Le Samyn - Discussion
Nemolito
Welcome peoples! As the CT caravan is headed to Denmark for the GP Herning, The next Belgian cobbled HC race Le Samyn is also on the calendar. Why is it called Le Samyn, you ask?

1968 was the year the Belgian race was organized for the first time. At that time, the race was still called the Grand Prix Fayt-le-Franc. This name refers to the village of the same name, where the finish of the race was also located, in the province of Hainaut. The first edition was won by Frenchman José Samyn. The 23-year-old rider won another stage in the Tour de France a year earlier.

A few months after his victory of the GP Fayt-le-Franc, however, fate struck for Samyn. During a fairground race in Zingem, East Flanders, he collided with a spectator. Samyn suffered a brain injury in the process, which eventually became fatal to him as well. A particularly sad story. After the death of the rider, the organization decided to rename the GP Fayt-le-Franc the GP José Samyn. Later that became simply Le Samyn, which is also the current name.

But enough history, time for the present now. Let’s have a look at the profile and race favourites.

This might be an HC race with a perfect C2 opportunity to score in Denmark as well, Team Würth MODYF believes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/twm.png Zepuntke can repeat his fourth place from Le Samyn last year (or do better), whereas his domestiques have to handle the GP Herning. The best cobbled domestique he brings with him to Belgium is the local rider Vangheluwe with 69 cobbles. Will that be a problem?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/spz.png Kasperkiewicz meanwhile proved he was a nice buy by winning his first cobbled race of the season in Flanders, tomorrow he has the chance to repeat that feat in Wallonia. The cobbled sectors are not the longest, but last year and the years before did show us the race could be more than selective enough. Just like in the Omloop he preferably doesn’t reach the finish line with some of the better sprinters.

Those sprinting cobblers were the numbers four to six in the Omloop recently. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/eko.png Daniel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/brc.png Stallaert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/trg.png Ovsyannikov all had a decent race, but nevertheless we can imagine each one of them hoping to do even better tomorrow. Stallaert has won here in the past, Daniel has had three top-10’s but never came closer than a sixth place.

Speaking about doing better, that’s certainly what pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lpu.png Gamper and manager Ollfardh will be hoping as well. Omloop het Nieuwsblad was far from a great season debut for the Austrian, so he has to make up for something tomorrow. Timing his move right will be crucial.

The original Crabpack, Lotto – Caloi, had a top-10 finisher in the Omloop with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/lot.png Chatarunga, and will be looking to copy that result with either him or Vanbilsen. The new Crabpack, ELCO – ABEA, had some great depth in Omloop and is back with several cards to play. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/elc.png Summerhill in theory the best cobbler, but the different Greeks with a slightly lower cobbled stat all showed themselves and their capacities earlier this week, so once again it would be no surprise to see either one of them finish above the American, and, who knows, the rest of the peloton.

Numbers two and three of the Omloop, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/ubs.png Jacobs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2024/Micros/tir.png Debesay, are also back and will be looking at another podium place if possible. Feel free to scout the whole startlist below to see who else could be scoring well tomorrow, and good luck to everyone!

Need a podium here after the Omloop disaster.

Guess we can hope for something similar to Omloop here. Hoping all three of our stronger cobblers can get points this time.

Thanks for the preview Smile

A route that should suit Kaspa incredibly well with the challenging hills towards the end of the route, let's hope he makes it 2 for 2! Thanks for the preview!

I think the standard sentence for all C1/HC cobbles races this year will be: I'll be happy with a Top 5 from Stallaert and a Top 20-25 from Teggart, both of which should be realistic but far from guaranteed. Hoping for the best! Thanks for the preview Smile

Hmm, this is going to be a hard race for us, hopefully we can get some depth points here. Thank you Nemo!! Smile

I hope to see as many ELCO guys towards the front as last time. I really do hope that one of the guys will make a jump for a top 3-5 result though. Punching slightly above their wheight could be needed.

Thanks for the nice preview, Nemo!

As cunego said it's probably going to be repetitive to state our hopes as well, but Daniel getting into the top 5 of the C1 and HC races should always be on the table - and maybe he even gets the occasional podium spot or even a win. In any case we're looking forward to all the cobbled races, though a win by a Frenchman to honour José Samyn would be especially nice Smile
We also obviously wouldn't mind some more depth scoring by our young supporting cast.

Brilliant result! We managed to get both depth and top points. Really happy that it’s Kortsidakis who was trained in the off season.

Pretty amazing to see Boutopoulos being aggressive early aswell.

Not bad. Not what we hoped for, but looking at the big 2 it could've been a lot worse as well. Daniel doing really well on the cobbles, and Elco seems to be wrapping up the title early on. Thanks for the report Imladrik!

Twice now that Stallaert wasn't really able to capitalize on his superior sprinting in a smaller group, I guess his overall weakening from his first decline just shows. Still, 6th is okay. Teggart didn't contribute points, but he might've been crucial in controlling the bigger groups throughout the race, so probably still good to have him here instead of in Herning.

Congrats kb, always nice to see Ekoi succeed. Comiserations to Specialized and Würth in particular, didn't expect such a result especially from Kasperkiewicz. But as an opponent, it's good to see he isn't invincible. Thanks for the nice report Imladrik!

Thanks to Imladrik for reporting another win for us, you surely wouldn't mind to report all our races?

A great result from Daniel obviously, though I was a bit worried when Louvel followed the attacks instead of him (great effort from Matis nonetheless). But Maxime definitely is worth his big wage for now, hopefully he just continues his cobbles season this constantly good!

Not the result that we hoped, but at least we made some moves.

Thanks Imladrik for the report and congrats KB with the win! Smile

Nice work by Hecht, for a while thought he might steal some points but not to be. There are 8 one-day classics we are in that we don't really have a rider for and need some luck. The good news is 4 of them are already done, the bad news is we haven't managed to score a point in any of them yet.

Thanks for the great report Imladrik and congrats to KB, Ekoi having a pretty nice season so far.
