Was Hincapie wrong for making his comments?

Hincapie said right after the stage and the next day that he was extremely disappointed and hurt by Astana and Garmin driving the peleton, taking it as a personal attack. Also, I read his brother say, "...there have been an awful lot of excuses flying around. Why do they feel like they have to explain anything if they haven’t done anything wrong? They are obviously guilty or worried.”
Now, I think we can all agree that Garmin had no legit reason to drive the peleton to the line the last 10 or 15 k. And I think we can all agree Astana wasn't chasing at all, but just riding tempo.
So I'm curious as to everyone's opinion on whether Hincapie has a right to be upset, and is he acting extremely spoiled as if he is owed the yellow jersey?
I'm extremely biased seeing as I'm from Greenville, SC (Hincapie's home for many, many years now) and most of my family still lives in Greenville. Hincapie is a local hero there. He is the reason people are on their bikes in Greenville. He's the reason the US Pro Championships are being held there now for 4 consecutive years. So, what is the general opinion of the board?

Astana didn't just ride tempo... They cut advantage of the breakaway from 11 to 6 minutes. What Lance is saying to the media and what Astana is acctualy doing on a stage are two diferent things.
That said - Hincapie has no right to be upset on other teams. In fact he is to blame. He didn't organize guys in a breakaway well enough. |

When Astana was setting tempo, advantage grew from 6 to almost 9 minutes. It has never been more than 8.50, BlockHause.
But, still, Hincapie, Armstrong and Bruyneel are acting in childish way... If he had attacked with Ivanov, he would get his yellow. He didn't, and there is noone else to blame. Actually, you can't blame someone for RACING in cycling RACE, can you?
Although I haven't expected other behaviour from Armstrong and Bruyneel when they announced Lance's come back. Things they're making with Astana, against Contador, are just unfair and dirty... I hope Vinokourov will kick them away. |

I think the break never had 11 and 12 minutes. That where just a bug.. Since it went from 12 to 8minutes in 5minutes..

You know it was Hincapie who keept the pace himself alot of the time before the attack..? more than half of the brake where only sitting on Roches wheal since Roche didnt relay..

The whole situation is pretty stupid to me. I don't see how anyone can feel that he has the right to be in yellow. I mean - if you're not fast enough, you won't get the yellow.
I understand that you may be disappointed, but I don't understand that you go blame everyone else than yourself for it afterwards. |

I know, but my point was - he was five seconds late on finish line to get yellow. So he's only guy to blame for... He's five seconds faster - he gets 'maillot jaune', it's simple like that.
Well, he can also blame his Colombia-mates, who were setting pace in last km. They propably stealed him these 5 missing seconds. |

Garmin had 2 guys in the top 10 to protect and 2 riders in the break who could go above them, don't forget about Le Mevel, so if they want to chase what's the problem?
It seemed like typical BS from Columbia afterwards, behaving as though they are the guardians of the 'spirit of pro-cycling' and nobody else has any class. At the same time they blamed Hushovd for getting Bingo disqualified!!

I felt sorry for Hincapie and I think he was right to make his comments because after all he ha worked for othe people for 12 years, its the least he deserves is wearing the yellow jersey for 1 day. |

I don't get that at all. He's been in the peloton for 12 years - and so what? It's like saying that a footballer who've been around for 12 years deserve to win the Champions League - hell no.
If you're fast enough, you get to wear the yellow jersey. If not, too bad. |

You can get Orders, Medals or even Nobel Prize for working for other people, but not yellow jersey...

So you have forgotten that he actually wore the yellow jersey in 2006? |

I wouldn't call what Columbia did pace setting. They were definitely sitting up a good bit trying to slow the pace while still getting Cav the sprint points. I mean just look the way Cav came to the line. Looking to the left just trying to judge how much effort to use to just narrowly beat the next man over the line. I don't even think he knew Thor was coming up on his right. And to be relegated to the back for what I thought was fairly minor seemed way over the top. Just a little insult to injury to the team. They lose the chance at yellow and green in the same few seconds. |

This has to be the silliest complaint I've ever seen. To be upset because Astana and Garmin didn't "let" you take yellow? Since when and on what planet are yellow jersey's or any similar prize "gifted" to competitors? You either earn them or you don't. Should I complain that the guy next to me closed a bigger project and made more money than I did and therefore I got a smaller bonus (didn't happen, hypothetical)? We're mates and have been for 20 years, he should have tanked the project so I could get a bigger bonus.
Please, what nonsense. |

The odd thing... he's already worn the yellow jersey in the tour before.... 2006.
I don't think there's anything wrong with what Astana did. When you ride and the break is gaining time... you are not chasing.
Garmin... I just don't understand the point. If there was a GC threat... or any reason other then malice to chase them, it would be different. Chase the break down for a sprint... that's fine too. But just to keep the gap down to prevent a rider from taking a jersey you don't control... I don't understand the strategy. |

CrueTrue your analogy doesn't quite fit. Garmin chased him just to screw Hincapie not for themselves. Of course he should be upset. He lost the yellow jersey by 5 seconds.

you should wear the yellow on merit and not because it's been given to you. hincapie needs to grow up. if he's been racing for so long then he should understand how cycling works by now.
as for garmin chasing, if they want to chase then why do they have to justify themselves? it's a RACE for gods sake. they were probably just bored of free wheeling along for 2 weeks and wanted something to do. |

This reminds me of the time Sastre complained that Caisse weren't helping CSC bring back breaks "just because" Caisse had people in the break.
Nice guy that Sastre....but not a particularly bright cookie. |

Read my post before that. I accept that Hincapie's disappointed - any true sports man would be. But I don't accept that he's blaming others for the fact that HE wasn't fast enough.
That Garmin chased is a part of the game. |
