Tour du Faso - Discussion
Luis Leon Sanchez
Tour du Faso - Preview

The Continental Division goes to Africa for a 3 stage race in the small West-African country of Burkina Faso.

18 Teams are here made up of 13 teams from the CT and 5 from the PCT, 2 of which are strongly focused on Africa who will want a strong performance in front of their local fans.

All 3 stages are flat and between 120-130km in length. The opening stage has some cobbled sectors but only closer to the end so the sprinters may have a chance. The 2nd stage doesn't have any cobbles and will therefore be the opportunity for the sprinters. The final stage will be the most decisive with cobbled sectors throughout.

2020BaugniesMaesSbaragli

The profile of this race suggests that strong cobblestone riders will succeed while the history reinforces this but also suggests that those aggressive or strong sprinters may also experience some success here.

GC Favourites

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bwt.png Andrew Fenn is the best outright cobblestone rider and will fancy himself in this start list.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/caa.png Yves Lampaert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/pns.png Christoph Taubel are most likely to push Fenn for the win and will themselves expect to be on the podium.

Of the remaining top favourites, there are 3 riders who are strong sprinters who we will also highlight. This trio is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/cct.png Ramon Domene, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/bee.png Tim Merlier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/t3a.png Darren Matthews. All 3 of these riders will be hoping for less selective finishes on stages 1 and 3 in order to compete for the overall win.

The Sprinters

He's not the best pure sprinter but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2022/Micros/anz.png Tom Scully is likely to be the top favourite here for Stage 2. There are numerous other riders who will be competitive both on stage 2 and potentially through stages 1 and 3 also.

Couldnt be here this year sadly despite it being one of my favourite races on the calendar. You never really know what you're gonna get! Would love to see our former rider Puccio pull of a miracle here!

cunego59
Always a cool race. I'm hopeful that Okbamariam can do something here. Probably not compete for the podium, but if we get close to the Top 5, I'll be very happy. In such a dense field, that's always tricky, though. El Sabbahi is probably not good enough for a good result in the sprint, but who knows!

With Monk and Scotson we come here for a notable result, which is a nice bonus for a C2 entry (if it works as planned). Both hardly do cobble races as our leaders, obviously, so it's a certainly a rare opportunity to deliver something. That said, Scotson just had a nice result in Arenberg, so maybe he can keep his good form.

Reported on the chaos but never actually been here I think, will be interesting to see it on the other side this time. Sweeck, De Witte and Marcos should all at least finish the race, but we'll see how high.

Happy that this madness is no longer mandatory for CT, so good luck to all those daredevils trying their luck in Burkina Faso Pfft

Hopefully we can score good points here to support our decent start to the season.

I always have good memories of the race having won it before. One of the good watches for a neutral, although hopefully I don't need to come here next season Pfft

Love this race. Don't think we can do much with Ariesen here, but let's hope for the best Smile

I don't know what it is about this race but it's the third time in a row now that we don't perform up to par. Okbamariam really should have been in that first group but poor positioning made him miss it. Oh well. Maybe he can still climb a bit, but that gap is pretty large.

tsmoha
Meh.. Monk missed the crucial split. Maybe he can try something special in the final stage then..

At least we showed us in the early breakaway. We should do it again then.

wildwind
Surprisingly 4 riders in Top 10. This is the best performance as a team this season.

Fabianski
Wow, that's a crazy finish by Ariesen, definitely didn't see that coming! It almost looked like in the "good old days" without radio - it was just as if the chasers had forgotten that he was still up front!
A great win for the Crabpack for sure - but also a fantastic depth result for Bianchi, congrats to both!

And thanks for the report, LLS, was quite fun to follow Smile

tsmoha
Argh... We had our best possible breakaway riders in there.. two riders.. might have missed the crucial acceleration then.. at least we ended up on the stage podium though. Surely not a bad result after all!

And even more important - Culey went to take the points lead. That would be a very nice bonus with probably no more chances for a notable GC result!

Marcovdw
Kuboki would have had a good result, but we made a choice not to be in the breakaway which was clearly wrong

Jay Major wins a sprint!!!! .... for 7th after the break was miles ahead... our high moments this year are not particularly high Pfft

Oh man, that's incredible! What a completely unexpected win. Lovely stuff by Mengoulas, who I reckon has a chance to remain in white, if he's lucky with positioning and so on. El Sabbahi also with a super strong performance, even if it wasn't for a significant result.

We really needed that after a string of not so great performances all over the place. Even if it's not the most points, it's still a very nice boost. Thanks for the report LLS!

Great to see an African team win in Africa, congrats to Bralirwa Smile
