We should see a sprint finish today, but whether any sprinters will be present there remains to be seen.
The wet roads caused to Janez Brajkovic to fall, the Slovenian was already well dwn in the overall but was a key team mate for his RadioShack team.
A few km's later we have another crash. It's Brajkovic again! This guy is having absolutely no luck today. It will be a long ride to the finish for him today.
With all of the sprinters dropped from the peleton their teams had no reason to set the pace. Nobody else seemed to interested in setting a high pace so Damiano Cunego decided to take advantage of this and try to get away near the finish.
He was followed by Kolobnev. The two never built up a very big gap.
Under the 1km banner, and Cunego and Kolobnev were still out in front but the peleton were closing in on them rapidly...
,,,But not rapidly enough and Damiano Cunego takes his second win of the race ahead of Joaquim Rodruguez at the line. Unfortunately for us their aren't any time binuses awarded at this race so the Overall standings don't change.

Cunego is now locked with Rodriguez at the top of the points standings. But Damiano will wear the jersey tomorrow, like he has for the past couple of days, as Rodriguez will be wearing yellow.

Gavazzi picked up some valuable points today to draw level with Pineau at the top of the standings. However the Frenchman will wear the jersey tomorrow on a countback.
The penultimate stage of this year's race. With an ITT tomorrow, the weaker time trialists will be looking to gain as much time as possible here today. Overall victory is still possible for Cunego but he'll have to ride well here today if he's to have any chance.
Many strong riders have lost a lot of time throughout this race through crashes. Some of them tried their luck in a breakaway today. Here we see Evans, Brajkovic, Horner and Lovkvist.
However these four were considered to dangerous by Katusha and were reeled back in before the finish. The Russian team took complete control of the peleton today.
The final hill was where all the action would take place. Cunego was being well protected by Simoni who was having a good race himself.
Moments later Rodriguez and Cunego attacked simultaneously. They definately looked to be the two strongest climbers so far in this race.
Together with Philippe Gilbert they formed a three man leading group. So far things were working well for Cunego, if these three could stay away and win by 30 seconds then our man would move into 2nd Overall.
Unfortunately during the decent these three were joined by most of the other favourites. This included Voeckler, Garate and Kiryienka, the three men Cunego was looking to gain time on.
Cunego had to do something, so approaching the final km he set a furious pace at the front of the group. Only Nibali and Popovych could follow.
The sprint started, as their were no time bonuses Cunego wasn't particularly concerned about winning the sprint. He just wanted to create a time gap back to the others.
Nibali came around Popovych and Cunego to take victory. The Italian hasn't been very active until now but has now moved into 8th overall, and with his TT skills he has a chance of a top 5 finish. Cunego finished second. But he didn't create a big enough gap to gain any time on his rivals they were all awarded the same time. This top 10 placing for Cunego means he has placed in the top 10 on every stage so far, a remarkable achevement. Can he continue the record tomorrow?
Except for Joaquim Rodriguez who, along with Phillipe Gilbert, fell of the back of the group during the sprint. He only lost 31 seconds, but that lost time could be crucial to to his chances of overall victory.

Gavazzi sacrificed himself for his leader, Cunego, today and did not take part in any sprints for KoM points.
We end this race with a hilly ITT. With the Overall Standings extremely close this promises to be an intriguing battle.
One of the first contenders to set off was Andreas Kloden. RadioShack has had an extremely unlucky race so far, can Kloden turn it around for them today. He rides well and sets the best time so far. 36'43
Cadel Evans is another one who's had an unlucky race. After crashing on the opening stage he's never really found his rhythm. He was a bit better today, but couldn't beat Kloden's time. 36'49
Tony Martin is the best time trialist in this race. He sets the top time so far. 36'29
This course looks to suit Alexandre Vinokourov perfectly. He proves that by smasjing Martin's time. A new best time for Vino. 35'48
David Millar is another one of the better time trialists in this race. He beats Martin, but can't beat Vino. 36'27
Damiano Cunego had high expectations coming into today's stage, the terrain suited him and he was a better TT''ist than a couple of his rivals above him. A podium finish was not out of the question. Or at least that's what we hoped, he had an absolutely shocking day today and was lucky to hold onto 5th overall. 37'33
Vasil Kyrienka, 4th overall, must be confident about taking a podium spot in the Overall today. He did everything he could to acheive that. Rodriguez will have to ride a good race today or else he might find himself losing the Yellow Jersey to the Belerusian. 36'25
Thomas Voeckler has been suprisingly good so far. Can he retain his position on the podium. It looks unlikely, he finishes 53 seconds slower than Kiryienka and loses his position to him. 37'18
Winner of stage 1, Juan Manuel Garate, isn't the greatest time trialist. But today he seemed very motivated to keep his podium spot. 37'08
The final man to leave the starting ramp was race leader Joaquim Rodriguez. He held a healthy lead coming into today's stage, but he'd need it as he's a poor time trialist. However it seems he was helped today by the hilly nature of the course. He was only 58 seconds slower than his fastest rival today and he seals overall victory at the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. 37'23
Alexandre Vinokourov takes a very convincing stage win.

If it's any consolidation to him, Damiano Cunego walks away with the Points Jersey courtesy of his four top 2 placings and a top 10.
Hi, Happy New Year. I hope you all had a great Christmas. I've been a bit busy so there's been no update's for a while.
I'm heading off in about an hour for a an overseas holiday in the Middle East (Dubai and Doha). So there won't be any more updates until at least the 12th.
