it quickly got to over a minute and it looked like a 5 man breakaway today.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0113_zps2d6694c7.jpg
the what looked to be the breakaway being formed

However it’s wasn’t the breakaway for today’s stage exactly. When the gap got around 1,5 minutes more riders make a do or die effort to get to the breakaway. This didn’t affect Movistar ambition to close the gap on the breakaway so the final breakaway was the previous mentioned 5 riders with Voigt (RadioShack), Piedra (Caja Rural), Brambilla (Omega Pharma) and Martínez (Euskaltel).

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0124_zps91ed4097.jpg
the full breakaway of today

Team NetApp seems to have a bad Vuelta so far. Like predicted by the commentators in team time trial: if König and Birt have trouble getting results, it will be a long Vuelta for them and it has so far. König has done great in some stages but a crash in yesterdays stage made an end to all GC ambitions set by the team’s manager. Birt has only shown himself in negative spotlight and he’s looking to chance that when the made an attack to get up to the break.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0125_zpsb933b795.jpg
the aussie is going alone

It wasn’t meant to be because Birt couldn’t bridge the gap to the breakaway before the peloton caught him again. however he wasn’t keen on giving up, he was again part of a trio that tried to bridge the gap. This time together with Sánchez (Belkin) and Serpa (Lampre). None could make it to the breakaway though. At the start of the final climb we had the breakaway with a 55 second gap to Danielson (Garmin) which has a 25 second gap to the peloton. The peloton however had a 13 minute gap to Koch (Cannondale). He’s currently the last rider in the race and might miss the time limit today.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0126_zps597e0977.jpg
the situation at the final climb

Froome is the first to pick up the fight for the red jersey! Valverde however won’t let him get far.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0127_zps5b07fd6b.jpg
The breakaway is just up the road but racing is just as hard as all riders are equally capable to take the win if they are able to stay infront of the elite riders. Where Froome picked up the glove in the peloton, Martinez was the first one to do it in the break. Brambilla and Piedra are trying to stay in his wheel while the rest wait for now. Meanwhile an elite group has formed behind the break. König (NetApp), Froome and Urán (Sky), Valverde (Movistar), Rodriguez (Katusha), Martin (Garmin) have found eachother

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0128_zps27c2c65c.jpg
Froome has accelerated again and has a small distance to the other elites. He has caught the first members of the breakaway where Martinez has joined with Brambilla and Piedra.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0130_zps4bfdad3e.jpg
Froome is now leading the stage when he brought the breakaway back together. Rodriguez didn’t wanted to let that gap get bigger and attacked with Valverde and Konig in his wheel. Urán closes the gap in his own pace.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0131_zps0ace8668.jpg
Valverde attacked again and only Froome and Rodriguez are able to follow. König leads the breakaway back to the front however. With 2.4 km to go this is how the race looks

Spoiler
Groupo del Lider: Valverde (MOV), Rodriguez (KAT), Froome (SKY), König (TNE), Silin (AST), Santaromita (BMC), Brambilla (OPQ), Pardilla (MTN)
<30 seconds>
Groupo Horner: Horner (RLT), Urán (SKY), Martínez (EUS), Piedra (CJR)
<16 seconds>
Jurgen Van den Broeck (LTB)
<30 seconds>
Groupo Martin: Martin (GRS), Fuglsang (AST), Sánchez (EUS), Caruso (CAN), Ghita (ARG), Owniak (BMC), Riblon (ALM), Danielson (GRS), Voigt (RLT)
<47 seconds>
Casar (FDJ)
<17 seconds>
Intxausti (MOV), Anton (EUS), Moreno (KAT), Majka (TST), Hintermuller (MTN), Moser (CAN)

The BOTD members couldn’t follow the pace from König anymore just before Urán and Horner could catch up with the others.
i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0132_zps2e741802.jpg
Konig was the first that started sprinting but having dictated the pace the whole climb has left him worn out. Froome and Valverde seem to have the upper hand but Rodriguez is hanging on Valverde’s wheel

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0133_zpse64fc768.jpg
But that’s all he’s doing as Valverde wins in Estepona! Froome and Rodriguez could only match Valverde acceleration but not go over it. König bravely hangs on to 4th place without losing time on them

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0134_zps816a778d.jpg
Urán and Horner could almost touch the leaders but lose an estimated 29 seconds an photo finish is however needed to decide 4th and 5th place.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0136_zps8191659f.jpg
Jurgen van den Broeck just made it inside the first group of breakaway riders and might get the same time as Horner and Urán. Shortly after, Fuglsang, Ghita, Sánchez, Caruso and Daniel Martin finished in the same group

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0137_zps96f10a0a.jpg
Urán takes 5th place and he and Horner lose 28 seconds. Van den Broeck doesn’t get the same times as Urán and Horner and is 41 seconds behind Valverde. Fuglsang, Ghita and Sánchez all get the same time of 1’06” while Caruso and Martin loses 1’32”. Ten Dam finished 22th and lost 2’13”

In the GC Valverde strengthens his and his team domination over the Vuelta this year. Rodríguez is now 2nd and Froome 3rd. Horner is in the middle of an Sky sandwich with him at 4th and Urán at 5th. Daniel Martin is down to 6th. Fulgsang is down to 6th while Sánchez moves up to 8th. König is now up to 23rd.

Brave effort again by Ivan. Shame the breakaway was caught by the madmen behind.

U25 competition's a bit close. One second between Majka and Ghita, with Owniak not far behind either. Could be fun. Grin

Nice race from Damian so far <3 Getting crucial time on Majka, hopefully we can secure the Youth jersey in the coming stages Smile

At least we got in the breakaway this time. Not that it really matters with the way Movistar is trying to win every stage. Smile

F yeah, what a comeback by König. No compromise. He wants to catch up again to the Top 10 and he knows he has to work for that, sacrificies a possible stage win for pacing. Very good to see he has recovered so well from that crash. Hope he gets at least a stage win out of it soon.

Also, great stuff by Birt, very eager to get into the breakaway. Hopefully next time he will finally be lucky enough to make it. Numerous sightings by now.

Great report Luigi!

SSJ2Luigi wrote:
Team NetApp seems to have a bad Vuelta so far. Like predicted by the commentators in team time trial: if König and Birt have trouble getting results, it will be a long Vuelta for them and it has so far.

Haha, but actually no, it's been quite a good Vuelta for us. Sure a crash sets us way out of contention, but I've been happy with the results they and especially König dragged in so far. But having two options for the Vuelta with some potential breakaway riders is really the best we as a Pro Continental Team can do.

MTN in the break. Complaining actually worked. Now for a break with Pardilla in it to succeed.
