Race Report : VDK-Driagaagse de Panne-Koksijde
Stage 02
Today I was in a good shape and the stage was quite long (214 km). The coach asked me to lead the pack to protect the leader jersey of Thomas .
I led the pack during 150 km which is very exhausting. 50 km before the end I let the sprinters' team the command of the pack. I went at the back of the pack.
Sébastien Chavanel was not one of the favorites today because of the hill 10km before the line but he was well protected so he was able to sprint. Tom Veelers (Team Argos - Shimano) won the stage and Sébastien , with a perfect lead-out by Yohann Gène , ended 6th.
As I'm not a "super-hero", After all my work today I was simply out of energy. I ended in the last position today and tomorrow I will not be part of the race to recover before Ronde van Vlaanderen

- Thomas Voeckler ended 13th of the VDK-Driagaagse de Panne-Koksijde General Ranking due to a very bad performance in the last Time Trial (63th at 1'10 from the winner).
- Bryan Coquard was caught in a crash during Route Adélie de Vitré . The diagnostic is a broken wrist. He may be able to race again in end of April.
- Tomorrow is Ronde van Vlaaderen , I'm quite nervous because the sponsor, which still not renew is contract with the team, wants one of us in the Top 5. Of course Sébastien Turgot or Thomas Voeckler are able to target the top 10 but they will need the help of the whole team.
- My main goal tomorrow is to stay as long as possible with the best to protect Séb and Tom from crashes or punctures.
Well now it's time for me to rest before the big day that is tomorrow.
To all the Belgian followers and others on the side of the road during the race, See you there

Race Report :
Ronde van Vlaanderen
It was a big day for me because it was my first participation in a Monument as a pro, I was feeling quite nervous at the begging but the race was important and I could not deceive my coach.
Here we are at the start of the 97th edition of the Ronde van Vlaanderen .
The team's strategy was to have someone in front to avoid a long and exhausting chase. I wanted to go but it looked like the coach had other plans for me. Damien Gaudin went in the breakaway for the team with 8 other riders.
I've made my job for the team and at 40 km from the end, I dropped back to recover from my earlier effort.
When there was still 30 km to go, Juan Antonio Flecha (Vacansoleil - DCM Pro Cycling Team) attacked. He was immediately counter by Tom Boonen (Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team). They did not went far.
Before the last way in the Oude Kwaremont , there was a group of 11 riders in which were present Sébastien Turgot and Thomas Voeckler . Due to the gap with the group behind, the top 10 was assured.
In the Oude Kwaremont , Fabian Cancellara (RadioShack - Leopard) set the pace up, Thomas suffered of this acceleration and the group was now formed of ten riders.
In the Paterberg , again Cancellara accelerated but this time he created a gap with his opponents. Séb did not react as fast as he had to and he was alone at the back at the end of that difficulty.
Cancellara, as a great Time Trialist, finished the race alone and add a great race to his records. Séb who saved some energy managed to jump from groups to groups and he took the 6th position. The surprise came from Thomas , who was having a second breath, managed to be in the top 10.
I was in the "pack" but during the last ascension of the Paterberg I tested myself I leave them and they never saw me again. And what an amazing surprise I'm 25th. In my first participation of this race, I'm taking a beautiful 25th position!!!

I want to thanks the coach to trust me in a race like that and, I want to thank you, all the cycling's fans who were thousands on the side of the road to support us in this suffering race.
I'm going to rest now and I will be part of the team for Circuit Sarthe - Pays de la Loire at list for three days.

Flash Interview
Fabian Cancellara (1st): " I'm very happy of my win today, the team did a great job and I can only thanks them. It's not only my victory it's the victory of a long time work with my team mates, my family and myself.
Last year was a painful classics season but here I am winning again this wonderful race. "
Tom Boonen (2nd): " Fabian was the best today and I want to congratulate him for the impressive show he made. Of course I wanted to win here on my home land with the amazing support of the crowd but I was not as strong as Fabian. "
Sylvain Chavanel (3rd): " I'm quite disappointing with this 3rd position because I'm sure I could have followed Fabian. The coach asked me to wait for Tom and as a team mate I did it. I'm looking for more liberty in
Paris - Roubaix but if I have to work for Tom, I will do it without complaining. "
Sébastien Turgot (6th): " Today I was in great shape, but when Fabian accelerate in the
Paterberg , I reacted too late. My main objective today was to be in the top 10 and I only did it thanks to the work of my team mates. "
Thomas Voeckler (10th): " Lots of people say it's a surprise to see me in the 10th position, have they already forgotten that last year I was 8th?
Of course without the hills, I won't have made this result but the most important in this race is to always save some energy for later. "

Stage 01
We are here to recover from our effort from the Ronde , but a result is very welcomed.
I was felling quite good today so I went in the breakaway.
We were caught 10 km before the line. The team made a train for Sébastien Turgot .
Marcel Kittel (Team Argos - Shimano) was the best today. Séb is 7th.
As i took the maximum mountain point given today, Tomorrow I will wear this pink jersey.

Stage 04
As I planned, I was in a breakaway with 11 riders. Only tow of them were a threat to my jersey. I won the first and the second mountain sprint.
When I was sure to have the jersey, I slow down waiting for the pack to avoid spending too much energy before Paris - Roubaix .
33 riders disputed the victory including Vincent Jérôme , who took the 10th position. Bram Tankink (Blanco Pro Cycling Team) was the strongest today.
I came home with a deserved amazing jersey. I'm glad I managed to keep it until the end.

On the Cobblestones of the North
We had blocked this day to recognize some cobbled areas of Paris - Roubaix . I know well this cobbles because there are part of my training roads.
The day started on the cobblestones of la Trouée d'Arenberg . We were riding at an easy pace just to observe the road and its cobbles.
The next one we did was Mons-en-Pévèle a very difficult and long portion of cobblestones. The race can be lost here.
And after that there was le Carrefour de l'Arbre the most important cobbled area of the race. Most of the time, the race is won (or lost: poor Thor ) here. We split into 3 groups with a different pace.
The first group : Sébastien Turgot and Damien Gaudin
The second group : Alexandre Pichot , Vincent Jérôme and me
Well Vincent was quite easy so he left us
And the last one : David Veilleux , Tony Hurel and Björn Thurau .
After that we ride to Roubaix without stops and we end the day after the last cobbled section in Roubaix.
It's weird to realize that tomorrow I will be one of the 200 riders starting this race knowing that 3 years ago I went to the
Templeuve (Moulin-de-Vertain) cobbled area to support the guys I will ride with tomorrow
.
With the squad we have and the shape we are in, The team can hope for at least two in the top 10 of the race
. It might not be me because I will ride as a team mate but, perhaps I will be a surprise like
Sébastien did last year.
To everyone who will follow this race tomorrow, See you

Race Report :
Paris - Roubaix
As we say in France, "L'Enfer du Nord" is a really difficult and demanding race.
Today the rain was also of the party, the vigilance on the cobbles was very important.
Here we are the 111th edition of "Paris - Roubaix" with the sun of Compiegne.
Lots of guys tried to be in the morning breakaway but Omega Pharma - Quick·Step Cycling Team did not want anybody leaving before the first cobblestone.
160 km to go:
And here we are the first cobblestones of Paris - Roubaix . First of many (60 km of cobbled this year). The weather was starting to be quite threatening but nothing important for now.
134 km to go:
Some riders tried to leave the pack, Alexandre was one of them but again, Tom Bonnen 's team mates worked hard to abort this attack. The rain was here too.
Trouée d'Arenberg (87 km to go):
A massive amount of supporters today, Damien Gaudin took the lead of the pack to show the jersey and to avoid being caught in a crash.
74 km to go:
The bad luck fall on the team, Damien Gaudin hit a spectator and fall on the ground, he lost every single hopes he had and to conclude this, he did not end the race, he retired at 60 km from the line to go to the hospital.
69 km to go:
We are still far from the end but Fabian Cancellara is already isolated, Grégory Rast , his last team mate gave everything to help his leader but it was not easy for him. The breakaway was 5'21 earlier than us.
Mons-en-Pévèle (50 km to go):
Again Cancellara took control of the race by accelerating on this section. It's where I lost contact of the group. Alexandre Pichot came with me, our work was done. Sébastien was feeling good and Vincent was still here to protect him.
37.3 km to go:
Cancellara who was very good today launched an impressive attack. Séb knew that the race was still long and he did not counter.
Carrefour de l'Arbre (20 km to go):
With the impressive work of Sylvain Chavanel , Tom Boonen caught Spartacus . Apparently the race can be lost here but it can also bring victory.
Velodrome:
The three riders arrived together in Roubaix with a tiny advantage for Tom Boonen , who were with a Team Mate.
A second group 2'50 behind with seven riders including Sébastien arrived in the Velodrome.
And the victory is for the amazing Tom Bonnen who won a very tight sprint. Cancellara is second and Chavanel third in the same time as Boonen .
In the fight for the 4th position, Séb was the fastest.
I entered the Velodrome with Alexandre 12' after Tom Boonen .
We took the 24th and 25th position of the race.

With an average speed of 36.97 kmph for Tom Boonen , the race is definitely not the fastest one but a very destrucive one because 92 out of 200 riders arrived in the time limit. I'm glad to be one of this 92 riders but most of all I got a second top 25 in a WT cobbled race.

Tom Boonen : 1st
Journalist: Thanks Tom to answer our few questions, first, 2nd in the Ronde and 1st in Roubaix, how are you feeling right now?
Tom Boonen: Well, it's been two amazing race, but again I think that without Sylvain, who is the perfect lieutenant, I would not joined Fabian in the "Carrefour de l'Arbre". And I'm so happy to win this race again.
J: It's the 5th time that you won here, you are the only one who ever did that!
TB: I know it's sound surrealist but I don't plan to stop now, next year I will come back and I will win it again!
J: Thank you very much Tom and again congratulation for your win.
Fabian Cancellara : 2nd
"It's been an amazing race for me, I knew that Tom Boonen was in great shape and that's why I tried to attack him quite far from the line. I used too much energy and Tom still got a team mate.
When we entered the Velodrome together I thought : perhaps it's not too late, I can win it. In the end the sprint was very tight and I have no regrets about my race today"
Sylvain Chavanel : 3rd
" I won the E3, I made third in the Ronde and third in Roubaix, I don't think that my classics season was crap but again, I had to help Tom toward the victory, I spend a lot of energy to protect him while we were with Fabian and I had no chance of victory. As my contract end after this season I may change of team to be the leader in this races."
Sébastien Turgot : 4th
"Last year I was a surprise and now, I'm a confirmation. I arrived with a group where I did not took part in the chase because I knew how I was feeling and I knew that they were unreachable. In fact no one really worked to catch them, we were all saving energy thinking about a sprint between us. I also had the help of a strong team, unfortunately Damien (who fell twice during this stage) could not help me in the last 25 km."
Mark Velpois : 24th
Spoiler
yes I've been interviewed by a local newspaper
Journalist: Mark it was your first Paris - Roubaix as a pro what were your feeling during this race?
Me: I was feeling lucky to be part of this wonderful and painful race and also It was weird to see so many people supporting us as i'm used to ride this road during my training session.
J: You also took part in the Ronde but it was not planned, was it?
Me: Well I was not selected for the team in Belgium but because of a cold I could not be part of the E3 or Gent - Wevelgem. As the coach wanted to see me in two WT cobbled races, he decided to put me in the squad for the Ronde and for Roubaix.
J: How do you explain your 25th position in the Ronde and your 24th position in Roubaix?
Me: It's easy, after leaving Séb to his main lieutenants, I stay with Alex ant the back of the group to regain some energy. But the thing is that I never stop my effort as some other riders must do, so I always ended up
alone or with a team mate at the end of the day.
J: Thanks for your time and good luck for the rest of your season.
Just for your information, Damien is okay, he has no injury but just a drop of moral after his two fall.
I come back to racing at the Tro-Bro Leon in Bretagne.
See you
