Kittel cleans up the stage; Martin remains in Yellow; German riders peaking at the right time
Stage 2 of the Paris-Nice and a more energetic effort today from the riders as they tackled nearly 200km in varying weather conditions that saw them ride through a downpour, as well as the baking heat.

Tony Martin continued his early form by remaining at the front of the peloton to hold on to his Yellow jersey come the end of the stage, whilst fellow German Marcel Kittel of Argos-Shimano had the perfect lead out in the sprint finish, to edge past Kristoff (Katusha) to snag the stage win.

Kittel spoke "I have to thank the team, everything setup the way we wanted and although I knew Kristoff could challenge me, it was always down to me to prove my power and pace"

Elsewhere the stage started to have casualties due to the conditions, notably De Clercq of Lotto-Belisol tumbled in a bad way and wound up over 7 minutes behind. Whilst punctures also caused chaos with various riders having to exert that extra bit of energy to get back to the pack.

Martin's Gone'; But Kittel Keeps on Winning
by: Cycling News

Above: Kittel again snatches victory from the Katusha riders, as thats 2 stages from 3 in the Paris-Nice

Marcel Kittel continues to dominate Paris-Nice
Drama personified is how you could describe todays stage as we had yet another burst of brilliance by Kittel to win his 2nd stage in 2 days. We also had 2 major crashes, the second of which took care of the 'then' Yellow Jersey wearing Tony Martin, as he had to withdraw from the event following a mass pileup.

Martin who looked comfortable, fell foul of a pack that tangled together and left him with leg injuries that prevented him from carrying on any further. A previous crash also split up the peloton as a mass of riders came down on a slippy exit from a roundabout section, as Lotto-Belisol came off worse as a team with half of their train involved at some point.

i167.photobucket.com/albums/u150/elsworthmay/pns3crax_zpsa2a3fb69.jpg

However these incidents will not take anything away from the dominant ride that Marcel Kittel once again endeared us with his sprint abilities to this time squeeze by another Katusha rider, Porsev.

Porsev and Kristoff of Katusha said "(Porsev) We tried again, tried hard, this time Kirstoff set me up for the sprint but he is too strong (Kittel) and ... well we just try again tomorrow" Kristoff added "I think we are proving that we are competitive and its coming at the right time, Marcel is a great rider... not many can compete with him in those situations, so we have did well to challenge at least"

Not good to have lost so much time, but let's see if the team has better fortunes going uphill Smile.

C'est Magnifique Phillipe!

BMC's Gilbert in contention after grinding out the stage win
Yet more twists and turns in the Paris-Nice as Stage 4 went the way of BMC and their Belgian rider Phillipe Gilbert. For once Kittel (After a bright start) was kept out of the hunt as he slipped back from the lead pack, which allowed his rivals to gain a march on his lead in the GC standings.

However that should take nothing away from Gilbert who gritted his teeth to edge home in the sprint, as once again the rainy conditions took their toll on the field with major gaps appearing in the peloton.

Gilbert said "Everyone seemed to have given Argos-Shimano and Kittel a free pass to win. Today we decided that could change and the weather helped me in my effort to take the glory. Theres still a long way to go here, but im enjoying the challenge and will keep on pressing"

Thanks Cycleman, its not been a great race... but Ive enjoyed it and there has been minor improvements!

OK, hopefully this wont get too complicated.

As im running the story in calender format, ie reporting on the races as they come, we have a crossover now with the Tirreno-Adriatico starting midway through my Paris-Nice coverage.

So we will have 2 races run side by side, I hope that this dosent cause any confusion and ill try to ensure I distinguish which is which!

Omega-Pharma toppled by Sky!

A bad day for the Belgians; the favourites miss out and Lotto-Belisol are humiliated
Alex Pilsen (Lotto-Belisol Sporting Director) "Ill speak to the team principles and see what the way forward is. If that means that I tender my resignation, then ill do so. The team has not reached the standards set and with sponsorship so important, we cannot have these types of scenario continue to crop up in important races"

He continued "I think we are all embarrased by this, the riders are sat back at the team hotel wondering what happened... its not like they are new to this, we had and have seasoned professionals out there and they are paid well to perform. Today, the didnt perform and worse than that, they let the team and themselves down. Where do we go from here? I honestly dont know"

Its a nightmare - im struggling tbh and at a crossroads... I love this team and game but part of me feels im ruining it by being so bad, which in turn dosent help the story as im sure there is some expectations of the team Sad

Don't stop the story for that reason. In fact, Lotto doesn't perform so well in real life, sad enough. Just keep practicing Smile

Deja'Vous for Gilbert as he claims the Yellow Jersey after dominant win
As we get into the meat of the Paris-Nice event, once again BMC's World Champion Phillipe Gilbert proves his class to dominate a tricky Stage 5, as he earned time to put him into the Yellow Jersey for leading the GC category.

Marcel Kittel who had dominated the early part of the race, has lost his way with negligible finishes, as the big hitters on the mountains have edged themselves back into contention.

Outside of the main category its Sky Procycling who are the happiest with Ian Stannard heading up the Mountain Points table, whilst they also now hold the team standings, overtaking Omega-Pharma.

Ravenous Cavendish!
by: Cycling News

Desperate to prove himself; Mark Cavendish fires to victory for Omega-Pharma
The excitement finally arrives in the Tirreno-Adriatico as Stage 2 saw the competition really get under way after yesterdays Team Time Trials. Once again the boys from Omega-Pharma had alot to prove, even more so after failing to beat Sky in the fore mentioned event yesterday.

However the Belgian's need not have worried as once Cavendish took the tight final bend in for the sprint, he had no one near him to worry about and could celebrate his victory with his team mates.

Cavendish said "I have to thank my team mates for this, they were great and once we got into the position for a sprint, I knew it was down to my ability to get the job done. We done well and hopefully can do the same again later in the race"

For all the glory, there is the contrast of pain and for Lotto-Belisol verteran Greg Henderson it was the end as he pulled up midway through the stage following a minor fall, and gave up his position in the days race.

Dont worry about the TTT it's normal on such short races.
