Hello, I'm Alejandro. I'm a Colombian. Let me tell you how I came to be here in the pissing rain in Gent.

I remember watching repeats of Lucho Herrera's Alpe d'Huez Tour stage win. It was stuff like that that got me into cycling. Spiralling cols, tree-studded alps, spindly climbers. The climbs. The famous and heroic battlegrounds of the world's most famous cycling race. Growing up in Colombia cycling was popular and without the beaurocracy of racing in other countries i.e racing licence, age group etc. I wasn't from a poor family, at least by Colombian standards, and therefore I could afford a second hand road bike. I started training hard, in my own little world, emulating, and often beating, Herrera and Parra.
Trouble was, I was no climber. I realise that now but then I just thought I was crap. I trained hard and gulped a tough diet of the hardest local climbs (and boy were they hard). However, try as I might, I couldn't perform. In the races I generally finished last after my lighter opposition. I was close to giving up. And then, after being disqualified from a race for going too slow, I decided to stop cycling. The GP Medellin would be my final race.
It turned out that I had mixed up the GP Medellin with the SP Medellin. I thought nothing of it and decided just to ride the race anyway. My plan had originally been to make it in the break and I chose to stick with it. 2k in, a rider I knew attacked and I followed. The break settled down, 8 of us making it up. I was finding the pace surprisingly easy and felt the surroundings were almost familiar. Wait, this was the Start line again! I asked the breaks instigator what was going on. He told me it was a crit and that we just kept going round and around, 9 times.
The bell lap and I was ready to try an attack, especially after I had heard we had a 4 minute lead over the pack. Thinking where the best place was to launch from, I somersaulted over a railing and into a churros stand (correct me if that's the wrong national stereotype). Wiping the hot oil off me and stealing some doughy goodness, I caned it back to the group. My legs were burning and I caught them in just 5k. We were already down the finish. It was 200m to go and it seemed that no one was going to sprint. I kicked down the right-hand side and, lo and behold, I won.

After the race and the presentations I went to ask one of the riders in the break why they were messing around so near the finish. He indignantly said that they were flat-out sprinting. "You were going like a train!" Maybe this sprinting lark was my thing.
Sitting in a cafe sipping Coca Cola, a broad-shouldered man approached and took a seat opposite me. He introduced himself as Rafael Antonio Niño. I was sure I recognised his name. "That was phenomenal." I thanked him before he continued. "You have so much talent, you sprint like a king. I have only seen that kind of sprinting ability in Europe." Then I remembered who he was: the DS of the Cafe de Colombia team in the 80's. How could I forget that? He offered to help me make it as a cyclist. I gladly accepted and I took my first big pedal revolution on the long road to pro stardom.

Following a year of dominating the Colombian flat races but still getting hammered in the mountains, Rafael said I should go to Europe. There would be more opportunities in the kermesses in Belgium and that was pretty much the only way I would make it into a pro team. So I gathered my savings and bought a ticket on a flight to Brussels. I went to Rafael's to say goodbye, as he had been a good friend to me. He had a leaving present for me. A full carbon-fibre bike! I was amazed. I thanked him endlessly and promised I'd pay him back one day. He laughed. I piled into a taxi and was taken to the airport.

I arrived in Belgium in February 2006 to snow. Everyone I was introduced to wondered if I could stand the weather but none realised that it's often freezing in Colombia due to the altitude. I settled down and found an apartment with an old man called Fred. I was naive then and didn't realise the extortionate prices he was charging me. I set about training and entered for my first race within 3 weeks.
It was a shock. I was used to easy starts in the flat races in Colombia (which were often not taken seriously) but straight away my legs were screaming at me, attacks going left and right. I hadn't prepared myself for the racing. I knew that I could outsprint them all but I realised I'd have to work hard to get to the finish. I pulled out with 2 laps to go.
By April I was out of cash and down in the dumps. Fred evicted me and I was out, looking for a place to stay. On the bike I met a rider, Klaas Sys, and we got to talking. I told of my predicament and he assured me there would be a place to stay where he was lodging.
I learnt a lot from Klaas. He told me I'd need a job. I got one digging gardens. He told me it was too strenuous and found me a job delivering, which meant I got training from my job. He taught me how to race and how to win and we trained together all the time. He also taught me how to swear fluently in Flemish (God verdomme!) and I picked up the language well. We shared the same race programme and he explained how to ride the cobbles because, despite my good bike-handling skills and the fact that he wasn't a great cobbler himself, they were far from the dirt tracks I was used to back home.
Come June, I was learning fast and Klaas was reaching peak fitness. We rode a kermesse near Brugge on the 13th. Klaas had ridden it before and decided he'd use it to train for the National Amateur TT Championships which were coming up at the end of the month. He said he'd kill himself in the break and that I might as well benefit by sitting in his wheel. He missed the decisive and had to bridge across, me an inch off his tyres. We caught the break and he was straight on the front, flying. There was no way the bunch would catch us. He told me to sit in and wait for the sprint.
Klaas cracked with 100 astonishing kilometres gone and 50 or so left. I did my fair share in the group and just followed the moves, not initiating any of my own. Coming into the sprint I was 4th of 6th. The 2nd rider jumped on the right by the barriers and I caught his wheel. I accelerated past him and took the win by 3 bike lengths.
That win persuaded Klaas' club to let me ride for them. He won the amateur TT champs as he had wished and I began winning more and more, by waiting for the bunch sprint. I also got used to the cobbles and started to love them. In August, I forged free to take a solo win on the pave.
September was the last race of the season and it was Belgium's biggest amateur stage race. 3 flat stages, one with minor cobbles, and a TT. I won the first 3 after the club had pulled them back to bunch kicks and Klaas won the TT and with it the overall. The club was over the moon. What a year!
7 days later the telephone rang in our apartment.

The consequences of the phone call were many but the main one was that we both had jobs for the next season. We had caught the eye of the Pole Continental Wallon team (who are currently sponsored by Bodysol) and they had decided to sign us. We were the teams last 2 signings as they saw the talent in Klaas and they needed a sprinter in me. The team had procured a big signing in Rik Verbrugghe, the hilly rider/TTer who was surplus to requirements at Cofidis and had found a team to lead in ours. The team lack anyone after him so I should get a chance to lead on the cobbles as well as in the sprints.
I'm feeling even stronger this year and I think I can have a good year on my first rung on the pro ladder.
The team will be riding mainly one day races all over Belgium, in the hills and on the cobbles, and a few stage races. Sadly, our first race is March so I'll have to be restrained for a month or so. Klaas accompanied back to Colombia in January and showed that he is an amazing climber and, coupled with his time-trialling, he could become a great. I thanked Rafael again and handed him a brand-new carbon-fibre bike.

Beverbeek Classic
My first pro race and I can't say it went according to plan. I was given the leadership with the Polazzi brothers as 2nd choice options.
Jeremy Burton went in the break and drove it for most of the day, even going solo at the end, only to be caught with 8km to go.
Coming into the finish I was well placed but I had been muscled towards the gutter by Kristof De Zutter. The 5km to go archway was approaching and it ballooned out into the road. I had nowhere to go. I bounced off it and felt something hit me hard in the back. By the time I was up the pack were out of sight and everyone around me was looking dazed and slow. I raced to my bike but Dennis Flauhaut told me to wait. He said it was over, to relax. We rode gently to the finish.
I heard that Fabio Polazzi had ridden through the chaos to a fine 8th. I congratulated him and mounted the team minivan.

I apologise for the lack of screenshots - I was looking for a great 3rd with Polazzi (a 65 sprinter) but he got caught on the line by a big group and I wanted to see where he came. Without thinking I clicked 'Go to race results page'.
Don't worry there will be screenshots on future reports

Le Samyn
Le Samyn is the biggest race I've started yet, with 7 ProTour teams joining me on the startline. The race should be decided in the tough finishing kilometres, although in the past it has come down to a sprint.
Rik Verbrugghe is planning to attack on the finishing hills while I am the sprinting option if he can't get away. The others will protect us and try to cover breaks.
The start of the race was absolutely mental. We sent Michaël Polazzi with the first wave of attacks but Predictor, Lanbouwkrediet and FDJeux were being incredibly vigilant on the front. Break after break went and were brought back, with over 50 riders attacking and the first 30km ridden at 48km/h. We were feeling the burn and were glad of the respite when 5 riders were allowed to go.
We reached the finishing circuits with the break 3 minutes ahead. We were travelling at a steady pace and slowly cutting down their lead. On the climb before the last cobbled section, Rik made his move.
However, Chocolade Jacques were flying on the front of the peloton and he was caught as we hit the pave. It was their that Cofidis played their card, Staf Scheirlinckx going on the rampage.
After the confusion of the cobbles Scheirlinckx had a clear gap. And, for the first time in the race, the leading teams were left looking at each other. Predictor took it on but by then Scheirlinckx had over 30 seconds. Starting the sprint he had it sewn up.
I went for it a little early in the sprint, which was a very disorganised affair. I ended scrapping with FDJeux's Christophe Detilloux.
Scheirlinckx took the win in front of a charging pack.
At the line Detilloux got the better of me but I was pleased after the catastrophe of the Beverbeek Classic, finishing a creditable 6th.
Rik rolled in 50th, our next best placed rider.
