Watts in Giro

Shock Amazing. The top 5, bar Basso, achieved their highest level in a grand tour ever. Menchov's almost 470W on the second climb of the TT is astonishing, as is Sastre's 460W at Vesuvius, a climb harder than Alpe d'Huez, after 3 weeks of racing. What's more, The level of this years Giro, is, according to these wattages, higher then that of last years Tour, much higher even. Because the highest average there was Sastre, 425W
That would not be enough for top 5 this year....

Other notes: Cunego never above 400W. Armstrong 40W away from his 1999-2005 form. Basso only 9W worse than his 2006 Giro, so he isn't much weaker, the opposition is just far stronger than that of 2006, where Basso easily won.

Also strange that Menchov, Di Luca, Pellizotti, Sastre all ride their best grand tour ever. To compare, Menchov Vuelta wins were at 425W average. Sastre's Tour win also 425W...

How do differing mountain types affect wattages. Is it not true that Giro mountains are generally more intense whereas the Tours are longer?

Goldberger
Very interesting read. I'm not an expert on watts, but it's interesting to see the level that was at the giro.

Basso only 9WShock weaker than in 2006 where he crushed the opposition, interesting.

WARNING: the time trial's climbs were too short to be considered, and done by many riders with time trial equipment.
Which is another reason the "Termine" climb cannot be compared to other races.

Therefore the real average is 430 watts.
Very high? Yes.

How do you messaure these wattages?
or where can i read what wattages that climber had on the specific climb?

Interesting to see, what was Basso wattages up Monte Bondone in 2006?

Meh, the Termine climb was 10km at 5,5%, and all GC riders used normal bikes, not TT bikes.

Sastre used full TT equipment, but the others listed used normal bikes, yes.

The wattages are higher because of the short distance (62km compared to a climb after 200km)...

Not because of the TT helmets a few used...

mattiasgt
How come the Blockhause is so low compared to the Vesuvio when that stage was much longer?

EDIT: Rest day effect maybe?

Not realy..Pellizotti was at the front..
Di Luca was going all out on that climb..all out day for Di Luca. Only Menchov and Garzelli some how managed to follow..
Maybe shorter distance?

TT BARS. They're illegal in road races and provide a much better frontal profile. The increase in speed is very marked by using them.

Meh, I still think it's mainly the distance and average percentage (only 5%) that caused the higher watts, rather then the TT position (it's overrated)

So, I wonder if Ricco, Piepoli and Sella had rode this year as they rode last year, how would they have done?

I think Ricco would've been 3rd on GC.

Piepoli and Sella wouldn't have won a thing, imo.

I think you´re right if you consider their strenght on dope. Without it they would all have sucked (ok maybe a stage top3 for Ricco).

So... it hasn't been stated yet but someone has to...

is this proof that they are all on the next generation of doping (whatever comes after CERA)?

We're all pretty sure that Di Luca doped a couple years back... and he just surpassed those results. A lot of older riders putting up the best wattages of their lives doesn't give me a lot of hope that things are getting cleaner in cycling.

Phanekim
these results are incredibly depressing.

ReschNicolai
But isn't this because this years giro was easy?

And if they are doped, hope they all get caught, and locked out 4ever!
