Uppsala Classic - Disscusion

UPPSALA CLASSIC - PREVIEW

upsalack.se/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/uck_logo.png

Uppsala, situated 71 km north of Stockholm, is home to Scandinavia’s largest cathedral, Uppsala Cathedral, which until the 19th century was the site of the coronation of the Swedish monarch. The MG circuit will crown a rider here as well, the winner of the Uppsala Classic, and this particular victory will send that one cyclist into history pages as this is the first edition of the race.

media.bikemap.net/routes/5208581/staticmaps/2a6c7250-1a04-4140-8491-af3b6528f092_400x400.jpg

The 194.3 km of Uppsala Classic are all flat and although some small bumps might be glimpsed on the profile the bookmakers favor heavily the sprinters for the win. The race will start from Uppsala and head towards Alsike where it turns back towards Uppsala. Before reaching Uppsala again the peloton will cross the Flottsund Bridge over the Fyris River, close to where it flows into Ekoln, part of the Lake Mälaren, and then follow the river to the initial starting point. This circuit of approximatively 38 km will be covered 5 times before the winner will be decided at the finishing line in Uppsala.

Categorized as C2HC and with a mandatory presence for the Continental teams required by the MG organizers means that all the 3rd division teams are here. None others are joining them, but this hardly takes away from the glory to be had and the boasting right of winning the first edition of Uppsala Classic. But who will take that place in history? The sprinter field is packed, as it is only suited, so let’s look at the list of favorites:

The list is crowded as we can easily see, but if this season proved something to the fans it’s that a sprint finish doesn’t guarantee a win to the top favorites. As a matter of fact it also proved that team tactics, motivation and internal fighting for the leading role can alter the predictions and what is considered a second tier rider might jump on the occasion and grab the win. Is this scenario possible here in Sweden?

It would be a mistake to forget that predicting the final outcome of a cycling race is nothing like shooting fish in a barrel and there’s a certain possibility for some brave riders to steal the victory from the heavily favored. A successful breakaway or a daring attack on the final kilometers cannot be discarded and there are several riders who could seize such an opportunity if such a chance presents itself. Is such a scenario in the cards here?

Fantastic preview.

I fear another Rás here with too many sprinters spoiling the broth for Glanbia but it's all a bit random so maybe one of them can take a top 5

Good luck all

Great pre-race read that! Thank you very much for the preview Smile

Looking forward to this one! Hopefully it comes down to a sprint but from there it's praying that our team puts together a good train and brings home the result for Jakobsen who has to be one of the top favourites.

Good luck to all Grin

Thanks for the very comprehensive preview. Good to see Hecht and Van Winden popping up in the third section.

Got a strong flat team here so hopefully we can control the attacks and Keough can put in a decent sprint and win the Swedish lottery.

What the hell was that? (and I don't just mean the Britney references!)

But also woo hoo! Haas delivering another surprise and Nelson bringing home the bunch.

By far, Glanbia's best pprd race of the year!

Wow, race of the season perhaps? Shock At least in CT Pfft

Very exciting racing, pretty rare for a flat one. I wouldn't want this as part of a stage race if it has potential for big gaps, but it works great as a classic Grin
