Herald Sun Tour
--
Preview
One of two C2HC races running concurrently, the Herald Sun Tour marks one of the final CT stage races of the year. It’s one of the oldest races on the calendar going back all the way to 2009, and yet, it still has not had any rider winning it more than once. That will not change this year either, with reigning champ Tom Dumoulin up in PCT and no other former winner on the startlist. So, an opportunity for a new rider to etch his name into the history books here in Australia.
It’s really a fairly straightforward race: four sprint stages, and a long-ish 20 kilometers time trial to decide the GC. The first stage ends with a short uphill ramp and there are some demanding climbs on day two, but those should ultimately cause no issues for the sprinters.
| FL | TT | RS | | FL | TT | RS | Cosnefroy | 76 | 78 | 81 | Van Winden | 71 | 77 | 65 | Cruz | 75 | 78 | 72 | Andersen | 70 | 77 | 74 | Li | 75 | 78 | 68 | Marchewka | 65 | 77 | 75 | Thomas | 73 | 78 | 73 | Castrillo | 77 | 76 | 72 | Campenaerts | 71 | 78 | 73 | Stoenchev | 74 | 76 | 73 | Mottin | 68 | 78 | 73 | Vandousselaere | 73 | 75 | 70 | Downey | 73 | 77 | 74 | Noia | 73 | 74 | 70 | Oram | 73 | 77 | 72 | Richardson | 71 | 74 | 69 |
Cosnefroy is the top favorite on paper, his great flat/res combo lifting him above similar competitors. Aramco has another iron in the fire with Thomas, as well as the two runaway favorites for white in Castrillo and Noia.
But the field at the top is very crowded and lots of riders may fancy their chances at the top spot of the podium. Glanbia, as we’ve come to expect, is here with multiple options. Cruz is chief among them, but Downey and Oram have chances as well, while Richardson should at least be in play for a Top 15-20 spot.
Mottin and Campenaerts are podium contenders, too, and Crabbe bring Vandousselaere as backup. Van Winden is another legit contender, as is BWT duo Andersen and Marchewka, which just shows you how close everyone is. Stoenchev is the third BWT rider on the list, but probably a tier below his teammates.
| FL | SP | AC | RS | | FL | SP | AC | RS | Kump | 73 | 80 | 79 | 72 | Redecker | 73 | 77 | 78 | 67 | Matthews | 76 | 79 | 79 | 67 | Kristoff | 72 | 80 | 74 | 66 | Avelino | 69 | 81 | 75 | 63 | Bauhaus | 74 | 78 | 75 | 65 | Bennett | 71 | 79 | 79 | 68 | King | 75 | 78 | 73 | 71 | Keukeleire | 71 | 79 | 77 | 66 | Korosec | 71 | 75 | 78 | 71 | Drapac | 70 | 79 | 77 | 63 | Ciolek | 71 | 79 | 73 | 63 | Abdul Halil | 68 | 79 | 77 | 66 | | | | | | Losch | 73 | 78 | 79 | 68 | Barbier | 75 | 77 | 79 | 71 | Marin | 74 | 78 | 78 | 73 | | | | | | Ranneries | 69 | 77 | 80 | 63 | | | | | | Altanzul | 72 | 78 | 75 | 73 | Weber | 72 | 76 | 75 | 67 | Kreder | 73 | 77 | 78 | 71 | | | | | | Walscheid | 71 | 77 | 77 | 72 | | | | | |
The sprinter field is split, with some of the top CT guys currently in Poland at the Course de Solidarnosc, but many of the best sprinters of the division are still here. Kump leads the way following a very successful Euskal Bizikleta, he should be seen as the top favorite. But few sprint fields are ever clear cut, and he’s got a lot of challengers. Matthews, Avelino, Bennett and Keukeleire are perhaps the most capable, but they’re far from the only ones, as for instance Drapac and Abdul Halil are close behind.
As you can see, many sprinters have great leadout men, but while the roles seem to be clear for most, we might see some controversy at BWT, with Losch and Barbier both having decent arguments for the leadership role. This is not the case for Marin and Ranneries, who don’t bring any secondary options with them at all, and Altanzul’s role is unchallenged as well. But here, we’re getting into the second tier of sprinters anyway, with him as well as Kreder and Walscheid only having outside chances for top results.
If we assume that the finish on stage one will need some puncheur qualities, Kreder is suddenly much higher on the list, being the only one who comes even close to Kump as a punchy sprinter - although the latter’s top favorite case becomes even stronger uphill. Keukeleire might be another benefactor, to a lesser extent, while Drapac would be the most harmed by even the smallest of ascents.
Some hopefully interesting racing lays ahead of us here. Have a look at all riders who will take part:

This is our win goal and it's a race we're definitely capable of winning. Cosnefroy is definitely the top favourite so hopefully he can live up to that in the Stage 4 TT. Thomas also a very capable rider who gives us a second option in the GC.
Castrillo and Noia definitely capable of scoring good points as well to secure a good points haul.
Abdul Halil here as our sprinter but our target is the GC so anything he manages is a bonus.
Thank you for the preview cunego and good luck to all, although not too much luck

In hindsight I should have brought a sprinter to this race. Curious to see how my time trialers Campenaerts and Vandousselaere will perform.
Good luck everyone and thanks for the preview cunego!

Snap!
You have quality , Glanbia have quantity!
Just hoping one of our TT guys hits the right form on the important day and hasn't lost time anywhere else!
Cruz is our best shot but Downey and Oram have been pretty poor all season so they can salvage things here.....

First time we have had the horses to merit any mention in the preview for this race, so that is nice. Would be awesome for Van Winden to have a great TT and go out with style in what is likely his last ever race. But would settle for a mid-tier GC result.
Walscheid an outsider in the sprints but maybe he can pick up a few points.

White jersey for Andersen is more than we could have dreamt for!
If Ranneries had timed his finish as well, this stage would be near perfect.
A good start to a good race.
Thank you cunego! |

Realistically we came here to target the GC with Cosnefroy and Thomas so winning the opening stage is a shock!
Abdul Halil has done alright for us this season with a couple 2nd places, including a recent Zabel, but this is his first stage win which is awesome for him, the team and our confidence going into the rest of this race
Thank you for an exciting report cunego!

I liked Walscheid's positioning just didn't allow for the uphill finish. If he can do the same on a later stage we might get something out of it.
Thanks for the preview.

Congrats to Aramco DP.

Thanks for the reports!
Very good opening for us and I believe we're now above the 3k points mark. Also nice to see that the leadout from Redecker worked on stage 2.

Unfortunate that Abdul Halil couldn't follow up his heroics but don't mind losing the GC lead so that my riders can relax a bit and save their energy for the TT.
Thanks for another great reports and no surprise to see Kump taking more stage wins

I guess Avelino is ready to retire, and done with sprinting?
Or, we are setting our leader up for the TT? Im so lost

After a poor sprint from Abdul Halil yesterday, none of our riders in the Top 20 today. What it does mean is that Cosnefroy and Thomas conserved their energy in preparation for the TT tomorrow.

What a weird sprint. Good recognition from Redecker to get some personal glory and good recovery from Kumpi get the third place. Should mean a green jersey for him come end of race!
Thanks for the report!

Figured Walscheid wouldn't sprint every day and looks like he blew his chance on Stage 1. Congrats to Hello Fressh on two more wins.
All in for Van Winden having one last great day now.
Thanks for the reports.

I tried out a new format for the TT in my everlasting quest to make TTs more interesting It's a good bit more work, so I'd appreciate it if you let me know if it's something you'd like to see again or if it's maybe too convoluted/crammed compared to the regular format.
