A team effort on this one - the preview comes from SotD, Abhi will be on the mike for Stages 1 and 2, I will cover the last 3.
Welcome to Norway for the annual edition of the Tour of Norway, which by now is a long lasting event, trailing all the way back to 2013, where Matthias Frank won the first edition. Since then we have seen top timetriallists perform well here, with a solid combination of timetrial qualities, aswell as puncheur capabilities.
We travel from Sandefjord, along Oslo and Drammen amongst others through the Fjelds of Norway in a spectacular scenarie.
Last season Eddie Dunbar won the race ahead of Yoann Paillot and Bonaventure Uwizeyimana. Every single one are back, trying to land more succes. Dunbar in particular should be a very strong contender, if not the main threat.
But there are other rider types here aswell, let's have a look.
Name | FL | SPR | ACC | Enger | 73 | 81 | 78 | Kalaba | 74 | 79 | 79 | Adomaitis | 75 | 79 | 78 | Rodenberg | 74 | 79 | 79 | Lutsyshyn | 70 | 79 | 80 | Boudat | 73 | 79 | 78 | Walscheid | 73 | 79 | 79 | Hayakawa | 73 | 79 | 79 | Harrison | 72 | 78 | 81 | El Sabbahi | 77 | 78 | 77 | Kulikovskiy | 73 | 78 | 79 | Zingle | 75 | 78 | 78 | Mareczko | 74 | 78 | 77 |
Sondre Holst Enger on home soil is on paper the strongest sprinter present, and he could be looking for a very good start to the race with two relatively flat stages.
Behind him is a long list of riders at aproximately the same level, so it could be up to the daily form, the leadout trains and luck to determine which teams will leave the race empty handed, and who will come away with a solid points harvest.
Name | FL | MO | HI | Vakoc | 71 | 71 | 81 | Müller | 70 | 67 | 80 | Borges | 69 | 69 | 79 | De Plus | 72 | 77 | 79 | Koretzky | 70 | 68 | 78 | Teuns | 68 | 75 | 78 | Paret-Peintre | 72 | 76 | 77 | Mayer | 68 | 69 | 77 | Calmejane | 74 | 71 | 77 |
The race also presents a number of solid puncheurs, that will fight for glory in the last two stages. But they will need to take quite some time to ensure the timetriallists won't get the better of them. Riders like the mentioned will surely hope to make the best of the stages, and a rider like Paret-Peintre could be dangerous if allowed too much leeway, as he's not a shabby timetriallist either. Speaking of which.
Name | FL | TT | RS | Dunbar | 69 | 82 | 77 | Durbridge | 72 | 80 | 72 | Howson | 71 | 80 | 74 | Beniusis | 71 | 80 | 73 | Paillot | 69 | 79 | 73 | Cataford | 74 | 79 | 75 | Van Moer | 76 | 79 | 78 | Kmieliauskas | 73 | 79 | 70 | Norsgaard | 73 | 79 | 75 | Knotten | 72 | 79 | 71 | Haugard | 72 | 79 | 77 |
From the list above we find some of the natural favorites, not all of them, however. All of them should be top candidates for a brilliant 3rd stage ride though - and if fortune favors them, most of them should be able to survive a couple of hilly stages towards the end. In particular if they are not ridden very hard. Dunbar is the number one favorite here, but from the field behind the gap is slim to none from the first 10 participants.
Name | FL | MO | HI | TT | Dunbar | 69 | 77 | 76 | 82 | Paillot | 69 | 69 | 70 | 79 | Cataford | 74 | 72 | 70 | 79 | Van Moer | 76 | 61 | 70 | 79 | Kiriakidis | 68 | 74 | 73 | 78 | Ioannidis | 67 | 75 | 73 | 78 | Ferreyra | 72 | 72 | 72 | 78 | Powless | 72 | 78 | 72 | 78 | Potocki | 71 | 71 | 72 | 77 | Daniel | 75 | 67 | 72 | 77 | Vangstad | 74 | 72 | 70 | 77 | Fraile | 67 | 74 | 70 | 77 |
The list of pre-race favorites isn't particularly large, but the list of outsiders is enormous! Eddie Dunbar is by far the strongest rider in the peloton, and should take a firm victory. Riders like Paillot, van Moer and Daniel will all need for the hilly stages to be ridden somewhat controlled, albeit with a hard average pace.
Riders like Powless, Kiriakidis, Ioannidis, Ferreyra, Potocki and Fraile could do with a bit more explosive racing on the final two stages, as they should be able to keep up with the puncheurs - atleast to a degree where their advantage on the timetrial is sufficient.
But it is a very open race, and we can't wait to see what happens!

First chance to see what Howson and Cataford can do in the ITs this season, where they are among the favourites. Wold have to agree with the assessment that Cataford is the more likelier of the GC contenders while Howson should be in contention for a better placing on Stage 3. Hopefully both can hang on in the hills. Hoping for a fluke showing from Kuli in one or both of the sprint stages.
Thanks for the preview

Thanks for the preview, SotD! Let's hope you're right about APP's chances as a dark horse. If we're able to make the last two stages hard enough he (and maybe even Oliveira) could be in contention for some good GC results, otherwise it could be a rather low scoring race for us.

I think Wouters has a better shot than Zingle in the sprints, we'll see how the game will play it out. Vakoc is another trump card for a stage win. For GC I don't expect anything.
Thanks SotD for the preview

Probably a race that will hurt our PPRD, but you never know.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Really excited for our home race!
Would be a dream to see Holst Enger in the leaders jersey after stage 1 and 2.
I will follow this race closely.
Thank you SotD, Abhi and Ulrich for the coverage of this race! |

First big test for Eddie. Probably the race that suits him the most in his schedule, but also comes with all of the pressure to perform well too. Fingers crossed he can go back to back - we’re gonna be in need of any and all points here I think.
Thanks for the preview SotD!

Cattaneo not mentioned anywhere in the favorites. Hopefully a surprise is in store for him!
Kalaba could nick a nice stage result as well.

Great preview, thank you all 3 for the efforts.
Let's see if we can suprise everyone here and sneak away with some decent points.

Thanks guys
Brilliant result from Koumpetsos here to take 3rd in his first ever real chance to ride for himself. Not quite as brilliant to lose Spanopoulos here as he was a good outside bet for a decent result. He has done rather well in those kind of races before. Atleast Kiriakidis and Ioannidis was aware at the front.

The sprint stages look like our best chances for success. That is if we stop insisting in trying to pull a leadout for Hayakawa. We don't have anyone on the team capable of doing that role. FFS it's Eritrea all over again. Just let Tomohiro do his thing without getting him to a wind wall 1km from the finish. Get it together guys!
Congrats to Zalgris!

We won, but at what cost Beniusis lost any chance of GC result, I guess it's Kmieliauskas time

Their lead was 56'30" at its peak.
Darn, peloton let that one get a little out of control but they made the catch.
Lost a few guys to the split but nobody important. No drama on the first two stages is how we like it. Nice to see Walscheid chipping in for Kraftwerk, he is pretty consistent.

Another solid sprint from Koumpetsos here. I wonder if that stage 5 could be interesting for him, given how Well he performs on the flatter stages.
Top bad he isn’t training eligeble in the future. Would have been a very cool rider.

Very poor TT from both our guys. Now to hope they don't mess up the decent GC spots.
Congrats to Eden and thanks for the report Ulrich!
