Welcome to only the 4th edition of the Jelajah SKL stage race. The race debuted in 2018 and has been on the calendar ever since as a C1 category race. A unique race, it starts with a prologue, and ends with an epilogue with a "flat" and hilly stage thrown in between. The flat stage has actually been used as a platform to attack in the past with a late climb before the finish. The hilly stage is quite similar actually except it has two climbs and both are a bit harder. Both time-trials are obviously important, but the bonus seconds in both road stages can be game changers in terms of the final GC. The race gives chances to many different riders and we will have a new winner this year.
With that said let's look at some of the favourites:
| FL | MO | HI | RS | AC | PR | Izagirre | 71 | 74 | 81 | 72 | 64 | 77 | Kelderman | 70 | 71 | 82 | 75 | 72 | 70 | Boswell | 70 | 71 | 80 | 73 | 76 | 69 | Dunbar | 69 | 77 | 76 | 77 | 68 | 77 | Rosskopf | 73 | 73 | 75 | 71 | 70 | 77 | Brändle | 75 | 76 | 71 | 73 | 69 | 79 | Eiking | 71 | 69 | 80 | 74 | 76 | 67 |
In part 1 we will look at the puncheurs and time-trial hybrids.
Izagirre is pretty much a prototype of that hybrid, but he has a flaw. His low acceleration might hurt him on both road stages and he most likely still needs to put time into other riders. Kelderman and Boswell are both typical puncheurs that should do a decent job limiting their losses in the prologue. Dunbar, Rosskopf and Brändle will all primarily bank on their TT skills, especially Brändle. Eiking is a good puncheur, but needs to gain time on others to offset his weaker TT.
| FL | HI | RS | SP | AC | PR | Kalaba | 74 | 69 | 72 | 79 | 79 | 78 | Boudat | 73 | 68 | 74 | 79 | 78 | 78 | Zhao | 74 | 65 | 74 | 77 | 81 | 78 | Ackermann | 72 | 77 | 71 | 77 | 80 | 68 | Kennett | 75 | 65 | 76 | 79 | 78 | 78 | Keough | 73 | 62 | 73 | 79 | 79 | 80 |
In part 2 we will look at the sprinters, most of them very good in short time-trials.
Kalaba is a good sprinter with a great prologue stat and pretty durable on the hillier terrain, the same as Boudat. Zhao has great acceleration to offset his slightly lower hill stat. Kennett is a very strong sprinter, but his problem might be that his team asks him to work as a leadout on the sprint stage. Everyone is a good prologue rider and needs to gain a lot of time there. Especially Keough, the best rider in this discipline here. Ackermann on the other hand is not good on the TT bike, but he's a good sprinter and also good going uphill. He probably needs to gain time on both stage 2 and 3, but he looks capable of it.
| FL | RS | SP | AC | PR | Keough | 73 | 73 | 79 | 79 | 80 | Brändle | 75 | 73 | 60 | 69 | 79 | Haugard | 72 | 77 | 57 | 67 | 79 | Dillier | 70 | 77 | 61 | 62 | 79 | Fiedler | 76 | 71 | 63 | 58 | 79 | Kalaba | 74 | 72 | 79 | 79 | 78 | Boudat | 73 | 74 | 79 | 78 | 78 | Zhao | 74 | 74 | 77 | 81 | 78 | Kennett | 75 | 76 | 79 | 78 | 78 | Mullen | 75 | 74 | 60 | 70 | 78 | Rajapakshage | 72 | 72 | 50 | 69 | 78 | Dumoulin | 71 | 76 | 65 | 67 | 78 | Li | 75 | 68 | 75 | 75 | 78 | Kwok | 75 | 71 | 73 | 74 | 78 | Arif Prayogo | 73 | 75 | 64 | 64 | 78 | Golovash | 72 | 69 | 73 | 76 | 78 | Balloni | 73 | 71 | 63 | 67 | 78 | Hofer | 73 | 72 | 63 | 68 | 78 |
There is a whole raft of prologue specialists here. We won't mention everyone, we do list quite a few, but given the nature of short time-trials don't be surprised to see some other names near the top of the stage results. Keough is the #1 favourite though. Other favoured riders are Brändle, the UBS duo of Haugard and Dillier and the older, but experienced Fiedler.
| FL | MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | Kennaugh | 77 | 58 | 65 | 71 | 82 | 81 | Zhao | 74 | 58 | 65 | 74 | 77 | 81 | Kalaba | 74 | 65 | 69 | 72 | 79 | 79 | Boudat | 73 | 51 | 68 | 74 | 79 | 78 | Keough | 73 | 60 | 62 | 73 | 79 | 79 | Ackermann | 72 | 65 | 77 | 71 | 77 | 80 | Matthews | 76 | 59 | 65 | 67 | 79 | 79 | Appollonio | 74 | 57 | 66 | 66 | 81 | 78 |
Kennaugh is a top sprinter here. Not looking like a GC option, he'll really want to come away with a stage win. The other big sprinters here are also GC contenders and will want to place at least in the top 3 to gain those important bonus seconds. Searching mainly for a stage result will also be Matthews and Appollonio.
| FL | MO | HI | RS | SP | AC | Eiking | 71 | 69 | 80 | 74 | 68 | 76 | Boswell | 70 | 71 | 80 | 73 | 65 | 76 | Ackermann | 72 | 65 | 77 | 71 | 77 | 80 | Kelderman | 70 | 71 | 82 | 75 | 67 | 72 | Duchesne | 70 | 67 | 77 | 72 | 69 | 79 | Dyrnes | 68 | 72 | 78 | 73 | 65 | 77 | Müller | 70 | 65 | 80 | 71 | 66 | 72 | Palini | 69 | 70 | 78 | 68 | 68 | 74 |
Finally we have the puncheurs. Eiking has great speed, acceleration and uphill punch. Boswell is very similar, but Ackermann trumps both in sprint and acceleration. He should beat anyone in a small group sprint. That's why someone like Kelderman who is the best at holding his effort to drop the more explosive riders. Duchesne and Dyrnes may be dark horses, but they're both explosive with the latter being a decent climber also. Müller and Palini are another two riders to watch on stage 3.

If Brandle doesn't get smashed on S3 we should have a decent race.

Fiedler should hopefully give us a chance for two good results in the short TTs and Rosskopf has the opportunity to redeem himself after a more than rocky start to the season. Uwi and Hadi have been decent with depth scoring and Vendrame might be good for the hills, if he's treated as an important rider. Could be a very good race for us, but I wouldn't be shocked if we came away with very little. Thanks for the detailed preview, looking forward to the racing!

Zmorka finished second here last year. I decided to not come here. Meanwhile, he scored 24 points from the substituting races. #ManagerialMasterpiece

First race for Dunbar, considered Ukraine and hong king but after seeing how those played out I’m glad I didn’t send him to either. Hoping for a top-10 here and a very selective hilly stage, fingers crossed.

I think it is safe to say this is the only C1 race in which there is decent shot for a McCormick rider to win every stage. Obviously I don't expect that or even good results on every stage. Prolouges are very random, and these are short, the sprint gods are capricious and Boswell prefers to finish 5th.
Nevertheless I will be disappointed if we don't get something nice out of one of these stages and maybe a decent GC.

Finally a good result by Rosskopf! 7th is already a point for the stage, and he's the best puncheur so far, maybe alongside Fernandes and Barta. Bit of a pity that Fiedler misses a point by one place, and Uwi and Hadi could have done a little better, but overall still a promising result.

3 in the top-20 is a good result all things considered. Dunbar keeping himself in a great spot for tomorrow which will hopefully shed some of the sprinters and tt riders.
Thanks for the report!

We survived day 1, at least.
Nice to see Van Moer setting the standard also, while on loan.
Good luck everybody and thanks for the report

Fairly decent-ish performance so far. Perhaps our efforts should be prioritized towards Barta with Jacobsen and Kozhatayev acting as backup

I can live with 3rd from Keough, best performance by one of the sprinters. You can't win them all and at least he didn't flop all together. Lets hope he doesn't decide to sit it out tomorrow in what is a pretty reasonable sprint field.
Boswell loses 13 seconds, which doesn't seem cataclysmic.
Thanks for the report. Love the colored numbers, since Keough went early my eye was quickly going to the colors.
