Hello everyone,
As you have all seen, PCM.daily has experienced major problems which have proved pretty much impossible to fix. Especially the speed problems have been annoying and is mainly what has been keeping PCM.daly down.
And so what? Well, the speed problem is still not fixed. The site is still very slow (not right now, but most of the time), and we have had to remove several 'features' of the site just to have it run rather stable. With the slowness, I can't really be bothered to check the site since it takes ages to load it, and that's, of course, not the most optimal situation.
Question is: Is there any suggestions to what PCM.daily should do?
I've made some tests, and I've noticed that the site runs way faster in the next version of phpFusion (the content management system we use). The problems are that we can't convert the download section and we can't keep the design we have, because both are not compatible with the new version. At least not yet.
We could also convert the forum section to a phpBB-portal, so we keep all the posts, users and private messages. But that would mean we'd lose pretty much everything else since that's not convertable. Besides, if we did convert it to phpBB, why would people visit this site instead of the official forum which runs on the same system? Right, not exactly an ideal solution either.
Other than that, we could of course also just close it down. |

Can't we re-build the download section on another system and just upgrade to the next PHP-Fusion version? I'd be pleased to help if we do so. |

So if you go PHP Fusion, there would be no downloads section?
Couldn't we simply just make a section of the forum, named "downloads", have seperate sections like we do in the downloads section and admins would still keep it up to date, the only problem would be that they wouldn't be PCMDaily download links, just, f.e. FileFront links.
I think that sounds like a decent idea. There is probably some flaw I haven't worked out though...

For now we need to do a lot improvisations to make this work. But eventually we need to do something more permanent and drastic like either making the dedicated server work properly or move yet again. But will cost money im pretty sure our dear Mike cant be bothered to spend. Thats why he's suggesting that PCM.daily gets closed down. Which is of course not an option. So maybe its in order to do a donation-drive to raise enough to convince gim to make the effort to save it?
And Addy, the flaw with your plan is that people wouldn't have to register to download. If you made the downloads forum a place you could only see if registered it'd work-

Well yes, it would only be viewable to members. Like PPDB have only 4 sections viewable by the public and then about 20 other for members, we could have the forum viewable to everyone and then the downloads bit only for members.

Imo, Whatever happens, keep phpfusion.
Also - is there really much point in the latest addition to the side bar of 'Hottest Threads'. Myabe if its modified to take into account when the last post on the topic was, but for now its useless as 3 of the 5 topics are outdated.

I would love to help - unfortuneately I know absolutely nothing about this. I remember Crue talking about financial help at some point, and I would be very willing to make a donation to the site, if that helps it running.
I'm just a bit curious, since I don't know how this site works. What is the reason that one day the site runs perfectly normal then the next day, the site looks impossible to fix. And another thing, why is it we can't go back to how it was before the meltdown? Probably a stupid question but again I don't know much about this

A_Schleck: It's definitely not a stupid question, because I'm thinking the exact same thing - and it's pretty much what I have been thinking ever since it went 'down'. It worked one day - it worked perfectly for 1½ year - and the next day it's slow as a snail.
Why? I still don't know. I can't explain either why it worked pretty much perfectly yesterday. Maybe we are being attacked by some bots? Maybe not?
Waghlon: It's not the server. It performs like it should. Thing is .. if we could fix these speed problems, I'm sure we would not even need a dedicated server.
Anyway, to make it clear: I won't stay if this problem isn't fixed eventually. I just can't live with it. |

As a new member i was impressed about how deep and featurefull this site was. the looks were good it was orginased and really good activity. then suddenly now its all doom and ruin is it money you need or someone with knowledge? if its money i'd be willing to donate some cash, if you need someone to fix it i'd be willing to order pizza to whoever fixes it
a stupid question though: why is it so important that only members can download files? |

Yeah, the site ran perfectly for 1.5 years... and then all of a sudden it's running bad. This sounds like a scripting problem. Something has gone wrong, somewhere in the sql database, which makes everything very slow.
Often happens at PHPbb forums, when they become too large (too many inacitve users, psots etc). It's just like the drain pipe in your sink, when it becomes clodded up, you have a problem. I think this is the same problem |

that would be gradual. this was from one day to another.
I still think either someone screwed up a script that put a bucketload of garbage in the DB, or someone is attacking the site for fun

Can't be the first, because the site is also slow on a fresh install of phpFusion with the same database as now. |

then again, it's generally known within the webmasters world that phpfusion has it flaws and limitations. It's easy to use, but not very populair among that world |

Well, all this evidence and talking from Ruben makes it seem like we need a user culling. Out of 12000+ users, how many has actually logged in within the last two months afterall?

My amateur thought...I dont have mind if download section will be somwhere else.
Main thing is keep this forum running smoothly..
Donation?..shure. I dont have anything against it..after a active 1,5 year.
Keep it running..this one deserves it. |
