Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 5

March 12, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/Profile.jpg

The only classified mountain stage for this years version, meaning Andy Schleck has to make his move today. Cunego wil also try to hold off Nieve and Pozzato for his leaders jersey.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/1.jpg

The other interesting competition available today is the KoM. And current leader Lars Ytting Bak is working hard to be in the breakaway.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/2.jpg

The peloton has other plans through, 30kms into the stage everyone is brought back. Lampre is making a point they aren't letting a 20 man breakaway go.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/3.jpg

Eventually a group does get free, and Bak is one of them. Daniel Martin decides against joining them.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/4.jpg

As we approach the major climb of the day a few brave puncheurs try to get away, including Sylvain Chavanel and Maxime Monfort.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/5.jpg

At the sprint point at the foot of the climb the breakaway holds a lead of just 4 minutes.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/6.jpg

EA-Sony isn't messing around, Kessiakoff and Martin attack.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/7.jpg

They are working great together and are now closing in on the Chavanel group, having easily broke away from the peloton.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/8.jpg

However it is two breakaway men of Morris Possoni and Giampaolo Cheula that lead everyone over top.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/9.jpg

And surprisingly no moves from any of the favourites.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/10.jpg

Until Andy Schleck tries a sneaky attack, Lofkvist is all over it.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/11.jpg

However as we reach the next KoM climb Lampre pulls them back.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/12.jpg

20kms to go, Morris Possoni and Maxime Monfort are leading the way.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/13.jpg

In between the leaders and the peloton can be found Martin and Kessiakoff.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/14.jpg

It only takes till the final sprint point before we finally have everyone up front in one group. Key names missing from the group are 3rd in GC Filippo Pozzato and 6th in GC Cancellara.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/15.jpg

With Lampre pulling back everything heading into the final climb we find out Andy Schleck saved some room for one last burst.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/16.jpg

To no advail, we will go to an elite bunch sprint. Lofkvist is the last EA-Sony man in the front group.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/17.jpg

Jurgen Van den Broeck leads the way to the line, Lofkvist is fading but is just glad he will get the same time as everyone else.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%205/18.jpg

And its Cunego that gets around Van den Broeck in the last 50 meters to repay the hard work put in by Lampre today. Lofkvist moves up two spots into 5th overall, +1'25". Two stages to go.

Interview - Daniel Martin

Q: What were the team tatics today?
A: Exactly how the race worked out. Except me and Fredrik couldn't catch the breakaway in time to pick up the mountain points, but no harm done in that as Bak didn't get any either. And Lofkvist did a great job hanging with the pure climbers. Giving him a chance now to even crack the top 3, with a hilly stage and a ITT left.

Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 6

March 13, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/Profile.jpg

The hills are back for one last challenge before the race against the clock tomorrow. Cunego pretty much has a wrap on 1st overall, but with a good ride Lofkvist could position himself to jump
into the top 3 with the time trial on stage 7.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/1.jpg

GC might not be decided today, but the KoM competition will be.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/2.jpg

Daniel Martin does his jump and gets in the breakaway,
KoM leader Bak on the other hand does not.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/3.jpg

And the Irishman easily takes the first climb, and now is tied with Bak and Morris Possoni at 10 points. 1 KoM climb left,
plus points are going to be handed out at the finish as well.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/4.jpg

The breakaway is still free as we come up to the next KoM climb. Martin just needs to cross the line in the first three spots to win the competition.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/5.jpg

4th ... by a few inches! So now his only hope is to pick up points at the finish, or else him and Bak and Possoni share the jersey.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/6.jpg

We are now under 20kms to go, Cunego decides to attack.
Everyone lets him go. Probably not the best idea.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/7.jpg

10kms to go, Francesco Masciarelli attacks out of the breakaway. Cunego catches Martin and the rest of the breakaway at the same time.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/8.jpg

Kessiakoff finally takes some action and starts pulling Cunego back for Lofkvist, Martin is trying to plead his case to let the breakaway make it the finish. Sorry, Daniel but GC and more important than KoM.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/9.jpg

Andy Schleck attacks once Martin and his fellow breakaway men are pulled back.Lofkvist tries to counter, Cunego is still up the road leading the race.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/10.jpg

When Schleck and Lofkvist are pulled back by Movistar,
the Swed kicks again. Cunego is get clicking off the kilometers up front.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/11.jpg

They just couldn't pull him back,
Damiano Cunego delights the home crowd with a great win.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/12.jpg

2nd places goes to a breakaway man that everyone misplaced, Oscar Gatto. Raphael Delobel tries to fool the race organizers by coming arcoss in 2nd, but his trick doesn't work and he still has a lap to go.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%206/13.jpg

But Lofkvist does make sure a EA-Sony rider finish 3rd though. A nice result becomes even better when he gets a 11 second time gap to Schleck, Nieve, and Vino. And a few of you may be wondering what happen with the KoM competition? Well, with the points at the finish Cunego steals the jersey finishing with 11 points.

Interview - Thomas Löfkvist

Q: What is the possibility you jump into the top 3 in GC on the ITT tomorrow?
A: I would say 50%, the length of the route is just 9kms. So I know I can post times faster than the three men ahead of me, its just can't I make the gap larger enough.

Third place is nice there, well done! It would have been a perfect day if Martin grabbed the KoM, but still very nice. How is Vino's TT stat compared to Löfkvist?

They are both 76, but Löfkvist is clearly in better form after watching Vino in the last few stages. Schleck is 72, and Nieve is an over whelming 62

Geez, then Cunego has to watch out for Nieve! I fear that more than fourth place won't be possible for you... 9 kms should be too less to overtake Schleck. Although, thinking about it, you might be able to take one minute from Nieve...

Tirreno-Adriatico - Stage 7

March 14, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%207/Profile.jpg

Today is really divided into two parts, 1. Battle for the Stage 2. Battle for GC. Larsson will take on Cancellara for the stage,
and teammate Lofkvist is looking to jump some spots in GC.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%207/1.jpg

Larsson isn't in top form here early in the season
but does post the time to beat at 12'16''.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%207/2.jpg

Cancellara takes some revenge out on Larsson after taking his Rainbow jersey, coming at 12'02''.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%207/3.jpg

Can't forget this guy however, Iván Gutiérrez who actaully beat Fabian earlier in the year. But it looks like his form has ran out,
he is 22 seconds slower than Cancellara.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%207/4.jpg

Cancellara takes part 1. On to part 2, Lofkvist is out of course.
Setting his mark at 12'18''.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%207/5.jpg

Vino stops the clock 2 seconds slower! They are tied for 4th overall,
we will have to wait and see how the organizers handle that ...

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%207/6.jpg

Nieve and Schleck lose chuncks of time ...
but not enough for them to lose their positions.
Andy being the closest, just 4 seconds in front of Lofkvist and Vino.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Tirreno-Adriatico/Stage%207/7.jpg

And then their was Cunego. He was no problems in comes in at 12'39''.
And wins Tirreno-Adriatico.

Now, back to the battle for 4th place. They break open the rulebook,
and after hours of calulating the organizers finally had the result.

"Alexandre Vinokourov finishes 4th due to review of the hundredth seconds recorded after each stage, total margin was .16 seconds. Therefore, Thomas Löfkvist finishes 5th. Thank you for waiting."

Interview - Thomas Löfkvist

Q: Well we just got the word, you will be taking 5th here in Italy.
A: Gah ... so close. But hey the sponsors only wanted a top 10, so I would say I did my job. See'ya guys in April.

5th is a great result. But with such an awesome rider as Löfkvist, it had to be expected. Pfft

Those things are always annoying Wink But fifth or fourth, that's not too big deal. Strong performance anyway. Oh, and a small correction: I think it was Larsson not Lofkvist who took the rainbow jersey and was now taken revenge of by Cancellara.

EA-Sony are back to defend Peraud's victory from 2010. However this year's version won't include any hills, so Larsson gets the role of team captain. Today marks one of three flat stages, with stage 2 being a ITT for this 4 stage tour.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/1.jpg

In his home country Brice Fiellu represents EA-Sony in the breakaway.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/2.jpg

53kms from the finish Feillu goes off solo,
really his only hope for glory on a flat stage.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/3.jpg

The peloton swallows up Feillu's breakaway partners 10kms later.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/4.jpg

Brice survives to the sprint point to pick up a 6 seconds time bonus.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/5.jpg

20kms to go now, Guesdon tries to bridge the gap to Feillu.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/6.jpg

To no advail, Feillu and Guesdon are brought back with 9kms to go.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/7.jpg

Larsson is taking to the front with Phinney on his wheel.
It's only fitting that the rain starts to fall now.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/8.jpg

1100 meters to go, Larsson can't keep the pace any longer.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%201/9.jpg

In a super close finish, Olivier Pardini takes a suprise win. 30 more riders cross the line in the next 3 seconds. Phinney gets blocked in to take 17th. Feillu hangs on to the end of the peloton to take 4th overall.

Interview - Taylor Phinney

Q: Can you tell us happened during today's sprint?
A: Well the narrow roads, plus the average sprinters up the road blocked in the top sprinters like Casper and Napolitano. So it was just a matter of staying on our bike and finding the smallest of gaps to squeze through, and I just couldn't find any.

Weird sprint. Just like you said, too many average sprinters Wink Looks like you have a nice shot at the overall if the TT is long enough.

Circuit Sarthe-Pays de la Loire - Stage 2

April 6, 2011

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%202/Profile.jpg

The World ITT Champion Larsson has yet to win a stage this year!
Maybe today he will turn the tide?

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%202/1.jpg

Steven Cozza is the first EA rider out the starthouse,
and puts a time up of 9'19''.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%202/2.jpg

But he is no match for Larsson, who destroys his time. 8'44''.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%202/3.jpg

Jurgen Van den Broeck can't match, 9'03''. Larsson has really set a great time, but is it enough to take the stage, or even GC?

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%202/4.jpg

Taylor Phinney has a nice ride today, 9 minutes flat.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%202/5.jpg

No REALLY, That guy just beat Larsson time!
Him, Jos Van Emden. Seriously,
the camera almost didn't get a picture of him go through.
Unbelievably, the Rabobank man goes 3 seconds faster!

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%202/6.jpg

Brice Fiellu tries to save his GC spot,
but with a time of 9'33'', those hopes are dashed.

i1236.photobucket.com/albums/ff456/mresuperstar3/Circuit%20Sarthe-Pays%20de%20la%20Loire/Stage%202/7.jpg

Yesturday's winner also wants to keep his jersey.
But that's not going to happen either with a time of 9'07''.
Olivier Pardini will keep 3rd overall however, Larsson jumps into 2nd,
and surprise winner Jos Van Emden takes the yellow jersey.

Interview - Gustav Erik Larsson

Q: What are the chances you take yellow?
A: Slim. Just two flat stages left, so I going to need some luck with sprint checkpoints to take 1st. Plus I also have to keep the sprinters behind me as well with big time bonifications at the finish as well. But we'll see what I can do.
