Welcome to the 6th edition of the GP Lugano. Branded as a hilly classic it doesn't feature the most demanding parcour. At 188 km it doesn't stand out for its length and the harder climbs are all in the first half of the race. The easy finish therefore lends itself to a bigger group contesting the win. Which means sprinting ability becomes far more important.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | McCarthy | 70 | 67 | 82 | 80 | 75 | 65 | 74 | Kelderman | 69 | 70 | 81 | 79 | 74 | 66 | 71 | Müller | 70 | 67 | 80 | 76 | 71 | 66 | 73 | Edmondson | 70 | 69 | 79 | 75 | 72 | 70 | 76 | Borges | 69 | 69 | 79 | 73 | 71 | 70 | 79 | Hirschi | 71 | 77 | 79 | 78 | 78 | 66 | 75 | Kwiatkowski | 70 | 76 | 79 | 71 | 73 | 65 | 72 | Lagane | 70 | 70 | 78 | 70 | 71 | 76 | 77 | Tesfatsion | 68 | 76 | 78 | 68 | 72 | 69 | 78 | Teuns | 68 | 75 | 78 | 73 | 73 | 66 | 72 | Eriksson | 72 | 67 | 78 | 78 | 74 | 65 | 76 |
If it's about the riders that prefer the uphill terrain then these guys should be the ones to feature. Kelderman and Borges could roll some attacks to put the others under pressure. Some others like McCarthy or Hirschi would probably like to work with those two. On the other hand someone like Lagane might be content to wait it out. Müller and Edmondson also have sprinters in theirs teams while Eriksson might be already relegated to a domestique role.
| FL | MO | HI | ST | RS | SP | AC | Demare | 72 | 66 | 79 | 74 | 71 | 81 | 80 | Ovsyannikov | 74 | 61 | 68 | 75 | 72 | 79 | 78 | Kulikovskiy | 73 | 64 | 71 | 70 | 73 | 78 | 79 | El Sabbahi | 77 | 64 | 69 | 72 | 76 | 78 | 77 | Van Asbroeck | 73 | 51 | 69 | 72 | 69 | 78 | 75 | Contreras | 72 | 65 | 68 | 73 | 75 | 78 | 80 | Bertilsson | 72 | 53 | 68 | 70 | 69 | 78 | 75 | Ackermann | 72 | 65 | 77 | 75 | 71 | 77 | 80 | Norbert | 75 | 67 | 71 | 75 | 77 | 77 | 75 |
Now on to the sprinters and there is no bigger name for hilly sprints than Arnaud Demare. Tryg are fully behind him even bringing someone like Ovsyannikov to do a lead out. Kulikovskiy is also someone who could survive the hills and he should be Sony's sole leader. El Sabbahi is slightly slower in the finish, but he has a very nice FL/RS combo that could help him out. UBS will need to decide if Van Asbroeck is actually their leader, same with ISA-Hexacta and Contreras. And I'm hoping Tafjord can prioritize Ackermann as this should be a perfect parcour for him.

This is our win goal for the season because I decided that I didn't want an OR goal
Meurisse not mentioned in the preview but that's not really concerning for me he has his way to create magical moments even when the preview articles don't want to pay attention to him
Thanks for the preview rod!

Any point(s) would be a nice surprise.
Depending on the result we might bring Page next year.

Thanks for the preview, red! Though it's not a good sign when none of our riders is mentioned in a goal race preview Let's hope Oliveira gets a top 5 nonetheless...

Taking a chance with Kuli to see if his decent hills skill can give us an unexpected result.
Thanks for the preview!

This is another race where Tesfatsion can really prove whether or not he's deserving of future training. In this field, unless it goes to an actual sprint finish, he should be in the Top 10 for sure, maybe more with his comparatively quick spr/acc. Teuns can hopefully provide additional points.
Thanks for the preview!

Great race, great report, thanks for that one Fabi, incredible to read!
Congrats to TMM on a fantastic win for Lagane, loved how active our guys were in the race and Meurisse adding another top 5 to his palmares is great although not quite the win we needed for our goal!

Fun race to follow, thanks for the report Fab. It would have been cool if Müller could have cracked the top 10, but at least we're in the points. Congrats to Manx.

Great ride by Narvaez, undoubtedly his best of the season, no shame in losing to Lagane. Nice work by Daniel in the break as well.
Thanks to Fab for a great report, despite the geographic issues. Had me convinced Narvez was going to collapse so was very relieved when the final picture came.

A very fun race to watch here. Always fun to see a strong hill/sprint find some success. Congrats to Podium!

Why the fuck did I not send Bagioli here? What an oversight. Especially with Narvaez doing well too (which is great to see), very similar riders do Bagiolo probably would have done quite well.
Congrats TMM, Lagane doing the things expected of him. A good win
Thanks for the report!

The Kulikovskiy experiment didn't work out. Maybe if Shiki had not joined the break, he could've finished higher. We did have better candidates for the break too!
Thanks for the report and nice to have you back to reporting Fab

First of all thanks to Fabi for a great coverage of the race! Then also congrats to TMM for a very nice win from Lagane!
For us it's another near-miss in the end. Oliveira in 7th is fair enough, but missing another team goal by 2 places (or 100 meters according to the pictures) is just a bummer after nearly 2 seasons of doing this kind of thing ...

@wj and @kb
I should've just skipped on all the sprinters

What an extensive report! Thanks Fabianski.
Would have liked to see us in the break, but great performance from Nikiema makes it less important. Loved to see him attack for the win in the final kilometers, even though it might cost him a position or two in the sprint.
