Grand Prix d'Ouverture La Marseillaise is a single-day road bicycle race held annually in February around the city of Marseille, France. It is usually the first race of the European calendar.
2011 Route
Allauch - Aubagne
This year's route is a lot easier than last few years. It can now be considered a sprinter's classics, rather than hilly one. The race should be easier to control, and we should expect bunch sprint for the win.
Sky Squad
Geraint Thomas will begin his season here. He's definitely highest profile rider in the race, but clearly out shape. CJ Sutton will be our man here and we are hoping with a victory with him, adding that he has good shape after Tour Down Under. The rest of the team will support him.
Stephen Cummings is one of the early attackers. Joined by four other riders, they create first break of the day.
The peleton is led by FDJ and Topsport at high pace. The break is caught shortly thereafter.
It's Preben Van Hecke ( Topsport ) who animates the seconds attack. This time it's Kurt Asle Arvesen who is following. Hopefully, this break will stick around for longer.
The breakaway of the day is made. Although they seem unlikely to succeed, as they are never given more than two minutes lead.
With 30km to go the break had been caught. Robert Hayles ( Endura ) is lonely attacker, hoping for a solo victory. Arvesen, as our road captain makes the decision not too chase him back too early.
It was good decision as FDJ lead the peleton, closing the gap to Hayles, saving us from additional work.
12km to go and our train is formed. We are looking super strong today. Arvesen is the leading rider so far and still has plenty of energy. We feel very postive, and bit secure with good lead-out ready for Sutton.
When Geraint Thomas took over, the race literally blew apart. His brilliant flat and lead out skills helped us to create a gap between Hunt and the peleton. Though Sutton's couldn't hang onto Hun't wheel. Now this race will either end with epic fail or epic win !
500metres to go and Hunt is still leading, thanks to Thomas superb lead-out. Will he survive and get very unexpected win here ?
Yes, he will. Amazing feat by our team today. Although can't help thinking we could have made it 1-2 if Sutton didn't loose Hunt's wheel. Hunt takes his first win in our team. Great team effort.

After-Race Meeting
The rider of the race ? Hmmm... first race back and it's becasue of his lead-out skills we won, Geraint is the man. Already showing how talented he is. Although the final didn't go right to the plan, we are still very happy with the ending result.
Other Race Results and Janury Summary coming up tomorrow ! Hope you enjoyed the report. Stay Tuned and Comment if you may.

A very good win from Hunt. And also a positive Down Under.
Yea agreed, will be essential rider in our cobbled classics so nice to se him in good early form. Thanks
roturn wrote:
This was indeed unexpected.
Brilliant lead-out. You should definitely teach me.
Aye, quite I guess Thomas Flat skill compared to the other riders was soo better he just rode away, even with his fitness low. You are definitely getting better in lead-outs And I am not really that good at sprints Let's see if I prove my skills in Qatar first.
dienblad wrote:
The same for me. Brilliant leadout, need too learn from you (altough I have none with the flat skills as Thomas)
Thomas flat skills help a lot. Well, let's see what I can do in Qatar, and if I do similar I might thrown in few tips, though I don't think I have any Thanks

Haha. Fothen 3rd in San Luis. Good joke, next one.
Also nice to see Förster doing well, his transfer to UHC was indeed pretty good for him, in real and in your story. No chance for all the Italians behind.
@Roturn Thanks. Yeah it was good move by Förster. Quite funny to see all the Italians behind him
January Sumary
Races and Winners - January
The new season started with 7 big races in January. Topping the list was Pro Tour race - Tour Down Under. It was our only race, which we performed admirably finishing on 2nd and 3rd Overall.
2nd biggest race in Malysia was won by Matteo Rabottini. Surprsing winner, beat creknowec climbers such as Kiserlovski ( Astana ) or Cobo ( Geox ). In the sprints, Kenny van Hummel showed his strength with two wins.
Giro della Calabria was the last stage race this January and dominated by young Italian star, Diego Ullisi. Grand Prix d'Ouverture La Marseillaise was the first classics of the season, with another unexpected winner. Jeremy hunt. Who we are very pelased for.

Tour of Oman
Tour of Oman is the most important stage-race for us this February. Arguably the most prestigious as well, we will target the sprints with Edvlad Boasson Hagen. This year's edition also includes tough finish on the Green Mountain and hilly time trial.
Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
The classics that opens the cobble season. And one of the most important too. Last year Juan Antonio Flecha took amazing first win for his new team Sky with solo ride. We hope we can make it two in a row.
Hope you Enjoyed The Month Summary. We are off to Qatar now, wish us luck !

The Tour of Qatar is a road bicycle race race held in Qatar and is part of the UCI Asia Tour. The race consists of a men's competition over six stages. The race contains only flat stages, so it is usually won by a sprinter.
Route 2011
The 2011 route is very similar to the 2010 one. The TTT is replaced by 2km prologue. 5 flat stages will decide the winner, who more than likely will be a pure sprinter.

Sky Tour of Qatar Team
Geraint Thomas is our leader here - on paper. Definitely Christopher Sutton is our definte sprinter here, clearly with the best shape. The squad is here to help him all the way, if everything goes good on the day, you might see 8 riders lead-out from us.
Last minute change, Juan Antonio Flecha will join the squad and replace injured Stephen Cummings. With Flecha and Geraint in our train, I think we just might control the sprints
Sutton must be the favourite here I think. Rider with most raced days in the season so far, and with the strongest team support too. Förster might be a dark horse here already with a win in a very good field. We don't know much about the other sprinters form, so we will take it day by day who is the marked man here.
Tour of Qatar begins with a stage that coulnd't be shorter. Only 2km's long, it suits powerful riders. Great course for Geraint, but he isn't in form. We don't expect really great result here. On paper, the big contender should be young Italian, Malori and in-form Australian, Rory Sutherland.
David Veilleux is one of the first starters out of the gatehouse and sets an respectable time, beating the best time by massive 2 seconds.
3'06
Nobody expected anything big from Enrico Gasparotto today. Well, everybody was wrong as Enrico rode the best prologue of his life. 4 seconds faster than Veilleux, could he get surprising victory here ?
3'02
Pavel Brutt isn't know for his prologue skills, but makes another surprisingly good time.
3'04
It's Adrian Malori who is the favourite today, and he doesn't disappoint. Sets new best time, though only 1 seconds fatser than Gasparotto.
3'01
Rui Costa is great all-rounder, and being TT Champion of Portugal, its bears some pressure on getting results in TT's. Good ride, only 3 seconds slower than Malori.
3'04
Rory Sutherland comes here with great form. Buling his form up till Tour of Oman, which he hopes to shine. It's was close call and there's less than a second separating him from Malori today.
3'01
Geraint Thomas came here as an big favourite, not in-form, as many other riders. The time he set isn't what he is capable at his best, but it doesn't disappoint.
3'03
Gustav Larson is more renowned as TT'er than Prologue Specialist. Although he sets respectable time, just 3 seconds slowest than the winner on the day - Adrian Malori.

After - Race Meeting
Well, the stage went better than expected. None of our riders are in shape, except Sutton, and to have 2 riders in Top 6 is good start. Tomorrow's stage is going be hell windy, so everything can happen on the stage. Will be an intersting race for sure.
The team is also happy with how Alex started his career at Sky. We see big things coming from him in the future and we will try to develop and nurture him into great rider.
