April 17, 2012 - Vuelta a Castilla y Leon Stage 5
Race Preview
Ian: "The final stage is the easiest of the road stages and will almost certainly end in a bunch sprint. Nerves could kick in near the end as people try to stay near the front though, so crashes could be an issue."
Ian: "Again, we have no real chance of winning today but Mandri will give it a go. Therefore, we will try to get someone in the breakaway, whilst the rest of the team will be looking after me."
Ian: "I've had a good week here. Really difficult, but good, and I need to make sure I finish it off by staying out of trouble and finishing in the bunch today."
Race Report
On a miserable, grey day, a massive group of fourteen riders went up the road, including Jonny McEvoy. Being from the North-West, the weather was not a problem for JMac!
With 20km to go, the group was still working really well together but the peloton were coming. A brave (stupid) attack by Delfosse was the final straw for the breakaway and the mass sprint was inevitable.
And there were no prizes for guessing who was the strongest today as AG2R dominated it again. Ravard took an easy win ahead of team mate Goddaert, while Mandri was pleased with sixth. Bibby finished 19th to ensure a top ten finish.

"Well that was a very valuable race for me. When you pick up a top ten in a warm-up race, you know it's going well. Hopefully, I'll be able to keep my form until next week now for Asturias. Great ride by the team who looked after me well and well done to Rene who got a solid result today. Speak soon."

April 24, 2012 - Vuelta a la Rioja
Race Preview
Ian: "A tough Spanish race over 200km in length. There is one big climb followed by two short but steep climbs near the end which will definitely split the potential winners from the also-rans."
Ian: "Our leader here is JTL in his first race in Spain but Camano will be free to ride for himself. Tennant is in top shape and will hopefullybe able to get into the breakaway and see what happens from there."
Ian: "I am just a team mate here as I don't really like the hills and I don't possess the stamina to challenge in these longer races. However, if I do make it to the end, my strong sprint may benefit me."

Race Report
As the eleven man breakaway reached the highest point of the race, snow was falling! Not what you would expect in Spain. Tennant made it into the group and looked good as he caused a few riders to lose contact at the top.
With the peloton catching the break, Tennant went for it on his own and raised the tempo until nobody could follow. Champion was the last one to let go of his wheel. All Andy could do now was keep pedalling as fast as he could with 30km still to go.
Unfortunately, as the pace went up on the final climb, our guys just couldn't hang on and Bibby and Fleeman had to try to pace JTL and Camano back to the group of favourites. It would prove impossible.
Up at the front Tennant was caught by Cesar Veloso and Kroon, and soon, Scheirlinckx. He tried to hang on but he was absolutely cooked and had to let the favourites go. Five more riders caught and dropped Tennant.
Eventually, with it becoming apparent that we weren't going to bring back the leaders, Tiernan-Locke went solo to try to gain as many places as possible. Navarro and Sanchez Pimienta were the only riders between him and Tennant.
But at the front, Saxo Bank's Karsten Kroon outsprinted Cesar Veloso and Marcos Garcia to take the victory. Tennant held on for a magnificent ninth with JTL in eleventh behind Navarro. Camano, Bibby and Fleeman all scored top twenty finishes.

"That was a decent day but it could have been much better had JTL just held on to that front group over the final climb. A great effort by Andy Tennant did at least make sure we got a top ten, but we had five riders in the second group on the road which was so frustrating as we just couldn't bring the lead group back. I'm very happy with my performance in a race where I wouldn't usually excel but I gave it everything to try to catch the leaders and was still able to sprint to 15th. Have to be satisfied with that."

Wow! Thanks a lot Avin. Hopefully I can continue it and make it even better . I love reading the Dominik Nerz story so I thought I'd give it a go myself. Not quite as good as that yet though.
@sutty, more than I was aiming for at the start of the race, that's for sure. Got to be happy with that!

Ian's Blog
April 26, 2012
Well, it's been a while since my last blog, and for good reason.
I have had a busy April despite missing one scheduled race in France, and it's been a very successful month for me. I managed to get a great result in Castilla y Leon just because I got in the right breakaway. It was a massive surprise but obviously, very welcome. I am just entering the first peak of my season with the Vuelta Asturias where I hope to perform well, especially in the time trial. I won't be the team leader but more of a luxury team mate. It's my last race in Europe until June so I want to give it everything I can.
I am writing this in Oviedo, Asturias as we prepare for the first stage tomorrow. The rest of the team here is very similar to the team in Castilla y Leon but JTL is in for Mandri, who is racing in Turkey at the moment, and Partridge replaces Faiers, who has finished the first part of his season. This means I get to room with JMac again. Every. Single. Race. (He's alright really ). There are two really tough uphill finishes here as well as a time trial and the other two stages aren't exactly pan-flat either, so this is going to be a really hectic race. Especially when you consider that Lampre have brought almost their strongest team to support Scarponi. Movistar are also very strong in support of Intxausti and teams like Caja Rural and Saur Sojasun will make the race very difficult aswell.
We're gonna need some luck. And ice baths...

Loving the story so far. Great team choice, it isn't too weak nor too strong.
Good luck in Asturias.

April 27, 2012 - Vuelta Asturias Stage 1
Race Preview
Ian: "The first stage looks good for a breakaway with a tough climb near the end but it could also end in a sprint amongst the punchers. It certainly won't be easy though, that's for sure."
Ian: "Our leadership is shared between Camano and Tiernan-Locke here. Today, the plan is to sit in the peloton and wait and see what happens. We have no real sprinter if it did come down to a bunch kick."
Ian: "Today is not for me as I don't really like these hills. I'm aiming for stages to come but I really want to finish in the main group today, whatever that may be. If it came to a sprint, I would be given the chance to go for the win."

Ian: "Lampre and Movistar have the squads to dominate this race if they want to. Coppel, Cesar Veloso, Efimkin and Marcos Garcia should be ones to watch aswell."
Race Report
Today's break was very small, with just three riders chancing their arm. They were Sergio Sousa (Efapel), Ricardo Mestre (Carmim - Prio) and Illart Zuazubiskar (Orbea). The young Basque rider would have his hands full keeping up with the Portuguese men.
With the first categorised climb out of the way, Guillaume Levarlet went solo and bridged the three minute gap in impressive time. The Saur Sojasun rider had ample opportunity to enjoy the stunning views over the Bay of Biscay.
Not long after the Frenchman went, Landbouwkrediet's leader Bert De Waele went on the attack. He also bridged the gap to the now-three man group, as Zuazubiskar dropped back.
As they crested the final climb, with Sousa long gone and with Mestre just losing contact at the very top, De Waele and Levarlet begun the descent to the finish. The gap to the peloton was easily big enough and these two would fight for the stage win.
De Waele was forced to lead the sprint out and Levarlet easily came around him to take the victory and the first leader's jersey of the race. Mestre just held off the much-reduced peloton for third ahead of team mate Marque Porto.
With Camano and Tiernan-Locke comfortably in the main bunch, Bibby didn't need to worry about where he finished. However, the Englishman was committed to the end as he charged in to limit his losses. Ian lost about one and a half minutes today.

" I'm so annoyed today!! I was the last rider to get dropped on that final climb but it was unnecessary. I wasn't completely out of energy and if I'd have given it everything I could have stayed in that group and not lost any silly time. As it is, I'll have to revert to working for the two leaders now although I'm still aiming for the time trial tomorrow and the mountain stage after that. I don't mind working for the team of course, but I was hoping for a good individual result here. Let's see what the rest of the week has in store for me."

Race Preview
Ian: "A 14km time trial which is undulating rather than hilly. The time gaps won't be huge, but they won't be insignificant either. Poor time triallists could lose well over a minute on the top guys."
Ian: "Our best bet will again be Andy Tennant and he will be going for a top ten but hopefully even better. Camano will need a good run today to give him a shot of a good overall result, while JTL needs to limit his losses. This is not a good stage for him."
Ian: "The plan for me is a top fifteen again but I wouldn't mind a top ten! There are some people in great form here, particularly amongst the Spaniards and Portuguese, and with me being just off my best, it will be a struggle to get a top ten."
Race Report
The early benchmark was set by Ovechkin of RusVelo, who had of course won the TT in Castilla y Leon. His time of 21'08 would not be good enough for him to win here though.
Infact it was only the best time for four minutes as American TT specialist Steven Cozza of Team NetApp beat him by just one second. Other good early times were set by Poux, Dietziker and Eichler, but these would fall way down the order by the end of the day.
Andrew Tennant was on fire, and even he was shocked as he crossed the line a whole three seconds ahead of Cozza. Could anyone beat his time of 21'04? Whether or not they would, that was a magnificent effort by Andy.
Movistar had a nightmare yesterday with only Arroyo finishing in the lead group despite bringing a very strong team. Karpets is their best time triallist but even he couldn't beat Tennant, missing out by two seconds.
Ian Bibby was hoping to make up for yesterday's time loss and he went out quickly, possibly too quickly, as he faded in the second half of the course to post a time thirteen seconds slower than Tennant. A top fifteen would be unlikely now.
Not far behind Bibby was Camano, and he only managed a time three seconds quicker than Bibby to go a provisional seventh. With so many top riders to come, he wouldn't finish in the top ten today.
Lampre started this race with Scarponi as leader but Niemiec looks stronger at the moment. He flew round the course but still couldn't beat Tennant, being a matter of milliseconds slower than the Brit. In the distance, JTL was out on course, but as expected, he lost nearly thirty seconds to Niemiec and Tennant today.
Oh. My. God. Here's the star of today's show, Gustavo Cesar Veloso. The Spaniard annihilated Tennant's time by 26 seconds to ensure a stunning victory for Andalucia. Nobody could quite believe the time and, indeed, Tennant was laughing about it.
There was still time for the Portuguese to have their say as first Hugo Sabido became only the second person to duck under 21'00, just, with a 20'59, to take second place for the LA-Antarte team.
And then Alejandro Marque Porto of Carmim-Prio went third, knocking Tennant off the podium by one second! How unlucky for the young Endura rider. Meanwhile, in the battle for yellow, Levarlet just held off De Waele by two seconds.

"Seventeenth. Not too bad but just off what I was hoping for today. Never mind, this race isn't really about me now, it's about Camano, who was brilliant today by the way, and JTL. I'm gonna make a bold prediction now . Nobody is going to beat Cesar Veloso here, nobody, not unless Scarponi finds some form! He's on fire and he obliterated everyone today. Another fantastic ride by Tennant though and he deserved better than fourth, he's seriously talented."

Race Preview
Ian: "The Queen Stage of the race is an incredibly difficult test that will absolutely destroy the non-climbers. The gaps will really open up on the final two climbs, which are both very steep."
Ian: "Well, today is the day of reckoning for JTL and Camano. The important thing is that one of them gets a good result, so whoever is best on the day will get the support of the other. It will be tough though."
Ian: "I am the luxury team mate today, not having to do any work for the leaders until I'm the only one left. When that final climb comes though, I won't last long, it is very steep indeed!"
Race Report
At the start of the stage, loads of weaker riders were trying to form a breakaway. They must have been sadists because at nearly 200km, it's unlikely that any of them would have survived out front all day. All fifteen riders were soon brought back.
In the end, it was just two riders who made it away. David Belda of Burgos was followed by Raymond Kunzli of Spidertech. Neither of them were dangerous and they are only average climbers.
But soon, Julien El Fares of Team Type 1 was off after them and bridged easily. The Frenchman is a very good rider but was still no danger, which meant nobody in the peloton reacted and it settled down in the bunch.
As the main bunch hit the summit of the penultimate climb, twelve riders had pulled away from the others. The breakaway had been caught so this group was now at the front. All of the big names were in there, including Scarponi, Niemiec and Cesar Veloso.
On the descent, the second group was being led by Ian Bibby as he tried to get team mates Camano and Tiernan-Locke back to the lead group. The yellow jersey group soon caught up with this group and drove it on. Levarlet's team mate, Coppel, doing most of the work.
But as soon as they hit the final climb, Cesar Veloso attacked and was soon caught and passed by Niemiec, who has looked strong all week. This meant that the riders in the second group couldn't get back. Tiernan-Locke was the only rider battling back to the front group but had to do it solo.
Przemyslaw Niemiec was just as unbeatable today as Veloso was yesterday, easily beating the Andalucia rider to take the yellow jersey. In the background, his team mate Scarponi was powering to third ahead of Marcos Garcia and David Arroyo. As expected the gaps were huge.
Tiernan-Locke rode superbly to catch the back of the front group and finish eleventh, just being outsprinted by Firsanov of RusVelo. He lost four minutes today but a good GC result is still on. Camano came home a distant 21st, with Bibby fading fast to 31st.

"That hurt a lot. The stage was just one climb too long for me and I don't think it's fair for the riders having to go that far and then having a 14% climb at the end. The stage should have finished at the top of the penultimate climb really but I can't do anything about it. Well done Jon, another superb ride as he was the only one in that second group good enough to ride up to the first group. It's a shame that Iker and myself couldn't help him more but we were both burned out before that climb even started. Never mind, we got taught a lesson today by the big boys but we'll come back fighting over the next two days. If I can get out of bed in the morning..."

Please no Sky!
It'd be more interesting to see Ian in Garmin!

I didn't have the time to intensively read this in the past days, but I skimmed through it and it looks really nice so far. Style, reports, rider choice, results - everything is going very nicely. Keep it up!
