Welcome to Eritrea for the Tour of Eritrea, a C1 category stage race where PCT and CT climbers meet for the first time this season. Sam Oomen (Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo PCTeam) is here to defend his title. He's again one of the favourites here, backed by the Belgians Maxim Van Gils and Laurens De Plus. Louis Meintjes (Bralirwa-Stevens) is another name who is returning, after a second place last edition. Local hero Natnael Tesfatsion is also on the startlist for the African-Belgian team. Although the bookmakers tend to go for Brazilian Caio Godoy (Team UBS) and Warren Barguil (Specialized) as biggest challengers for Oomen. Godoy finished 11th in PTHC's Volta a Portugal earlier this season. Barguil did one place better and finished 10th.
We find three additional riders in last year's top10 who are returning with Mark Padun (Team Popo4Ever p/b Morshynska), William Chiarello (Llapi-Vita) and Jaka Primozic (Trans Looney Tunes). Primozic was third in Volta a Catalunya behind ofcourse Jorgenson and Lunke. Tryg-Eni could have a duo leadership with Tobias Halland Johanessen (13th in Portugal) and Michal Schlegel (21st in Portugal) in the mix. Matteo Jorgenson (Newton Foundation p/b Zwift) is dominating the C2 circuit as expected, winning GC in Catalunya and TOME. As outsiders we also find the Portugese duo Joao Rodrigues (Everesting) - 5th in Portugal and Rafael Reis (Benetton Bimex Cycling). Suranga Ranaweera is the GC hope for Ekoi - Le Creuset, where Thibaut Pinot will think back with nostalgia about his past results here. Pinot won in 2019, and finished 3rd in 2016 and 2017. Last but not least there is Richard Carapaz (Zain-Omantel). He warmed up with three second stage places in Tachira and Catalunya and a podium spot in TOME GC.
From a sprinter's POV there is the opening stage in Asmara that suits them perfectly. All eyes will be on local boy Elias Afewerki (Benetton Bimex Cycling). At first glance he seems to miss a leadout, but maybe he can surf some wheels along the way. We also note Tomohiro Hayakawa (Everesting) - Tour of Qatar stage winner, Madushanka Perera (Team UBS), Alexandr Ovsyannikov (Tryg-Eni) - 5th in Milano San Remo, Bram Welten (Newton Foundation p/b Zwift), Riccardo Minali (Zain-Omantel) and Jakub Mareczko (Lierse SK - Pizza Ullo) as main contenders.

Thanks for the preview, Laurens!
We're hoping for a GC top 10 from Ranaweera and a good sprint result from Hodeg in stage 1. Both of them being rather down the list of favourites (if on it at all) also means we expect the rest of the team going for the breaks.

It's going to be hard to repeat last year's success. Thanks for the preview!

Very tough start list for c1. I'm hoping Godoy can get on the podium, but it will be tough. Thanks for the preview!

Skipped this one because I figured it wasn't as favorable to the punchier guys as some other races. Others disagreed with me so that might have been a misjudgement, still a pretty deep field I am happy to miss out on.
Oomen going back-to-back seems like a good bet. Be interesting to see how Jorgenson can do among the bigger boys.

Dzama mixing it with a stage podium and Naud making a BotD appearance we take those for sure, thanks for the report!

As expected, nothing noteworthy to report from the African lions yet. S2 might fit Carpenter decently, but I actually hope Seboka and Manfredi lose time. That way, there's at least a small chance one of them will be allowed in the BOTD on S3, and somehow secure top 10 in the GC, as it's our sponsor objective.

Bit late to the party but Dzama finishing on the podium stage 1 has to be mentioned once more

Really positively surprised by Penasa, wasn't expecting him to finish in the lead group on a hilly stage. Set himself up well to take a GC result in the closest thing we have to a home race, against some pretty formidable opposition. Excited to see what stage three holds!

Barguil attentive and at the front, would have loved another podioum but I'll be more than happy if he keeps this up tomorrow! Thanks for the report and congrats to Oldfardh on the win!

Big Sam delivering again for us! Unless tomorrow is a total disaster, this is going to be a good race for us.
Thanks for the report, any chance the KoM ranking could be added?

Genius if it works, stupid if it doesn't. Jorgenson with a bad blunder there. Not quite sure what he was thinking there.

Had a giggle when I read Sunderland and Kennaugh were performjng a leadout for Hayakawa. That would be a story to remember had it not gone predictably wrong.
Stage 2 was kind enough for us, lets see if we can strike something before the end of the race.

Congrats to Ollfardh for a dominant performance by Oomen! Also thanks to Abhi for the nice reports!
It's been a rather unspectacular race for us, but Ranaweera 7th and Pinit 13th in the GC make for some nice scoring and that's good enough for us.

Well, the depth allowed us to finish 2nd in the Teams Classification and got 3 riders in Top 25 (shame that Robov fell short of being the 4th rider) + 8th in KOM for CFH. A bit disappointed that KHJ was invisible - was expecting him to be in the hunt in Stage 2, but it wasn't meant to be. But no one is perfect and he'll have his chances to shine. While the ranking points aren't that much - they could be the difference at the end of the day.
Nice reports Abhi and congrats to Ollfardh and Oomen.

Barguil dropping out of the top 5 here is a tad bit annoying but great race from Oomen! Thanks for the reports!
