Paris - Nice Stage 1
Houdan - Houdan
Favourites: Cavendish, Bennati, Bos
Fairly short, very flat, this should be one for Cav. Can anyone beat him?
The break still hadn't fully formed by the time we hit the only categorised climb of the day. However, Roger Hammond(!) won it and will wear the polka-dot jersey tomorrow, probably his first time in any climber's jersey.
Spoiler
1st Roger Hammond (Garmin)
2nd Oscar Gatto (Lampre)
3rd Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis)
Eventually, everything settled down and the BOTD contained 14 riders, just 5 of whom were French, although two of them were, confusingly, Bichot and Pichot!
At the first of the intermediate sprints, which were placed on a tricky 4.5% incline, Marcato (Vacansoleil) used his power to win.
Spoiler
1st Marco Marcato (Vacansoleil)
2nd Alexandre Pichot (Europcar)
3rd Daniel Oss (Liquigas)
Flecha really does love hurting himself, doesn't he? He went on yet another pointless solo attack just after the sprint point 60km out.
At almost the exact same moment Flecha went out the front, Gavazzi, Lampre's sprinter crashed and went out the back. He was helped by Szeghalmi but it was the end of his day.
Second Sprint
Spoiler
1st Geoffroy Lequatre (RadioShack)
2nd Gerald Ciolek (FDJ)
3rd Oscar Freire (Team Katusha)
As the break was caught under the 20km banner, 4 riders gave it one last go to stay away, unsurprisingly Flecha was one of them. The others were Lequatre, Turgot and De Gendt.
As you'd expect, it came to nothing and a bunch sprint was certain. Our leadout went fairly well until Kittel decided that he didn't want to follow Thomas anymore and went walkabout. At this point, Boasson Hagen jumped across on to Ciolek's wheel and powered past him. Unfortunately, Cav was just too quick today and had the opportunity to show the world his rainbow stripes. Eddy was edged out by half a bike length.

Paris - Nice Stage 2
Montfort-L'Amaury - Amilly
Favourites: Cavendish, Bennati, Ciolek
An even flatter stage than the first one, this should be a sprint finish. A certain Cav victory?
The BOTD formed instantly and involved 3 riders. Dumoulin (Cofidis) was the only French rider in it today with Bole (Astana) and Barry (Sky). It would be a long day with 190km still to go.
Yellow jersey wearer Cavendish and green jersey wearer Boasson Hagen shared a conversation in the peloton. Was Cav trying to psyche Eddy out? Or were they chatting about dominating the sport for the next 10 years?
Europcar's Gautier crashed in the middle of the peloton which ended his day and he rolled in 10 minutes down.
Both sprints had the same result with Dumoulin, as expected. picking up maximum points.
Spoiler
1st Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis)
2nd Grega Bole (Astana)
3rd Michael Barry (Sky Pro Cycling)
As Dumoulin is the final rider to be swept up by the peloton, De Gendt launches a counter attack and is joined by Flecha and Turgot again, just like yesterday.
As we hit the final km, Flecha was still out in front but the sprinters were closing all the time. On the line it was close and Flecha thought he had it...but Bennati pipped him by the narrowest of margins. Schoolboy error from the experienced Flecha.
Everyone was confused, not least Appollonio, who thought his teammate had won.

That was a close sprint ! Good luck with Boasson Hagen for the next stage , he may win it.
I am looking forward to Milan San-Remo , Cancellara , Boasson Hagen , Gilbert , perhaps Ben Swift ? That race will be for you

Looking at the stage profile he may well win it.
The team for Milan-San Remo will be released very soon, and yes it is a sponsor goal to win it, so we will be sending the strongest team possible.
Thanks for posting, hope you are enjoying it.

Paris - Nice Stage 3
Cosne-Cours/Loire - Nuits-St-Georges
Favourites: Cavendish, Bennati, Ciolek
Flat, but with the nasty Cote de Becoup just 15km from the finish, could this be one for the punchier sprinters like Freire, Boasson Hagen or even Gilbert?
The BOTD contained 7 riders, including polka dot jersey wearer Hammond and strong sprinters Oss, Gatto and Said Haddou.
Oss comfortably won both sprint points, showing his solid form.
Knowing that we needed to try and put Cavendish and Bennati in trouble on the climb, Chavanel hit the front hard but only managed to drop 11 riders. Unsurprisingly, none of them were rivals. It looked like a regular bunch sprint today.
Our leadout train was dominant today and Thomas started his sprint with Gilbert, who was feeling very good today, ready to launch Eddy.
However, for a reason I'm not quite sure of, Boasson Hagen just didn't have it in the legs today and slipped down to 5th at the finish. At the front, Bennati looked good again and threw his arms up in delight. But, would you believe it, for the second day running, he was celebrating for nothing as Freire had just got him on the line. Weird stuff going on here.
For some reason, no matter how many times I clicked, the results would not export, so here is a screenshot of the stage result. I hope it's not a permanent issue.

Thanks a lot man!
Anyway, Kittel's fitness isn't great as he has no need to peak this early. He'll be going for later races including the Vuelta. But yeah, he seems to have a mind of his own sometimes and just follows who he wants! Maybe he needs to improve his english to understand my commands better.

Tirreno-Adriatico is the first ProTour race in Italy and is therefore seen as good prep for the Giro. The majority of Italian stage racers will be here and the race starts with a team time trial. A couple of flat-ish stages, hilly stages and a medium mountain stage before concluding with a very short time trial.
This race was a bit of a fail for us last year as not a lot of our riders were in form at this stage of the season. However we shall be looking for much better this year with Sanchez and a very strong time trialling team gives us a good chance of a stage win on either the first or last stage.

Tirreno - Adriatico Stage 1
Marina di Carrara TTT
A short team time trial to test the legs. Team work and practice will come in handy here and it will be important for the GC men to not lose too much time here.
Favourites: Rabobank, HTC, Garmin
The very first team on the course were one of the favourites, Garmin-Cervelo. Their time was good but nobody expected them to stay at the top.
HTC, as usual, had brought a very strong team in this discipline. Here, they are led by Danish TT champion Lars Bak on their way to beating Garmin by 8 seconds.
Overall favourite Cadel Evans and his BMC team hit the course with hopes of a decent result but they had a terrible time losing over a minute on the winners. A big loser today, Cadel.
Right behind them were hot favourites Rabobank who had an outrageously strong team. Their worse time triallist was actually better than Androni and Colnago's best! As expected, they set a formidable time of 20'02, 17 seconds quicker than HTC. That would be difficult to beat.
Another strong TT team, Saxo Bank, massively underperformed and set the same time as BMC. Not a good day for Richie Porte either, the Aussies having a rough time in a discipline they excel in.
We were the penultimate team to set off and with only Farnese Vini to come, it was up to us to try and beat Rabobank's sensational time. Here, we are lead by former Ukrainian TT champ Andriy Grivko. We were quick but not quick enough as we were 5 seconds down in second. Agonising result for everyone, but well done Rabobank, the best team won.

The first man over the line was Jos Van Emden and so he will wear the leader's jersey. However, fantastic news for the team is that young Italian rider Alfonso Montanaro is the best young rider and will get to wear the jersey in his home race, while 3 young Brits, Swift, Kennaugh and Dowsett aim to take it off him tomorrow. The future is looking bright for us.

Paris - Nice Stage 4
Creches-sur-Saone - Belleville
Favourites: Gilbert, Freire, Wegmann
A very lumpy stage that is undulating from the start, but the last 20kms are flat or even slightly downhill, so there shouldn't be big moves on the GC and there should still be some type of bunch sprint. Or it could be a day for a breakaway.
Today, the plan was to get Kittel into the breakaway as he wouldn't be of much use today. It would also mean we wouldn't have to do any of the chasing. He was successful and joined 5 others in the BOTD. They were Longo Borghini (Liquigas), Turgot (Europcar), Dumoulin (Cofidis), C Pineau (FDJ) and I Izagirre (Euskaltel).
However, as I expected, Kittel just wasn't strong enough to stay with the other 5 and he wasn't able to contribute all day. Here he is on the very steep Col du Joncin hanging on.
Geraint Thomas crashed in the middle of the peloton, but remarkably, he didn't bring anyone else down with him. He was straight back into the peloton without fuss.
Then, something really unexpected happened. Flecha and De Gendt attacked. This time, they took Bazayev (Astana) with them.
We hit the front quickly and the pace was very high. Leopard helped out, but there was no way we were going to bring them back today. De Gendt and Flecha are seriously strong riders and they were very determined. However, yet again, Flecha got outsprinted and De Gendt picked up the win for Vacansoleil. The peloton lost just over two minutes and it will be interesting to see if Flecha and De Gendt can hold on for the rest of the tour.

Tirreno - Adriatico Stage 2
Carrara - Arezzo
Favourites: Goss, Sagan, Van Avermaet
This is classed as a hilly stage but it's not too difficult. It undulates rather than climbs and the end isn't particularly difficult. However, some big GC contenders lost a lot of time yesterday. Will they try something early?
The day started easily enough and Montanaro was proudly wearing his first ever leader's jersey as the best rider under 25.
The BOTD contained 9 riders, the best of whom was clearly Samu Sanchez who is at the front here.
The rest of the day was horrendous and what I said in the stage preview about it not being too difficult was a HUGE mistake. Over the first categorised climb Santambrogio (BMC) attacked and was eventually joined by Gasparotto.

1st Leonardo Giordani (Farnese Vini)

KOM 2
Spoiler
1st Leonardo Giordani (Farnese Vini)
2nd David Loosli (Lampre)
3rd Ruslan Pidgornyy (Vacansoleil)
The second climb was very, very steep and caused huge problems. Basso had crashed just before it...
And he never made it back to the peloton. He was joined by Scarponi (Katusha, here at the back), Pozzovivo and a few other strong contenders. They would finish at least 7 minutes down and it looks like it's over for Basso and Scarponi. Grivko also got dropped trying to fetch water for the team.
At the end, the peloton contained just 71 riders and it was set up nicely for a seriously selective sprint. After the difficulty of the stage, there were not many sprinters left but Swifty still had enough to sprint. He did brilliantly but just started his sprint too late and was beaten by Goss and Offredo. Nevertheless, just being up there at the finish shows promise for the future, particularly Milan-San Remo.

The main change on GC is that Lars Boom takes over the lead from Van Emden even though Jos was in the same group as the leaders. Swifty's 4 second time bonus moves him just 1 second behind. Here's the Top 100, which Basso and Scarponi are not in.

And, finally, even though Montanaro got dropped at the very end, we still get to keep the white jersey as Swift jumps 4 seconds ahead of Kennaugh at the top. The only challenge for Pete looks to be coming from Sagan, although Stetina and Roux are both great riders. Can he win it?

Today, the plan was to get Kittel into the breakaway as he wouldn't be of much use today.
bahaha! i laughed at that!! hey one thing tho.. i realised you arent putting the sprint points and king of mountain points in. I know its hard cause theres up to 11 of them to do but please put them in. Even if its just at the end. but it would be good if they were put in as they happened!
but like i said before, great story, great team, im lovin it!
can you post a picture of your jersey? i havent actually seen it in the folded out form.

Yeah, I try to, but there were like 6 million climbs on the last stage of the Paris-Nice. I will make sure that I put the standings at the end of every stage though. I will post a picture just for you.
EDIT: I also forgot to export the events on that stage, so I had no chance of remembering who got what!

Paris - Nice Stage 5
St-Symphorien/Coise - Vernoux en Vivarais
Favourites: Gilbert, Contador, Taaramae
A very tough stage with the nasty Col de la Mure just before the end that will definitely shake up the GC. Flecha and De Gendt have a 2 minute advantage to protect, can they hold on?
Guess what, I forgot to export events again, so sorry, no intermediate sprint or KOM results again.
The BOTD contained 5 riders, the best of them were Le Mevel (Garmin) and Paulinho (Radioshack). The others were Cusin (Cofidis), Bichot (FDJ) and Turgot (Europcar).
On a very wet day, Gilbert went down on a tricky downhill section. He wasn't the first and he would not be the last, but as you'll see, he was definitely the biggest loser.
As the breakaway goes over the top of the 1st category Col de la Croix du Chauboret, Bichot can no longer keep up and that is the end of his day, with still 130km to go. Ouch.
Jerome Coppel (pictured), AG2R's leader was another big name to crash. Others were Casper and Geslin. Verdugo of Euskaltel crashed very heavily and broke his arm ruling him out until June.
In the valley before the final climb, Sylvain decided to attack and he built up a 2 minute lead as the peloton hit the Col de la Mure.
But the gap just disintegrated at an unbelievable speed and when the attacks started he was swallowed up. Here, he is being caught by Tony Martin, who was the first attacker whilst Nieve (Euskaltel) attacks from further back.
Wiggins was able to respond to everyone's attacks bar Contador's and he looked very strong. Contador just rode away to take an easy victory while Wiggins missed out on bonus seconds because he started his sprint too late and breakaway survivor Le Mevel just nabbed 3rd from him.
Remember when I said Gilbert's injury had a big effect? He was really struggling and at one point was in the same group as Kittel! He recovered a bit but he lost 17 minutes. Both Baden Cooke and David Veilleux finished way outside the time limit aswell. Tough day.
To top it all of, the results wouldn't export either, AGAIN. Not entirely sure what's going on.

Paris - Nice Stage 6
Rognes - Aix-en-Provence ITT
Favourites: T Martin, Wiggins, Leipheimer
A medium-length time trial that will cause the climbers trouble but just the type of thing that Wiggins needs to get on to the podium here. It will be virtually impossible to beat Martin though.
The first competitive benchmark time was set by Taylor Phinney of BMC, the young American continuing to improve all the time.
His time was quickly bettered by Jonathan Castroviejo and we had the odd scenario of Euskaltel leading a time trial.
Gilbert had clearly recovered well after yesterday's nightmare, both physically and mentally, as he set a very useful time that was 2nd fastest behind Castroviejo. Does he have any weaknesses?
Ignatiev (Katusha) destroyed Castroviejo's time by almost half a minute and it looked like he might stay there as some seriously good time triallists were nowhere near him.
One of those was American champion Leipheimer, who, expected to be right up there at the end, couldn't even displace the Russian and finished just 12th.
Geraint Thomas surprised everyone, obliterating Ignatiev's time by 40 seconds. Could anybody beat that?
Erm, yeah. The guy just behind Thomas was none other than Norwegian TT champion Boasson Hagen. He was feeling great today, but even so, his time was ridiculous, beating Thomas by very nearly a minute.
Maxime Monfort, the Belgian champion did a great job in simply getting near Eddy, as did Gustav Larsson just after him. They were still nowhere near though.
Our last man was of course British TT champion Wiggins, and after a poor start, he picked his pace up enough to go just behind Monfort, which, you have to agree, is a bit disappointing.
Tony Martin was next and he went 1 second quicker than Wiggins but surely Eddy had it in the bag now. Contador comfortably overtook notably crap time triallist, Nieve, but could he beat the Boss? Absolutely nowhere near! Just a second ahead of Martin and a stunning win for Boasson Hagen who shows his unbelievable all round ability again.

Not only did he take a magnificent win, but Eddy gets to wear the green jersey, which he could defend all the way with the remaining tough stages.

Tirreno Adriatico Stage 3
Terranouva Bracciolini - Perugia
Favourites: Farrar, Petacchi, Goss
A flat stage but with some tough climbs to tackle near the end. Again could be one for the punchier sprinters.
The break today contained our very own Italian Alfonso Montanaro as well as 9 other riders including Henderson (Sky), who clearly didn't fancy his chances of making it to the end of the stage for a bunch sprint.
At the only intermediate sprint of the day, Bandiera (Quickstep) was the only one interested, and, quite frankly, looked a bit stupid sprinting full gas while everybody else just kept rolling along.
Spoiler
1st Marco Bandiera (Quickstep)
2nd Kurt Hovelynck (Omega Pharma - Lotto)
3rd Elia Viviani (Liquigas)
At the categorised climb, Visconti and Carrara attacked out of the peloton but they couldn't quite catch the front group of 7 by the summit. They did eventually catch them just 8km from the finish. Montanaro had now been dropped from the break but was sitting with Visconti and getting pulled along.
Spoiler
1st Kurt Hovelynck (Omega Pharma - Lotto)
2nd Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel)
3rd Luke Roberts (Saxo Bank)
After that climb, Ivanov (Katusha) joined up with the front group and Rabobank decided to give up the chase for some strange reason, and therefore, victory was assured for the escapees. But who would take the stage? Unsurprisingly, it was the freshest of them, Serguei Ivanov that won the sprint, and, as he was the highest placed on GC aswell, he now takes the race lead from Boom. Our highest placed man was again Ben Swift in 15th.

Tirreno Adriatico Stage 4
Narni - Chieti
Favourites: Evans, Schleck, Anton
The first big stage for the GC, this is up and down for well over 200km. Sanchez has got to have a good day if he wants to finish high overall.
After numerous attempts to form a breakaway, the pace was too high on the first long climb, but eventually one did form and in it were 7 brave riders ready to take on 200km of hills. Over the top of Sella di Corno, Hernandez (Euskaltel) has already been dropped, so now there are just 6.
Spoiler
1st Francesco Failli (Farnese Vini)
2nd Matteo Tosatto (Saxo Bank)
3rd Serge Pauwels (Sky Pro Cycling)
7 riders had already been dropped on the first climb including JJ Haedo and Henderson. They would come in over 40 minutes down but, remarkably, inside the time limit.

As they hit the second categorised climb, Serge Pauwels made his move and only Failli and Cheula could follow. It was over for the others.

1st Serge Pauwels (Sky Pro Cycling)
2nd Giampaolo Cheula (Geox)
3rd Francesco Failli (Farnese Vini)
On the same climb, the peloton shattered into about 20 different groups, and there were big riders losing out everywhere you looked. The first was Czech champion Kreuziger (Astana) who battles on past a confused fan, seemingly not aware that Cofidis aren't even here! The American champion is Dave Zabriskie.
Also distanced are Basso, Lofkvist and, even further back, Scarponi. You can see the size of the peloton in the distance.
As we approached the final climb, 3 riders gave it a go. They were Frank Schleck, Cunego and Visconti. It would prove to be a great attack.
At the front, Failli easily dispatched Pauwels in the sprint to take a fantastic victory.
Frank Schleck was unstoppable as he took an easy 4th, and then there were 2 Katusha riders as Pozzato incredibly beat Cunego. Race leader Ivanov (blue jersey, bottom of picture) just hangs on to the lead whilst in the group behind Sanchez finishes with Cadel Evans in a decent 13th place. Cancellara also finished brilliantly after helping Sanchez up the final climb.

Paris - Nice Stage 7
Brignoles Biot - Sophia Antipolis
Favourites: Contador, Menchov, Wiggins
This stage contains the Cote de Cabris and Col du Ferrier, which is one huge climb, a bit like the Telegraphe/Galibier or Soulor/Aubisque, just not quite as challenging! The end isn't too difficult though, so there shouldn't be massive time gaps. Nevertheless, Wiggins is going to have to be alert if he wants to stay on the podium.
On a VERY wet day, the BOTD contained 12 riders, 1 of whom was Gilbert testing his legs after his crash the other day. The highest placed rider in the breakaway was Kadri (AG2R) who was 7 minutes down.

1st Blel Kadri (Ag2r - La Mondiale)
2nd Francesco Gavazzi (Lampre)
3rd Cédric Pineau (FDJ)
Longo Borghini (Liquigas) was in the break to defend his polka dot jersey. However, getting a puncture wasn't in his plans. Luckily, two riders were bridging from the peloton. Turgot and Chainel helped him back up.

On the big climb of the day, the Cote de Cabris, Gilbert could not keep up with inferior climbers in the break. He was feeling really bad after his crash 2 days ago and came back to the car to have a chat with us. We decided to pull him out to give him a rest before his huge April calendar and he climbed into the team car. Massive disappointment.

3rd Christopher Baldwin (Sky Pro Cycling)
On the final big climb Cote du Gourdon, Kadri decided to go it alone. Not that hard a decision as he'd been doing pretty much all the work anyway.

2nd Christopher Baldwin (Sky Pro Cycling)
3rd Cédric Pineau (FDJ)
On the long descent that follows, no less than 8 riders hit the deck. The main one was Thomas De Gendt of Vacansoleil who then took part in a team time trial as his entire squad came back to help him. It was all in vain though, as he came home 10 minutes down.
On the tough final circuit, there were loads of attacks, but, as with Stage 5, the only one that worked was Contador's. Kadri easily held on for a solo victory (the other riders in the picture are a lap down), and Contador came in 2nd. Wiggins rode brilliantly to gain time on all of his rivals and a podium place looks almost certain now.

As you will know if you have read the goings-on at Paris-Nice, the great Philippe Gilbert is carrying a bit of an injury and is not in great shape.
His season is obviously based around April and is just round the corner. So, I have a question for you (just to have a bit of interaction, you know ).
Philippe is in the provisional squad for the Milan-San Remo. Do you want to:
a) Keep him in there as he could still be very useful, or
b) Give him a rest and replace him with someone else (if so, and you know my squad well enough, feel free to pick a replacement for me )
This may seem weird, but if you are following the team, why shouldn't you be involved? Like some sort of assistant manager.
Thanks.
ps. Bear in mind that if you're the only one that comments, your decision will be final.
