La Tropicale Amissa Bongo Preview
The 2022 edition of La Tropicale Amissa Bongo brings together a strong mix of PCT and CT teams for this C1 race. La Tropicale returns to the calendar this year after a skipping the 2021 season, while also improving a ranking up from C2 in 2020. The reigning champion Theo Reinhardt will not be in attendance in 2022, but for good reason. This year’s parcours has 2 individual time trials when the previous edition had 5 sprint stages. This year’s race will still have 3 opportunities for the sprinters and flat specialists, but pure spriners will struggle if they cannot compete in the TTs
The race begins in Akieni for a 6.0km prologue to create a GC hierarchy from the start. There’s a slight drag to the line, so maintaining power all the way to the finish will be crucial to gaining the leader’s jersey on day 1.
Stage 2 returns from previous editions of this race and provides the most climbing meters of the race overall. One should expect a competitive breakaway here to gain KOM points and challenge for a breakaway win. This should be the best opportunity for non-time trialists to bring back time if the stage can be made hard enough, but it should come down to a sprint in some capacity.
Stage 3 should also feature the sprinters without too much difficulty. Coming in at only 111km, the breakaway should not be given much leeway and the sprinters should be ready to fight for the stage win. There is an interesting kicker in the final 8km that should allow a late attack or force some important tactical decisions. Positioning should be key.
Stage 4 enters the capital of Gabon for a flat circuit for most of the day. There’s a few slight drags, but riders should expect a very hard race given that it is the last road stage ahead of the final TT. Sprinters will be licking their lips based on the run-in to the line, but anyone who hasn’t benefited from the race yet will be trying to find some sort of success.
Stage 5 should be the GC determiner if the race goes to plan. A 21.0km time trial around Libreville, this is an opportunity for the specialists to show their craft. The gaps on stage 1 will obviously play a factor, but any favorite on a great day should be able to make up at least 15 seconds – a gap that most should expect to hold from the prologue. This course is almost pancake flat.

With time trialing the most important quality of this race, it’s no surprise that the favorites for this race all share strength over the 21.0km final stage. Durbridge stands out as the clear favorite up top due to his quality at both the prologue and the longer TTs. If Durbridge is off his game at either, the Assa Abloy due of Paillot and Gonzalez Salas will certainly be ready to hold the leader’s jersey. Dennis also stands out as a threat to take the opening prologue and hold one with the extra strength brought by the leader’s jersey. Outside of those four, the strength of the leaders is relatively equal across the favorites.

The strongest individual sprinter here is likely Halvorsen, however this is an extremely sprint heavy field. In addition to the sprinters above, there are at least 20 other sprinters with 75 sprint. Many will be brought into lead-out trains of course, but we have to imagine some very hectic and congested sprints. Indosat Ooredoo has two if the best sprinters with Howard and Suryadi, so they should be able to control the final leadout. Tafjord Kraft also have two strong sprinters with Bertilsson and Waersted.
Four sprinters in this group also have strong potential in the prologue and could try to combine a high prologue finish with sprint results for a GC result. Keough leads that group with an 80 prologue. Kalaba also could grab their spot, as could Vingerling and Waersted.

While many of the top time trialists and sprinters also show up in the favorites for stage 1, the top prologue rider is Chavanne. He along with this entire list will be using their strength to take the first leader’s jersey and try to hold that throughout the flat stages to come.
Nat. | Name | FL | TT | ST | RS | SP | AC | FG | PR | | Marildo Yzeiraj | 77 | 60 | 74 | 74 | 62 | 71 | 85 | 66 | | Benoit Cosnefroy | 76 | 78 | 78 | 81 | 69 | 69 | 81 | 78 | | Olivier Lecourt De Billot | 75 | 64 | 74 | 73 | 61 | 74 | 81 | 68 | | Alex Wohler | 77 | 76 | 72 | 71 | 71 | 72 | 80 | 76 | | Welle Jallays | 74 | 74 | 67 | 72 | 60 | 61 | 80 | 74 | | Remco Evenepoel | 74 | 72 | 74 | 76 | 64 | 70 | 80 | 72 | | Torkil Veyhe | 80 | 65 | 66 | 71 | 56 | 78 | 80 | 69 | | Kim Magnusson | 74 | 58 | 70 | 69 | 65 | 73 | 79 | 58 | | Mario Gonzalez Salas | 70 | 80 | 74 | 76 | 61 | 54 | 78 | 80 | | Mark Dzamastagic | 78 | 65 | 76 | 72 | 76 | 78 | 78 | 65 |
With just flat stages between the two time trials, the rest of the race must find opportunities to gain time and glory. Yzeiraj is the most likely to join the breakaway or go off on a late attack and their strong flat should be a huge help their. Cosnefroy and Gonzalez Salas could make use of great prologues and some surprise attacks to gain bonus seconds either at the finish or throughout the stages. It should be exciting to see which of these riders makes use of their attacking nature to find success in Gabon.
Let’s see who is able to make use of their strengths and their teams here in Gabon!

High hopes for Kalaba and Dennis. The former has a good chance of taking the GC lead somewhere while the latter will have his chance at the start and end.

Be nice to see Keough get a decent result in a prologue but he has failed against much weaker fields before. Then need some luck in the sprint lottery.

Our first gamble with Dunbar’s TT training, he has a better chance lucking a result here compared to a stage race that doesn’t suit him like Osterrich or Portugal considering the crazy stage racing strength in PCT this season.. I figured with a good day he could easily achieve a top-5 here compared to an anonymous 10th-20th in Osterrich or Portugal. We have a strong team here with Wolf + Arif Prayogo also for the TT stages and Howard for the three flat stages. I’ve made a mistake though and have sent a team that’ll probably try and make a train each day which surely will work against us. Howard has also been beyond terrible all season, but every race is potentially the race that changes that.
Thanks for the preview!

Waersted can do some trouble on the mass sprints, but due to the TTs we have no chance on any major GC-placements.
Thank you very much seancoll! |

First race for us where Rekita will try to defy the PCT's top TTers, and he's indeed quite high up on the favorites list. However, with PCM's random daily form features, it's quite a gamble to only send one TTer here - Marchewka just didn't have enough RDs to take this one as well...
Hoping for Chavanne to win another prologue here, although those are even more random than the longer TTs, but he's been doing pretty well so far.
And then it's Stepniak for the sprints - but we'll see if he actually competes, given the plethora of similar sprinters here. I'll take any points from a 50k rider, though
Thanks for the preview and good luck everyone!

Very high hopes for this one!
Jakobsen should be very competitive in the sprints and I'd like to see him fight for the Points classification win.
Cosnefroy & Thomas should both be able to fight for strong GC positions. Thomas making a reduced split with the sprinters and Cosnefroy attacking late could both be surprise favourites for the win.
Looking forward to this one!
Thanks for the preview and can't wait for your great and detailed reports

Obviously a key race for Durbridge (just like Arab Tour), where the GC win/podium must be the goal. Anything less than a podium should be considered a bad result, to be honest. Yes, we know the TT randomness, but no excuses here!
Bring it on

Great, our streak of shitty daily form goes on... Prologues can always see some surprise winners of course, and maybe we already had our share of luck in some prologues this year. But Chavanne should still never ever do that bad (Matsangos has -15 PRL and was 1" behind...). But honestly, I prefer Rekita being the stronger of the two today, and 10th is actually a good result for him. But he'd better have a decent day in the long TT now, else we're really throwing a good first half of the season out of the window...
Congrats to Indosat on a sick day - I'd love to have that kind of luck in a TT-heavy stage race for once as well ^^
And thanks to Imladrik for doing the race, and for the first report.

Prologues are very random, so this isn't that bad from Dennis. Kalaba has a nice shot at yellow tomorrow.
Thanks Imladrik!

Solid start for Durbridge and Scotson. Obviously always hoping for a TT win, but a 3rd place is far from disappointing.
Thanks for taking over the reports, imladrik! Highly appreciated!

A somewhat surprising result but it’s worked out for us I guess! Thomas 2nd is a great start and hopefully he can continue that form throughout and into the later TT. Cardona with a huge over performance to take 7th!! And then Cosnefroy underperforming to lose 10 seconds.
Bit of a mixed bag for sure! Congrats to Indosat! Now for the sprinting

That’s certainly one way to start a race
Absolutely stoked, what a ride from Wolf! His first ever pro win against some big dogs like Chavanne and Durbridge is a sight to behold. We never get these kinds of results with a totally unexpected rider winning, what a strange feeling! Dunbar finishing 5th and having a good shot at a decent GC and Arif Prayogo finishing in 6th behind Dunbar is amazing. Howard has 3 chances to shine now as well, hopefully the TT boys can keep their positions heading into the final TT, what a result that would be!
Thanks for the report! Hope Sean is ok and will return at some point.

Lets go Baroncini! Love to see it now he has to keep a hold of that jersey for two more stages! Vingerling also mixing it well in the sprints, maybe he gets an even better finish on the next two stages and secures us some more points! Thanks for the report! Also weirdly scenic final stretch to the finish line!

Bad prologue, bad 2nd stage... it's definitely the kind of streak that makes you want to run away from the game. But at least it looks like it's not red's fault, we seem to be shit with every reporter in those C1 races lately.
Congrats to Zara, for some reason Jakobsen just keeps on being really consistent.
Thanks for the report.

Can’t have it all I guess we made a complete mess of that sprint - absolutely terrible. Hopefully without the pressure of yellow they can bounce back tomorrow and Howard can actually do something.
Congrats LLS! Jakobsen just goes from strength to strength.
Thanks for the report!

Good to see a sprint train rewarded with a win!!
Hofstetter with an amazing job to go as far as possible to ensure Jakobsen would have enough left in the tank to hold on for the win.
Hopefully we can keep this going
Thank you for the report and for the congrats!
