Welcome to the 10th anniversary edition of the Tour of Ukraine! After a five year stretch as a HC race, it returned back to PTHC status last year and was promptly won by the PT Individual Rankings winner himself, Taylor Phinney. The American is back again and looking to become only the second two-time winner in the race’s history, following Aleksandr Pluchkin.

As those names suggest, the race is one for the stage racers. Elite time trialing is a prerequisite, but then you also need to the climbing skills to be competitive in both the steep second half of the prologue and the finale of the only road stage of the race, one for the puncheurs. Put it all together and you have a chance at a really nice points haul.

If you ask the bookies (and you actually can!), there is one big favorite. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney is here to defend his title, and it’s going to be tough to stop him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen was the runner-up last year, almost a whole minute down. In the offseason, he’s been in the wind tunnel working on his time trialing, but the American still has the upper hand in prologues and climbing. Still, if one man can stop him, it’s likely the EA Vesuvio leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Dunbar is the second biggest challenger in a race perfectly suited to his strengths. As long as stage 2 isn’t super favorable to strong climbers, a podium place should be his objective. Those strong climbers among the top favorites include last year’s third place pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png Haig as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal, who’s been steadily climbing the ranks here, from 24th in 2020 to 11th and then 4th last year, collecting 3 white jerseys along the way. He’ll hope to continue the upward trend.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mck.png McNulty, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Geoghegan Hart, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Conci and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Foss are the next tier of stage racer vying for a top result. In contrast, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge is the best time trialist among the pure puncheurs. He finished 3rd here two years ago, a result which seems unlikely to be repeated, but if he shines on day two, he can still end up high in the GC.

There is a variety of riders and rider types in the second row competing for the Top 10 to 15. Time trialing specialists who climb decently well include pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zpc.png Fraile, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Munton and Minions duo pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Dennis and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Brown. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Shikai leads the third tier of stage racers, a formidable lieutenant to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Bernal. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/jur.png Stüssi – who has a pronounced prologue weakness that might hurt him –, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/lpu.png Oomen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Almeida and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Faglum Karlsson are also in that category.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Bilbao7066786476707460

Some very strong puncheurs are here to contend stage 2 – and only stage 2 for the most part. This excludes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Bobridge, of course, but top stage favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/evo.png Lopez also has both the strength to generate a sizeable gap to the pack and the time trialing skills to salvage a decent GC result if he does.

The likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/min.png Kinoshita, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/zal.png Moscon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/trg.png Kron, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/coc.png Gebrezgabihier, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Romo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Bilbao can go all out for the stage win, though as we get further down the list, the actual win feels more and more unlikely. On the other hand, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aau.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Valter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ziz.png Borges are in the complicated situation of being both an elite puncheur and teammate to a stage racer going for the GC. It’ll be interesting to see how the teams play this.

In addition to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Phinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/eav.png Wirtgen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ino.png Dunbar, all of whom can pull off a stage win in an ITT, there is a deep field of time trialists looking for decent results. And some might even have their eye on the GC, too. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Mullen is the best on pure flats and an okay puncheur, but even on a less selective stage 2 – which all of these guys have to hope for –, his poor climbing might be his doom. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pum.png Ganna, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Paillot or pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/yor.png Oliveira could fare a bit better, while the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/ced.png Lammertink, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/pol.png Viennet and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/aab.png Gonzalez Salas will be going for stage glory only.

It’s a deep, deep field of time trialists behind them, too many to go through them in detail and the list could have been longer still. And then there are also prologue specialists pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/mol.png Chavanne and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2023/Micros/snz.png Kopfauf, although it remains to be seen how they cope with the steeper parts of the prologue here. Many more domestiques and second-tier leaders can hope to score some points by climbing into the Top 20, too. To comb through them all, just have a look at the startlist:

Could've been Cattaneo here but Dennis will have to for the GC fight. Or like the other hilly stages Bjerg might be able to hang on to this one as well. Kinoshita here for stage glory only.

Thanks for the preview!

I'm hoping for a top 5 from TGH and some good depth scoring from either my stage racers or TTers. I'd be surprised if Phinney doesn't win again.

Thanks for the preview.

First (and last for a while) hit out for Dunbar, with probably the scariest startlist he’ll face this season. With the 22’ shenanigans so far I’d be content with a top-10, but a podium would be amazing. I wonder how this game version will handle stage 2? I can see it causing no real selection, or being a total massacre. Something in between would be ideal Smile

Phinney should have this locked down, but Wirtgen will take an upset and finally get one over him I reckon. Hope new TGH and Foss go well, very cool riders.

Thanks for the preview Smile

Win goal. Why did Phinney have to come  I’m hoping Bobridge has a cracker of a race! Still exciting as we have potential winners for every stage as well as an outside chance for the GC. Will be very interesting! Hopefully we can come out with at least a stage win!

Slava Ukraini!

I'm cautiously optimistic that particularly after this Paris-Nice showing, Ganna can play a bigger role in the GC than this preview insinuates.
Day 2 definitely is steep towards the end looking at the short stage length, but if he can keep his losses within a minute to the good hybrids and within two to the stage favorites, this can really set Filippo up for a great scoring season.

Not sure if it's realistic to hope for Haig to repeat his podium here. I rather assume it ain't. Obviously needs a great form in the TT and ofc good positioning in the climbs.

Not expecting much, hope we can score some stage points here

Not expecting too much here, but would be nice if Paillot or Faglum Karlsson could get a decent GC result. Hopefully we can limit the losses on stage 2 as much as possible.

Mostly here for the odd point but not really expecting anything from it.
Thanks for the preview and good luck to everyone

Well, I absolutely wanted to have this band - planning to get a great stage racer. I didn't get one, and hence the expectations are rather low. Still hoping for Stüssi to be in the mix for a Top 15 result (hoping TT skills will matter more for S1 than PRL).
Otherwise, Errazkin could try something on S2, and hopefully at least one out of Bissegger, Brunel and Küng will not lose too much time, so they could get a decent result in the end. But yeah, without a top-level leader it's also very well possible that the team gets completely ignored and we'd end up with a disappointing zero-pointer.

I guess Phinney should win this race once again, although Wirtgen looks to be on fire as well.
PCT-wise, McNulty should be clearly the strongest rider, and should rather easily take another white jersey here.
If the hill stat matters for the prologue, as someone seemed to suggest pre-season, then Bobridge might be in for a surprise, but I struggle to see 34 y.o. Bobridge do as well in a PTHC race as 32 y.o. Bobridge did in HC two years ago.

Thanks for the preview, and good luck everyone Smile

Ulrich Ulriksen
Top 10 goal here, which should be realistic but only if S2 is selective on MT, otherwise could get overwhelmed by all the TT guys, particularly since McNulty isn't great in the prologue. Young rider jersey would also be nice.

A very strong field which was to be expected! Hoping that Conci can continue his good form to push for a Top 5 result although that'll be challenging. Cosnefroy likely to struggle with the more uphill sections but hopefully he's in the mix in the TTs. Unsure about bringing Borges as it may have been smarter to focus only on the GC but fingers crossed he can provide the goods too.

Thank you for the preview and looking forward to a hotly contested race! Will be interesting to see how the AI goes with us in particular Wink

I guess that's an okayish start, but I won't really know if it's a good race until the end.

I guess 4 in the Top 40 is a pretty good result, especially with Stüssi cracking the Top 20. Hoping the team will now focus on Stüssi or Küng, given that Errazkin is a bit further off (he should go in the breakaway, though). As Ulrich, hoping Mo will be the main skill needed on S2, so Stüssi could climb up a bit.

Congrats to MOL, Phinney still beasting such stages!
Thanks for the report to Abhi.

Perfect start, right up there at the pointy end is what we needed going in to tomorrow. There’s no beating Phinney or Wirtgen here so this is a great result! Congrats Jaxika, deserved after being shafted recently.

Thanks for the report!

Not the start I wanted at all… Bobridge highest in GC but 30 seconds back. He will need an amazing stage 2 and a really great TT to bounce back into a higher position. We will see!
