I think he's better safe than sorry. He will most likely quit in the Pyrenees, by if he decides against it, he doesn't want to have no chance for green because he didn't try earlier.

My observation there was that Greenedge got their leadout pretty much perfect. I don't think the teams knew the sprint exactly, the line came pretty fast for Goss, but Cavendish didn't look like he had the beating of him by any means.
Greipel was way out of position as usual, though perhaps looks the fastest. Sagan was a bit disappointing there, he could struggle to podium in the flat sprints, in fact he could perhaps of 'peaked too soon'

More likely that he went up there to pick up a few points, while still looking to save as much energy as possible for the finish today.

Kittel obviously not even thinking about green. He only seems to go for a stage win or did anyone see him? |

Cavendish will stay in Tour if he's in contention for Green over 1.5 weeks. If he will not, he will leave basically.
"You never know what can happen over the course of three weeks and he didn't need to use up too much energy to contest the sprint, so it was worth going for it," Yates answered from the car

He's probably not going to finish the race - he'll struggle a lot on the mountain stages. So no point trying for Green!

Anyone who thinks there will be mass crashes like in the first stage last year?

I hope not. I don't want another Tour with half of the main contenders crashing out.

It will be surely very nervous, hopefully without falls.

Hopefully not. The roads used aren't as ridiculous as last year's ones.

An easy stage that ends in an uphill sprint with narrow roads, if there are no crashes it'll be almost a miracle.

Plus cobbles and not so good roads with lot of twists.

It's not like any GC contenders had to quit because of it. But the fuss about the 3km rule and Contador losing time made it quite interesting.

What the heck are Sky and Renshaw wearing on their heads? Yellow helmets? Yuck. I get they lead the team rankings but none of them wear yellow.
But seriously what was Renshaw wearing, looked like a tt helmet.
