tsmoha - Same, they are great And thx for the tip It'll be definitely nice to race your team.
Smowz - Agreed, I didn't have plans for having a climber, hence no HC races which is big minus. So I am relaying on him to really produce in every race he enters very much so.
It's indeed very climatic opening of the season. 12 race days is a lot indeed, and I am hoping Marquez can take points on every stage that isn't flat. We need every singly point we can get.
Miguel98 Look forward to racing against you in those races then
After talks with the management we have set the following schedule for the season ahead. It’s 88 race days across the whole year with pretty brand variety of races for me to help out my leaders and try to develop as a cyclist through this experience.
January | | | | 13/01 - 18/01 | C1 | | Tour Down Under | | | | | February | | 3/02 - 9/02 | HC | | Tour of South Africa | | | 28/2 | C1 | | GP di Lugano | | | | | March | | | | 1/3 | C1 | | Strade Bianche | 13/3 | C2 | | Nokere-Koerse | 22/03 - 24/03 | C2 | | Kwita Izina | 25/03 - 31/03 | C1 | | Tour of Taiwan | | | | | April | | | | 3/04 - 8/04 | C1 | | Tropicale Amissa Bongo | 11/4 | C2 | | Tro Bro Leon | 15/4 | HC | | Philadelphia International | 18/4 | C1 | | Giro dell'Appellenio | | | | | May | | | | 18/5 | C1 | | GP Tunis | 3/05-8/05 | HC | | Tour of the Czech Republic | | | | | June | | | | 23/06-26/06 | C1 | | Ster ZLM Tour | | | | | July | | | | 7/7 | HC | | Manx International | 9/07-11/07 | C1 | | Tour of East Java | 30/07-31/07 | C2 | | Tasol Tour to the Sun | | | | | August | | | | 1/8 | C1 | | Nelspruit Classic | 2/8 | HC | | Clasica San Sebastian | 20/08-29/08 | U23 | | Tour de l'Avenir | 31/8 | C1 | | GP Plouay | | | | | September | | | | 1/9 | C2 | | Challenges Phosphatiers | 7/09-14/09 | C1 | | Tour of Britain | | | | | October | | | | 1/10 | C1 | | Milano - Torino | 3/10 | C1 | | Paris -Tours | 5/10 | HC | | Giro dell'Emilia | 16/10-20/10 | HC | | Tour of Beijing | 23/10 | HC | | Japan Cup |
Tour Down Under is my first race of the season. I’ll have a free role to join the breaks, but Marc de Maar will be our leader I’ll do my best to help him out.
The races I look forward to most are the 5 C2 classics which should benefit me most in the road to become the best rider I can be. I hope I can achieve one or two good results here. However I think it’s easy to spot my most anticipated race here.
Tour de l'Avenir will be the race this season for me. We’ll be able to field quite a strong team here and we’ll try to challenge on all terrains. My personal goal is to achieve at least Top 10 in one of the stages, but I’ll try to do even better.
Cheers everyone, until the next blog.

Not being in the HC mountain races could turn out to be a good thing if it forced you to send Marquez to a race like Tachira. I think he could possibly start as favourite down in Venezuela, which he certainly wouldnt in any HC race given the quality of opposition!

Yep, that might be the big plus indeed. Hopefully it works out in the end
And btw, our website programmer used the wrong schedule for Ian Boswell. He's racing Tour of South Africa instead of Vuelta a Tachira, his blog post is edited accordingly.

Chris Sutton takes the first win in the Criterium series!
Another race and another win for Chris. Dominant form from the Aussie!
Lachlan Morton takes stunning victory on the hardest stage! The young Aussie showing his amazing potential in the first race of his pro career!
Another flat finish and only one winner. Chris Sutton makes it 3/3 and takes the overall crown!
Overall General Classification
| Name | Team | Points | 1 | Christopher Sutton | Risa-Ergon Cycling | 36 | 2 | Leigh Howard | Drapac Professional Cycling | 24 | 3 | Simon Clarke | Genesys Wealth Advisers | 17 | 4 | Graeme Brown | Team UniSA | 15 | 5 | Wes Sulzberger | Team Budget-Forklifts | 15 | 6 | Ricki Nelson | Team Budget-Forklifts | 13 | 7 | Lachlan Morton | Genesys Wealth Advisers | 12 | 8 | Damion Drapac | Oz Cycling Project | 11 | 9 | Tim Kennaugh | Great Britain National Team | 10 | 10 | Adam Hansen | Drapac Professional Cycling | 10 |
The Criterium Series unofficially opened the season this year. We sent two of our Aussies, Lachlan Morton & Patrick Lane to participate, but both making their debuts as pros, we didn't expect much.
We couldn't have been more wrong as Lachlan Morton got involved in a break on stage 3 and used his immense skills to power to the stage win. What a way for this young kid to make a mark and show his talent is no way overrated. Brilliant start to the season and we hope we can continue in this way when the season begins officially.

The key stage involved another break we were present. Kenny Van der Schueren proved to be one of the strongest riders in the break, but it come to fruition.
Alex Dowsett marginally defeats Efimkin to take over as the new leader of Tour Down Under!
1 | Alex Dowsett | Jaguar - Eritel | 3h27'47 | 2 | Aleksandr Efimkin | Cisco Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | Rui Costa | Team CSC-Orbea | s.t. | 4 | Matthew Lloyd | Oz Cycling Project | s.t. | 5 | Fabio Taborre | Cisco Cycling Team | s.t. | ......... | 27 | Marc De Maar | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 43 | Pieter Serry | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 2'12 | 48 | Kenny Van der Schueren | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 2'57 | 62 | Lachlan Morton | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 9'25 | 64 | Tom Van Asbroeck | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 70 | Nick Van der Lijke | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 10'13 | 145 | Ian Boswell | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 35'01 |
Another stage, another break and another HTC Nieuwsblad rider present. This time our future sprinter, Tom Van Asbroeck tries his luck, but it was always going to be a day for the best sprinters.
Joy for Aussie fans as Mitch Docker becomes the first Aussie this year to grab a stage! Dowsett defends and wins the overall GC here.

Tour Down Under proved to be a hard race for the HTC Nieuwsblad. It was a good start to the season overall as the team attacked plenty, and we were visible on most stages. However none of the attacks proved to be beneficial at the end. Marc De Maar was very unlucky to loose his GC chance on stage 2, and from then we really lost a candidate for GC.
Our very young squad here did well enough however, we didn't expect result with such inexperienced number of riders, who will surely that massive experience from here. Onwards to Tachira where we definitely hope for much more success!

And here we are in Venezuela, ready for arguably the premier pure-climber stage race of the season. The course starts off with 4 pan-flat stages which will reward the large number of decent sprinters who have made the trip to South America. Stage 5 brings a medium mountain stage with some relatively light hills before a kick up to end the stage. Stage 6 looks ideal for a breakaway and indeed the rolling medium mountain of stage 7 does as well. Stage 8 may be too hard for most breakaway specialists, though no doubt some will have lost time by this point, but with two hard mountains it is hard to see the race being sedate.
Finally stage 9 brings us to the really key stages. The final climb is long and hard but with a small downhill section to the finish line there is a chance that things could come back together up front. Stage 10 will offer no such relief for the weaker climbers with a steep finish to the end. Stage 11 just gets tougher with the roughest climb of the course finishing off this stint in the mountains. But GC contenders will not rest easily as the hilly course finishes off here on stage 12 – this is where Alarcon won the race last year.
51 | Marquez | Florentino | 52 | Barbin | Enrico | 53 | Berard | Julien | 54 | Goos | Marc | 55 | Lane | Patrick | 56 | Morton | Lachlan | 57 | Van der Schueren | Kenny |
Nieuwsblad are lead by 2010 race winner Marquez and he will come here as the top favourite. He will be tough to shake in the mountains and should be capable of managing the hills okay. The problem may be that his squad is called on to do a lot of chasing and only Berard looks up to the rigours of multiple days in the mountains at the head of the peloton. Still, Marquez could well be capable of doing this alone.

We came as big favourites here with Marquez and with no sprinters in the team, our task was to protect Marquez as well as possibly, avoid any splits or crashes and survive those first 4 flat stages. And we've done this immaculately. Marquez was never in trouble.
Now we come into the important part of the race. All the next stages will be vital for our team and we have to keep strong. Stage win is definitely a target in the next days, however we won't be happy if Marquez doesn't win GC here. It's this race that really determines our season a lot, with 12 race days gone from our lead signing.

We're not done yet celebrating Marquez's fine victory at Vuelta al Tachira, but new races are coming up fast. Here's a preview of all the of them. To check all our results so far, check the first page, which was updated yesterday.
3/02 - 9/02: Tour of South Africa
| Armee Sander | Free role | | Van der Lijke Nick | Free role | | Serry Pieter | Free role | | Morton Lachlan | Free role | | Goos Marc | Free role | | Boswell Ian | Free role | | Barbin Enrico | Free role | | Van Asbroeck Tom | Free role |
Yep, this shows you we don't really have big expectations for this race in such a tough field. We don't have a rider that will challenge the best in either hills or sprints, so we can hope for our riders to infiltrate plenty of breaks, challenge for the King of Mountain point, and maybe get lucky and fight for a stage win from a break. Anything above 1 point scored here will be a good result.
14/2: Bahir Dar
| Baugnies Jérôme | Leader | | De Haes Kenny | Deluxe Domestique | | Armee Sander | Domestique | | Vanbilsen Kenneth | Domestique | | Van der Ginst Dries | Domestique | | Vandenbergh Stijn | Domestique | | Kusters Yvo | Domestique |
Ahh, the pleasant sight of cobbles. The sight that excites us more than any other terrain we can face in cycling. It's our first goal of the season, and possibly our easiest one. We aim to get Top 5 here, but really we are targeting a podium or even a win. This will be the first race we'll face against Team Bpost and other cobblers and it will surely be very exciting one.
I think it's fair to say this is the Paris Roubaix of Pro Continental division. There'll be plenty of cobbles, very long distance an uphill finish. All those factors favour Bagunies so we hope he can deliver.
28/02: GP di Lugano
| De Maar Marc | Leader | | Van der Lijke Nick | Free Role | | Armee Sander | Free Role | | Boswell Ian | Domestique | | De Haes Kenny | Domestique | | Vandenbergh Stijn | Domestique | | Goos Marc | Domestique |
We are cautiously optimistic for GP di Lugano. We have two cards to play here, if the race is not hard enough, Lijke should be good enough to sprint if it came to reduced bunch sprint, De Maar has also tidy sprint on him. We hope to get involved in the break and then go from there.
28/02: Gisborne GP
| Berard Julien | Free Role | | Morton Lachlan | Free Role | | Kusters Yvo | Free Role | | Serry Pieter | Free Role | | Van der Schueren Kenny | Free Role | | Barbin Enrico | Free Role | | Lane Patrick | Free Role |
We don't expect much from here, it's probably a weakest side we have put in the whole year. However classics are quite unpredictable so we hope one of our riders gets into a break and we'll go from there.

It will be interesting to see how Bahir Dar plays out. I imagine that the winner will arrive solo and thus the uphill finish won't make much difference. Good luck, it would be remarkable if you weren't in the top 5.

Nick Van Der Lijke storms to stage win on stage 4 in S. Africa
Nick takes very surprising win in the .HC stage !
1 | Nick Van der Lijke | HTC Nieuwsblad | 3h58'39 | 2 | Nolan Hoffman | Metinvest-Emirates | s.t. | 3 | Aleksandar Flügel | VolksWagen-Mapei | s.t. | 4 | Grega Bole | Pivovarna Lasko Cycling Team | s.t. | 5 | Marko Kump | Pivovarna Lasko Cycling Team | s.t. |
Coming to stage 4 we had small hopes of a good result such as Top 5, with the stage suiting Nick very much so, however for one we did not expect this. Great result for Nick in his only 2nd race, he already showed great signs at Tour Down Under and went from strength to strength here. We are absolutely thrilled! We came here with no expectations, and we'll definitely leave quite happy. Now we hope our other young talent, Ian Boswell tries to fight for the King of Mountain Jersey as well.

Nice to see that Van der Lijke can already score victories. I guess I won't see that from Kreder any time soon

@ alexkr00 & jt1109 - Well, tbh Lijke might be the rider to save us from relegation if he can score those surprise good results through other races this season. Definitely we have great rider in him
Baugnies achieves HTC's first goal of the season
Baugnies in his first - of many attacks in the race!
It was obvious that the many attacks had a big effect on him in the final part of the race, but he still was able to get 5th by smallest of margins and secure our first goal of the season!
1 | Pieter Vanspeybrouck | Team BPost | 4h26'03 | 2 | Marcel Sieberg | VolksWagen-Mapei | s.t. | 3 | Nikolas Maes | Allianz-BMW Cycling Team | s.t. | 4 | Bernhard Eisel | AMEX Pro Cycling | s.t. | 5 | Jérôme Baugnies | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | ... | 14 | Kenneth Vanbilsen | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 9'56 | 15 | Kenny De Haes | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 24 | Stijn Vandenbergh | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 44 | Dries Van der Ginst | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 63 | Yvo Kusters | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 11'16 | 6 | Sander Armee | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 18'06 |
Let's start off with plenty of positives. We achieved our first goal, achieved our first Tour of Africa Points as well. Baugnies attacked like hell and definitely was unlucky for not one of his attacks to stick. We did hope to score few more points here, but it wasn't a bad first classic of the year for us. Baugnies will now concentrate on E3 and 5 Jours de Dunkerque which are his biggest goals for the season.
Our young cobble star in Vanbilsen had a perfect start to his cobbled classics experience finishing on 15th. Overall it was a good race, but we'll hope for better yet to come.

Tour of South Africa
Tour of South Africa didn't play to our team strengths, we definitely do lack a class puncheur this season, however with two particular riders getting in between the action, we have scored some important points towards the rankings. Nick Van Der Lijke was definitely our stand-out with his 5th place on stage 3 and his win on stage 4. The young Dutchman showed some class and we hope he'll continue this way through the rest of the season.
Ian Boswell was our 2nd protagonist in South Africa. He attacked plenty of times during the race and has been rewarded so with his 2nd place in the King of Mountains standings, which for such young rider is quite a good achievement. He'll definitely have plenty to talk about in his blog, coming at the end of this month.
We walk out from this race with 72 points more. Not a lot, however much more than we first expected considering our line-up hence overall I think we have to be quite happy with the result, considering some relation candidates scored far less here too.
Nick Van Der Lijke win on stage 4 was the highlight of our tour in Africa

After Marquez's win you can afford a bit of a breather. A nice breakaway win in a HC race keeps the HTC points flowing.
A decent enough cobbled opener though it already looks like Vanspreybrouck is going to be really hard to beat. Looks as though Baugnies is going with the many attacks policy, fingers crossed others do not profit from this!

Breakaway win Smowz? If I remember the win was in a bunch sprint. |

Yep, Marquez victory was crucial. Actually as Miguel says that win came from a bunch sprint, hence even more impressive I think
I am not going to jump to conclusion after Bahir Dar about the cobbles, Vanspreybrouck and Bpost are the team to beat as you say though, but I hope Baugnies will settle down in the next races bit more

Gisborne GP
Patrick Lane confirmed we were actually in the race after all!
Francesco Ginanni took great victory at the end!
1 | Francesco Ginanni | Vespa-Aprilia Racing | 5h52'42 | 2 | Aleksandr Efimkin | Cisco Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | Chris Froome | Jaguar - Eritel | s.t. | 4 | Tommy Zaini | Meiji - Cannondale | + 38 | 5 | Nicolas Roche | ING Cycling - Project | s.t. |
Well, no many words need for our performance here. We expected no good result from here and it was no surprise to see this prediction come correct.
GP di Lugano
Sander Armee and Marc de Maar take surprising 7th and 11th in the end!
1 | Aleksandar Flügel | VolksWagen-Mapei | 5h03'36 | 2 | Jonathan Bellis | Rothaus - Aegon | + 41 | 3 | Aleksandr Kolobnev | Tinkoff Bank - Rosneft OJSC | s.t. | 4 | Guillaume Levarlet | Bouygues Telecom | s.t. | 5 | Jose Mendes | Prio - Porto | s.t. | ... | 7 | Sander Armee | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 1'37 | 11 | Marc De Maar | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. |
Meanwhile we didn't have strongest squad in Gisborne, our leader in punchy races, Marc de Maar lead our team and delivered a great performance in tough looking field finishing on 11th. However Armee caused biggest surprise by finishing 2nd in the bunch sprint, awesome finish and we hope he can continue in the same fashion in races to come.

Strade Bianche
Maar was the first to attack in the group that'd make it to the end!
Maar was caught out in latter part, but he salvaged 4th at the end in a great ride by the Dutchman.
1 | Jonathan Bellis | Rothaus - Aegon | 4h58'03 | 2 | Ben Hermans | Swedbank-PEAB | s.t. | 3 | Michiel Elijzen | Team UPC - Boehringer-Ingelheim | + 26 | 4 | Marc De Maar | HTC Nieuwsblad | + 58 | 5 | Nolan Hoffman | Metinvest-Emirates | + 1'22 | ... | 11 | Nick Van der Lijke | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 13 | Jérôme Baugnies | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 26 | Pieter Serry | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 30 | Sander Armee | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 35 | Ian Boswell | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. | 89 | Kenny De Haes | HTC Nieuwsblad | s.t. |
It was a great effort by the whole team on the gravel roads as seen by the overall result. Marc was our stand out result, but Lijke scored another points here and Baugnies is continuing fine preparation to the big classics. A fine day in the Italy
