Italy's team is confirmed then!
And after all the early votes for the likes of Nibali, Ascani, Sestili, Corioni and Napolitano, a stronger team eventually pulled through - and its full support for Bennati.
Danielle Bennati
Filippo Pozzato (TT)
Alessandro Ballan
Diego Ulissi
Enrico Gasparotto
Damiano Cunego (TT)
For Germany, 9 selectors voted for 22 different riders. Fielder lost out to Kittel in the pure TTer position battle, and Burghardt was also just short, as a mix of sprinters and puncheurs makes up the team.
Heinrich Haussler
Stefan Schumacher (TT)
Marcel Kittel (TT)
Gerard Ciolek
Patrik Sinkewitz
Fabian Wegmann
Over in Belgium, Steegmans and Cornu were the most popular riders - but Boonen and Bakelants are likely to be the leaders of the team. We could see a very strong sprint train of Van Stayen, Roelandts and Boonen at the finish - after Van Stayen defeated Gilbert in a second round of voting to secure the 6th spot.
Gert Steegmans
Dominique Cornu (TT)
Tom Boonen (TT)
Jan Bakelants
Jurgen Roelandts
Michael Van Stayen
I know theres other nations Ive not posted their squads, but the startlist will be fully confirmed soon - all that remains is the second round of French voting to deteremine their 6th rider.

Flügel missed out for Germany He will take his revenge when he is a 80 hill rider next year! I didn't vote for Ciolek, doubt he will survive the course

Was expecting Ricco to not make it, so doesn't really matter. Had the same Italian selection anyways (with Ricco in for Ullisi).
Really surprised to see Boonen, as i deliberately didn't nominate him because his manager hasn't been active in 8 months ...
I had Gilbert nominated instead of Boonen.

I nominated Ricco aswell, for 2 reasons: 1) He won the Giro 2) He was let out of an Italian team he could've lead in the WC last year.
Then again, Cunego>Ricco and it was Cunego I didn't select :-p

Good to see Haussler and Wegmann in the German squad. They have to make it a hard race to drop pure sprinters, but i can´t see a way they beat the Italians.

The German squad is similar to my vote.
Must admit that I forgot Flügel. Would have liked to see his attacking style instead of Sinkewitz.

If Pozzato wins I am going to hunt down all of the Italian selectors and force them to pay his wage next season His wage is around 800,000 as it is, I can't imagine what it would be should he win a big race...

Hehe, then I'll have to take him on, for next season aswell :-)
Nice to see him, and Ulissi in the race.

Well, I had Danielle Bennati and Pozzato to lead the Italian team with Cunego in there too. Didn't pick any of the others though.
I reckon as TT's are so predictable - why not save time and only let riders with 80+ in TT stat ride them? |

I forgot about Haussler when making my selection, glad he made it into the team, important in helping Kittel get over the hills but will also have a chance for himself.

You know that Kittel is nothing like in real life here? He's a pure TT specialist

I am very surprised that Ciolek is so far the only Bianchi rider in the olympics, I voted for Mohs as the sprinter for the german team as their stats are very much the same but Mohs much better at sprinting
