Schools Cycling League - Event 1
The opening event of the SCL takes place in the south east of england. To be more precise; The Dengie Marshes in Essex. 163km face our youngsters today as they look set to battle it out over a difficult windy course including 19km of cobbles and difficult roads.
Alan Rosner(Race Organiser): ""The course is pan flat, in the ever present North Sea wind there is no shelter, this is a hard mans race, a challenge for man and machine. There is nowhere to hide. The race peloton will be lined out from Maldon and only the best riders will hit the rough sections in the front group.""
We were lucky enough to have a scout go through towards the end of last season, and as a result we're able to give you a brief run down on the top 5 favourites styles, abilities and possible weaknesses for today:
Rider | Team | Strength | Weakness | Grizliacki | Leicester | High Stamina | Suffers on any Incline | Harris | Bristol | Never Say Die | Less efficient on Cobbles | Reynolds | Manchester | Powerful Style | Poor Support | Andrews | Cumbria | Large Team | No Spirit | Miller | Birmingham | All Round Quality | Legs fade late on |
In total 80 riders are here in their District attire, we'll be back later this evening to give you a rundown of today's' events once we've seen them!

Eyed this one up as a real target. Hope we can be mixing it well towards the finish.
Slightly worried about the number of riders, potential for the no-chase-bug thing. However the cobbles should prevent that and make a for a good race, with most of the action in the final quarter, where it will be all about brute strength and timing.

The riders wait ready in Maldon for the start of our opening event
3km: We've got a lot of jostling early on as the riders re-arrange, here's hoping no one makes an early trip to the tarmac
5km: Turnbull (London) and Quilter (Leicester) make an attempt to escape the peloton. Neither are known as good cobblers so perhaps a move by teams to save some riders?
7km: 4 more riders join the duo and together they create a 1'27 gap over the peloton. Included are Wright (Plymouth), Jones (Cumbria), Banicki (Manchester) and Taylor (Cardiff). Bristol lead the peloton forward but seem happy to let this group clear
15km: Bristol seem keen to put on the hurt early and echelons are beginning to form 5minutes behind the breakaway.
33km: The breakaway continue to stretch the gap as they arrive at the days first section of cobbles. Any thought of echelons behind has dampened in the rain, as the peloton seem happier to huddle together for warmth and chatter
40km: That first section causes havoc behind and the peloton is ripped in two. None of our predictions are caught behind, but 38 riders have missed this potentially decisive split
64km: The wind seems to be affecting the break now, whove lost 5minutes in the last 15km. The peloton is one thin line, it's a matter of time before the reduced 51man group splits up
75km: Toby Stevens becomes victim #1 on the cobbles, he loses his wheel on the slippery surface, reducing the man power for Cumbria team leader Stephen Andrews
With over 80km still remaining we see the first move by a favourite. Cumbria rider Jason Daniels joins a 3 man escape group during the 3rd stretch on the cobbles. His associates are Harris of Cardiff and Gillespie of Scotland
90km: The trio have caught the morning break, with a lead now standing at 3'32. Behind Leicester lead the chase for Grizliacki, but could we have seen the decisive move only half way through?
110km: The break still lead by 3'20 with the late-to-join trio forcing the pace. Behind Birmingham and Leicester are doing most of the work to limited avail.
115km: An 18 man group manages to pull clear on the 5/8 section of cobbles, included are mostly riders from Birmingham and Leicester, the most notable absence is Carl Griffin, leader of Plymouth.
122km: The split has stuck, leaving Plymouth praying the break stays away. They've no men in the front now except for Puncher Wright.
134km: The breakaway has shrunk to just 7 riders now with their lead decreased to just over 2minutes to the chase group. The casualties are Jack Jones(Cumbria) and Peter Taylor(Cardiff)
145km: Into the final section and the peloton appear to have given up the chase. The break seems to be splitting once more with just 4 men looking to have made the cut: Daniels(CMB), Gillespie(SCO), Harris(Car) and Banicki(Man)
144km(20 to go): Seeing the break is escaping him, Birmingham leader Miller goes on the offencive, he's 1'45 behind so it'll be a tough chase, but his legs may be fresher than those out front!
18 to go: Excitement all over the place now, Banicki can't hold pace up front and the original break has been entirely dropped by the attacking trio. The official gap has reduced to 1'50 and Leicester are forcing the pace with Grizliacki, perhaps one last throw of the dice from the 16 man peloton?
15 to go: Just 4 men are still ahead of the group, but it looks like the trio of attackers are set to take the top 3 on the podium. Daniels is forcing a high pace out front, whilst behind we have strength in numbers for Bristol, Leicester and Birmingham.
13 to go: Yet more drama in what has been an enthralling race! Not content to give up hope 5 men go on the assault from the peloton. Leeds have two men in Hughes and Thompson, whilst Bristol have Harris, Birmingham: Butler, and Leicester: Matzik
7500m... The attackers couldn't maintain their assault, doing no more than to finally shut down Banicki of Manchester. The rider had been stuck between since losing touch with the break on the last section of cobbles.
With 2000m remaining the trio reach the barriers 1'21 ahead. They are in the order Gillespie, Daniels, Harris as they prepare for a sprint for the line, to become the leader of the SCL after round 1...
1300m.. Daniels launches his sprint, immediately passing Gillespie. Harris seems lost behind and struggles to keep up with the move...
1600m(G2) The sprint for 4th is also raging, with Leicester, Birmingham and Bristol fighting it out, they won't catch them, but they have smashed the gap due to the games the occurred in front!
A rain spattered Jason Daniels sprints home in style to take victory in the Maldon Dengie Junior Tour! Gillespie of Scotland is next home, holding off Harris of Cardiff who completes the podium.
It's Grizliacki ahead of Daniels' teammate Andrews to complete the top 5, whilst fellow Leicester rider Matzik can claim 6th.

Different teams do excel in different races, intentionally so, so there's no need to worry if your team had a poor race, it's likely we'll get into terrain better suited to you soon enough

I'm actually still working out what the prize funds will be, along with the cost of training camps + as a possible addition for next season; tutors
I'll let you all know what the system is soon, once I have a neat schedule sorted
