The last of the Etoile de Besseges should be one for sprinters, even though each one of the 4 laps starts with quite a steep climb. After a stage win and a second place Vermeltfroot looks almost unstoppable and he has a nice chance to take what might be the biggest win of his career
For the second time in this race, Niolas Portal took part in a breakaway. He managed to pass first 3 of the 4 summits of the day and added 9 points to his total. Lhotellerie, the leader of the rankings at the start of the day, managed to win only one point on the first climb of the day, which means that Portal is the King of the Mountains in Etoile de Besseges this year
Still not everything worked for us today as good as that. The 4 ascents proved to be too hard for Hayman and we were down to only 3 riders in our sprint train. After 3 amazing stages where he lead our train, Downing was a little bit tired an he wasn't able to put Vigano and Swift in the good positions he used to
This opened up a little bit the stage, with 2 new teams controlling now the sprint: Saur - Sojasun for Casper and Vorarlberg for Sebastian Siedler. CCC and the race leader, Vermeltfroot also kept it quite close, which put them in some good positions as well
Siedler had some problems with his sprint even though he had a perfect lead - out from Weissinger. It all came down to a battle between Casper and Vermeltfroot, probably the strongest riders in this race
Vermeltfroot came really fast in the final meters but he never managed to take the lead from Casper, who takes his second stage win, after winning the opening stage as well. Behind them Jegou crashed, but he only brought Pineau down with him, both of them crossing the line on their asses. With another second place Vermeltfroot secure his win in the overall, points and young rankings. This has been quite a good race for Sky with Swift's stage win, Portal's King of the Mountains jersey and Pauwels' top 5 in the overall rankings

After the opening TTT we are heading to the next 5 flat windy stages in Qatar. The good news could be that the top sprinters don't take part in this race, Hagen and Sutton's biggest opponent looking to be Haedo, Van Hummel, Furlan, Pedersen, Fischer or Vaitkus
Inside the last 10 kilometers, Pedersen crashed and brought down with him some other important names such as Furlan, Posthuma, Van Emden, Van Hummel, Van Staeyen, Roche, De Haes, Lowik or Aerts. The good news though is that neither of the Sky riders were involved there and we might be able to protect our positions won yesterday in the TTT
Our riders know that some of their biggest opponents are out for today's sprint and have even a bigger chance now to take an another stage win here, in Qatar. Flecha, Arvesen, Hagen and Sutton are going to represent us in the sprint
Flecha and Arvesen did an amazing job to put Hagen and Sutton in front of the pack. Still there are some important sprinters left in the pack, one of them being Sieberg, who already got Sutton's wheel
Even though Hagen and Sutton were let in a great position, Arvesen and Flecha left them alone in the wind quite early and they lost the lead in the last kilometer to Sieberg and Neyens
And Neyens takes the stage win in front of Weylandt and Sieberg. All the three riders that finished on the podium today were in our splistream at the start of the sprint, which means that from now on we have to be more careful since our opponents know now that one of the best wheels to follow in the pack ours. Also with the bonifications won today, both Neyens and Sieberg passed our riders, which means that we've lost the first 2 positions in the overall rankings
Stage
1. | Maarten Neyens | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | 3h05'30 | 2. | Wouter Weylandt | Quick·Step | s.t. | 3. | Marcel Sieberg | Team HTC - Columbia | s.t. | 4. | Wim Stroetinga | Team Milram | s.t. | 5. | Tom Veelers | Skil - Shimano | s.t. | 6. | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 7. | Christopher Sutton | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 8. | Tomas Vaitkus | Team RadioShack | s.t. | 9. | Juan José Haedo | Team Saxo Bank | s.t. | 10. | Fabio Sabatini | Liquigas - Doimo | s.t. | 11. | William Bonnet | Bbox Bouygues Télécom | s.t. | 12. | Jürgen Roelandts | Omega Pharma - Lotto | s.t. | 13. | Dennis Van Winden | Rabobank | s.t. | 14. | Murilo Fischer | Garmin - Transitions | s.t. | 15. | Kristof Goddaert | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. |
Overall
1. | Maarten Neyens | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | 3h19'13 | 2. | Marcel Sieberg | Team HTC - Columbia | + 8 | 3. | Edvald Boasson Hagen | Sky Professional Cycling Team | + 9 | 4. | Christopher Sutton | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 5. | Kurt-Asle Arvesen | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 6. | Juan Antonio Flecha | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 7. | Stephen Cummings | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 8. | Bradley Wiggins | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 9. | Ian Stannard | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 10. | Geraint Thomas | Sky Professional Cycling Team | s.t. | 11. | Kenny De Ketele | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | + 10 | 12. | Sep Vanmarcke | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. | 13. | Pieter Jacobs | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. | 14. | Johan Coenen | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. | 15. | Kristof Vandewalle | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. |

yeah even though if I remember well he didn't ride too much time for Columbia in my story with them. But hopefully next time the train will be strong enough and he won't be able to do anything to stop us

We didn't have a great performance yesterday as neither Hagen or Sutton were able to take a place in the top 5 of the day. Hopefully that will change for us today
With 25 kilometers to go due to the strong wind the pack was split into 2 groups: around 35 riders maintained in the first group, 70 in the second and 30 in the last one. 6 of our riders managed to stay in the first group, only Stannard and Thomas were missing from there. 2 of yesterday's performers, Neyens and Sieberg are also in the leading group
15 kilometers later there were even less riders in the front group and Flecha felt like he had a nice chance to surprise everyone and take the stage after an solo effort
With Flecha going on his own we weren't able to make a train. Sutton followed the Saxo Bank train, while Hagen got in the splistream of his former team - mates, Reynes and Sieberg, but it seems that the Aussie Champion has made the better decision
Flecha didn't manage to get away from the others but he managed to stretched the group and only 7 riders were able to follow him: De Backer, Arashiro, Bonnet, Neyens, Bellis, Haedo and Sutton
Even though he looked like he's been losing speed, Flecha managed after all to enter the last kilometer of the stage in the lead even though he is not really the strongest sprinter in the group
But in the final meters he was passed by both Bonnet and Sutton, with the French looking settled for a stage win
Bonnet takes the stage in front of Sutton and Flecha. Behind their group only Sieberg, Hagen and Arvesen were able to came in the same time with them. The next 90 riders were registered with a lose of one minute and three seconds, while the rest of the pack finished at more than 2 minutes behind the winner. Neyens keeps the jersey for an another day but Sutton won some important seconds today from the bonifications

it wasn't Flecha's fault, it was Columbia's for not making a fast train

Yesterday we saw the first split in the pack in Qatar this year, but today it's not very likely to see that again as the wind is not as strong as yesterday
Once again we are heading to a mass sprint with Flecha, Arvesen, Hagen and Sutton. But this stage sees a change in our train as Hagen is now in the last position, which we hope that will help us win our first sprint here, in Qatar
But we are not the only fast train today, as Van Hummel and Veelers are going an amazing job for the Skil train. Yesterday's winner, William Bonnet is also there, right behind Veelers, as well as the Argentinian sprinter Juan Jose Haedo
Sutton was leading in the last kilometer, but Veelers and Bonnet were coming pretty fast from the other side of the road. Hagen is still in Sutton's wheel but hopefully he will be able to get out of there in time
And today the train to follow was the Skil one as Bonnet gets his second stage win in a row, this time followed by Veelers and Haedo, while Hagen finished only fourth. Neyens finished 7th today but he keeps the leader's, as Sutton couldn't get in the bonifications, but he looses the points jersey to Bonnet

William Bonnet won the last two stages but is he strong enough to take a third stage win? One thing is for sure our train will be there and try to stop him
Flecha didn't have a great day and he wasn't able to put us in really the best position. Also Sutton is back in the last position in our train in order to try to get some bonifications for the overall rankings
Arvesen and Hagen did an amazing job for Chris and brought our train in front with just 2 kilometers left, with only Garmin looking as strong as us
But as the stage reached its last kilometer, Bonnet came with an amazing acceleration to take the lead, leaving both Garmin and Sky trains behind him
Sutton tried to follow him but the French seems to be just too strong in this start of the season
Bonnet takes his third stage win in a row and consolidates his grey jersey, but the overall is still far away from him. Sutton managed to get the second place and with the bonifications he becomes the race's leader with just one stage left!

yep, he's definitely the strongest there but because of Bouygues bad performance in the opening TTT he has no chance to take the overall, which isn't really bad news for us
