SCIENTISTS are trying to stop the most powerful experiment ever – saying the black holes it will create could destroy the world.
Dubbed by some the Doomsday test, it will be carried out next week in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located 300ft underground near the French-Swiss border.
The machine is 17 miles long and cost £4.4billion to create.
When its switch is pulled on September 10, this atom-smasher will become a virtual time machine, revealing what happened when the universe came into existence 14 billion years ago.
New particles of matter are expected to be discovered, new dimensions found beyond the four known, as scientists re-create conditions in the first BILLIONTHS of a second after the Big Bang.
Experts even predict that millions of tiny black holes will be produced — baby brothers of the monsters gobbling up dust and stars at the heart of the galaxies.
Secrets
That is why boffins are now trying to stop the project with a last-ditch challenge in the courts.
They fear the LHC experimenters are tinkering with the unknown and putting mankind — and our whole planet — at risk.
The group responsible for the experiment, the European Nuclear Research Centre (CERN), says that these mini black holes will vanish as quickly as they are created.
But the anti-CERN brigade accuse the scientists of playing God, warning that no one can guarantee that the black holes will not survive, rapidly growing in size to suck the Earth out of existence in an instant.
But CERN, which includes several UK scientists, say their work is vital to unlock the secrets of matter that forms everything known in the universe.
In the experiment, atomic particles will be fired in opposite directions along the 17-mile long underground ring — the length of the Circle Line on the London Underground.
They will travel so fast that they make 11,245 trips around the tunnel every SECOND.
From the collisions, boffins expect to discover a fundamental bit of the atom, called the Higgs boson, that is expected to exist but which has never been seen.
Professor Otto Rossler, from the Eberhard Karls University of Tubingen in Germany, is one of the scientists mounting the legal challenge at the European Court of Human Rights against 20 countries which are funding the project.
He said: “It is quite plausible that these little black holes will survive and will grow and eat the planet from the inside out.”
A CERN spokesman said: “It will not be producing anything that does not already happen routinely in nature.”

Its one of those "Either a lot is going to happen, or nothing at all will happen and it will be all a waste" things. Either we will gain incredible new information about everything and be able to teleport across theh globe at will by 2020 or we will gain no new bits of science from it that we can enjoy. In best case though, bits of Switzerland will get eradicated

Im looking forward to the test. Its not going to blow up the world though. Its theoretically impossible at the size they are doing it.

My opinion in this is, turn on the damn thing, if the world is sucked by a black hole no one will ever find out and who cares then?

Theres is something close to 1 out of a million chance that it goes wrong.
Personally I think that that chance is to big conisdering the consequences.
A 4.4 billion project that could destroy the world...
But most likely nothing will happen

I like some of the letters sent into the Times:
Sir, It should be realised that because of the LHC’s location, any black hole that it creates will first destroy much of the European Union, including Strasbourg and Brussels, before its event horizon expands sufficiently to engulf Britain. We should be thankful for small mercies.

Sir, It is interesting that there is agreement that mini black holes could be created during the experiments at CERN (“Mysteries of the Universe will be solved, starting next Wednesday,” Sept 4) and the debate centres on whether they would be a risk.
As an engineer well versed in risk management, I appreciate that highly improbable events can take on significant importance when measured against the gravity of the risk and I am interested in the mechanism to reach rational conclusion in such debates. First, the experts at CERN have stated that exhaustive safety checks have been carried out and on conclusion there is no risk. Surely such deduction is based on evidence of known phenomena and state-of-the-art modelling, whereas I understand the whole purpose of the scientific work is to go beyond what is known to either prove theory or discover new phenomena to advance our knowledge. Simply put: if they are so sure as to the certainty of the outcome as to pose absolutely no risk why do we need to carry out the experiments at all?
Secondly, it is not without reason to speculate that other intelligent life forms should have achieved a sufficiently advanced development to make their presence known but we see absolutely no evidence. However, we have discovered a substantial number of black holes.
