OK, I am posting this already on another forum... not a PCM forum though, so its going to be new here.
This is my first copy of the game and being new to the sport some of my knowledge is limited so bear with me.
Anyway im going to copy across the posts ive made already.. but im not sure if this forum software will allow me to keep the same neat layout (which would be a shame). |

Christian Vande Velde (Team Leader):
American 'Vande Velde fast become one of the Worlds Top cyclists last year with an impressive showing that included 4th place overall in the Tour de France. His success proved to be the springboard for him to become the teams on road captain.

David Zabriskie:
The 30 year old American is the only American to have won a stage on each of the Grand Tours (France, Spain and Italy). Known as 'DZ' his character is said to keep the team going as well as his ability on the track to compete at the top level.
Svein Tuft:
Svein is a Canadian powerhouse and will give the team a new edge in time trial racing. He won a silver medal in the 2008 World Championships whilst also gathering a clutch of golds at the Pan-Am's in the same year.

Garmin Take New Direction
General Manager shake-up in attempt to improve team fortunes
By: Gregor Brown
The excitement of yet another year of professional cycling draws near as the UCI Pro Tour gears up for its 5th season and within that the Garmin-Slipstream team is once again looking to improve on its current stature with a change at the head of the operations.
Garmin looked outside of the organisation to bring in some much-needed experience and with that in came Al Kooba who has a proven track record within British Cycling and indeed helping one of the Garmin teams latest recruits Bradley Wiggins become one of the top track cyclists in the world.
Al Kooba said to cyclingnews "Last year this team came close, very close to breaking out and being a winning team. However they fell short on too many occasions and that fine line is what can make or break a team and rider in this sport"
He contiuned "When I was approached to take this team on, it was a case of packing my cases and getting over here to become involved. The focus is to build a winning package on the Pro Tour as well as helping our riders compete at the right end of the big races"
Cyclingnews also got a chance to take a look at the pre-season offerings within Garmin as the team gears up to send its riders to their various camps before the racing begins. Individually riders such as Vande Velde, Millar and Wiggins will be looking to stamp their mark on the racing scene early in an effort to 'show up' for the Grand Tours... whilst at the other end of the scale, young Dan Martin will again be hoping to remain National Champion in Ireland whilst establishing himself within the team and Pro Tour.

Pre-Season Camps Yield Success
However Wiggins makes his concerns public
By: Peter Moore
The Garmin-Slipstream team went through their pre-season camps without serious incident over the past week as the new General Manager Al Kooba split his riders into 2 groups, as they found bases in both Santa Barbara, USA and Luccia, Italy for the 7 day camps.
Unfortunately for Garmin their newest recruit Bradley Wiggins who was based in Luccia for 7 days, found time to make his concerns known given his first crack at the camp. Wiggins said "The current training regime is becoming a strain for me. We have little rest in between sessions and with the Tour of Australia coming up at the end of the month I would have preferred a lighter approach over the 7days"
Kooba quickly responded to dampen any concerns about team harmony "Bradley made his feelings known to me and I was happy for him to be honest with the press. Our schedules are specifically made with both trainers and physios in mind, everything is conducted scientifically so we know how far we can push each rider and when to stop. Bradley will be all the better for his efforts here in Italy as will all our riders in the various camps"
With the camp in Italy stirring a little controversy, across the Atlantic in Santa Barbara, 24 year old Australian Trent Lowe was getting rave reviews after his performances in the Californian sun. Lowe is expected to race in the Australian National Championships later in the month, so hopes will be high for the specialist climber to make his mark in his homeland.

Cadel Evans 'Silences' Critics
Back to Back race wins for Lotto rider, as Garmin struggle to compete
By: Gregor Brown
The 168km Australian National Championship was won yesterday by Silence Lotto rider Cadel Evans who has started 2009 with a pair of wins following his victory in the ITT event a day earlier.
Above: The Silence Lotto riders work hard to break away from the peloton
For Evans it was a case of teamwork earning him the win as the Lotto train evolved out of the pack in the final 30km to ensure the Evans triumph. Yet Silence Lotto did not have things all their own way and infact the early pace looked to favour the Garmin-Slipstream trio of Trent Lowe, Christoper Suttonand Cameron Meyer who all returned home to compete for the road crown.
Alas tactical mistakes cost the Garmin team a shot at the end of the race, with both Sutton and Meyer falling well off the pace to finish in the bottom 5 placings. Trent Lowe on the other hand continued a strong solo showing earning a 16th place finish but way off his expected pace leaving the team with a few more headaches to overcome.
Above: Cadel Evans can celebrate his National Championship
Back to the race winner and the impressive Evans raced clear in the final stretch to secure his win and only Stuart O'Grady (Team Saxobank) would split a Silence Lotto 1+2 finish as Evans teammate Matthew Lloyd rolled home in the pack in 3rd. The Italian team wouldnt have things all their own way though, as the team title went to Drapac Porsche Cycling as the Australian Team finished just ahead of American powehouse Team Columbia High Road.
Post Race Comments:
Trent Lowe (Garmin-Slipstream): "We had a plan that should have seen us stretch out enough of a gap to put ourselves in a winning position by the sprint, but things didnt work out well. We had problems with our re-filling and Cameron (Meyer) had a few chain problems that left us out of sync. Its disappointing not to impress when you come home, but we have alot of racing left and its down to us to improve as individuals"
Cadel Evans (Silence Lotto): "It is a perfect start for us and for me personally. Obviously winning your National Championship is a great honour, but we have alot of hard work ahead and with an ambitious team we could achieve alot more than this in 2009"

Boonen Takes Stage 1
Quick Step rider 'steps' up to edge out the close finish
By: Gregor Brown
And so it begins, the first official event on the UCI Pro Tour calender and the teams find themselves in the warm surrounds of Australia for the 6 stage Tour.
With all the UCI Pro teams at the event, the most notable story was the return of Lance Armstrong to the cycling tour as he begins his comeback in earnest, preparing for another shot at the Tour de France in July.
Above: Heading through the forest, the lead pack look to form a gap
The race itself held a steady pace throughout the early stages with very few riders looking to attack and leave the peloton. Then with 60km on the road, 4 Serramenti riders made their move head up by Swiss speedster 'Bertogliati. This move caught the eye of various team leaders in the pack including those from Team Quick Step who responded with enough fight to put Tom Boonen in position for the sprint win.
Above: Boonen crosses the line arms aloft as he won out in the sprint
Outside of the overall lead, Bertogliati and Tanner share the King of the Mountain lead following the opening stage. Whilst young Australian Matthew Goss leads the Young Riders category for his Team SaxoBank. Venezuelan team Serramenti lead the team timings thanks to their impressive 4 man breakaway early in the stage.
Post Race Comments:
Martijn Maaskant (Garmin-Slipstream): "13th is enough for me to stay in contention at the top end of the rankings. As a team we timed our attacks well, but I think we still have heavy legs at times and that prevented us putting on a concerted effort at the end to stay in with a realistic sprinting chance"
Matthew Goss (Team SaxoBank): "Being an Aussie, this race obviously holds that special attraction to me. Todays stage was hard work for us, we lost our train early and that left me in a position where by I had to rely on others to help me work and stay in contention. In hindsight I feel I could have took the stage from Tom (Boonen) with an early break in the sprint, but I have to be happy with what has been achieved today"

Gerrans Too Good
Aussie rider sprints to stage win, but Boonen retains Yellow Jersey
By: Gregor Brown
Stage 2 and the 148km trek from Hahndorf to Stirling would test all the teams as they fought a varied track that included tough mountain sections. Stage 1 victor Tom Boonen knew he had to keep his Quick Step team together, but for a large chunk of the peloton their race was hurt early on as a spate of incidents saw many riders unseated and thus lose their way in the mid-day heat.
Above: Carnage as riders try to avoid those already on the road
At the front of the pack the Garmin-Slipstream team made their move as team leader Maaskant demanded more from his team, this breakawy saw 4 Garmin riders squeeze out a 2 minute lead over the peloton with less than 30km to go.
However mis-communication appeared to cost the team their rythmn as 2 riders slowed to get feed from the car, causing their train to lose its flow and allow the main peloton to haul them back in to the group.
Above: Gerrans late surge see's him take the stage away from Boonen
As the Garmin team found themselves stuck in the pack, it was Tom Boonen who appeared to be favourite to sprint out the win. Yet he was surprised at the final run in as Australian Simon Gerrans (Cervelo) put on a late spurt to cross the line arms aloft for the Stage win.
Post Race Comments:
Simon Gerrans (Cervelo Test Team): "Alot better for us in that race. It was rough you know, alot of riders went down early...we lost a man in that melee, but in the end it came down to a shorter sprint than we expected and that allowed me to wind up the gear and take it at the line"
Tom Boonen (Quick Step): "It is a good feeling to still have this jersey after todays stage. As people have said, the race was rougher than it should have been, but you get those days and if you can come through it across the line with the pack, you will stay close to the top and thats how it happened for me today"

Boonen Bounces Back
Yellow Jersey leader remains king of the road
By: Gregor Brown
Midway through the Tour Down Under and the leaderboard continues its familiar theme with Quick Step's Belgian rider Tom Boonen winning his 2nd stage of the tour to hold on to the Yellow Jersey whilst adding to his timed lead. Boonen found himself stuck in the midst of a tricky peloton that once again saw a mass pileup leave teams and riders scratching their heads at their luck.
Yet the Belgian once again found he had more in the tank as we entered the final 2km, out-sprinting Young Rider leader Matthew Goss to keep his lead ahead of another Australian Simon Gerrans.
Above: Garmin riders Tuft and Lowe make a break
In the challenge for the other jerseys, Bbox Bouygues Telecom remain ahead of the team standings although the Russians Team Katusha took the stage. Vying for the Polka Dot jersey in the mountains Italian Lorenzo Bernucci of LPR Brakes Farnese Vini took the stage win, yet its the Swiss rider Rubens Bertogliati who remains at the top.
Finally in the battle to be the top young rider at the tour, Aussie Matthew Goss continues to dominate the jersey as he remains ahead of Daniel Oss (Liquigas) and Greg Van Avermaet (Silence-Lotto).
Above: Boonen (left) is seen in the pack wearing the yellow jersey before he attacks for the stage win
With the tour now heading towards its run in, the pressure will now intensify on those teams with their riders still involved in the race for each category. It now becomes more important for the tactical side of the racing to take prominence as a lone rider is a losing rider.
Post Race Comments:
Al Kooba (Garmin-Slipstream General Manager): "We bought a mixed team to this tour, experienced and youthful but although we did have high expectations there is still alot of promise considering how bad we have raced across these 3 stages. Our plan will now focus on Martijn (Maaskant) and Dan (Martin) as they are still in touch with the leaders, but it is a long slog and a few of those who came here will have to prove alot to me in the final 3 stages"
Daniel Martin (Garmin-Slipstream): "We are racing below standards expected of this team. It has been tricky out there at times as we are still lacking some cohesion as a unit, hopefully we can change that tomorrow and then push on for the season ahead"

Geslin the Great
Frenchman is King of the Sprinters
By: Gregor Brown
With tension increasing, the fate of those chasing a dream in Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under remained intact, as although Boonen was chased down in the final sprint by Anthony Geslin of Francaise des Jeux, the Belgian placed third and remained in control of the yellow jersey.
Norweigan Arvesen of Team SaxoBank also placed higher than Boonen but with Gerrans behind in 5th and Matthew Goss out of contention, the Belgian has just 2 more stages to get through to win the Tour.
Above: The Garmin train that bought the Peloton back to the lead riders
With some early sprint stages in the race, it was Garmin-Slipstream who opened up early on as they wanted to exert their pressure to keep Maaskant and Tuft close to the leaders going into the final stages. Yet for all their early success in the sprints, the team would fall away with Martijn Maaskant clinging on to his hopes of a Top 10 finish.

Geslin's victory has pushed him into the top 5 places overall, yet Boonen retains a 10" lead over those chasing him, a lead that his team Quick Step is unlikely to let him drop with 2 days remaining.
Following the 4th stage the only major change in the leaderboards was Spanish team Fuji-Servetto moving atop the team standings, disposing Bbox Bouygues from that position they had held over the past 2 stages.
Post Race Comments:
Al Kooba (Garmin-Slipstream General Manager): "Martijn (Maaskant) has moved into 5th place and he has a great chance to stay in that pack by the end of the tour. Its a positive performance from him and something that I will consider when we select our squads for the Grand Tours in Europe, but we still have alot to work towards over the coming months"
Anthony Geslin (Francaise des Jeux): "I am very happy with this stage win, we have been close as a team in the previous stages, but today we timed everything well and I got the push needed to out-sprint Tom (Boonen) for the win. It will take alot for anyone to catch the leader now, but I will be there giving my effort to see if we can achieve that"

OK I am now up to date with my game and all the posts ported across
Hopefully you can enjoy it as I go - as I say my cycling knowledge will be overshadowed by most in here, so bear with me as im always learning.
On that note, any feedback or comments are welcome and I hope you will stick around to see how this pans out.
Cheers, |
