If he ends up being a road racer... what area can you see him being most successful in?
He's 6'4" and 170 lbs at the moment at 17 years old. He's already taller and heavier than "big George" Hincapie. I don't know how that ranks amongst pro cyclists... but it's probably already near the top end and he may not be done growing.
Obvioulsy, anyone hoping for a grand tour win is dreaming... not at that size.
Is he looking at primarily being a time trial specialist? Could he be an effective sprinter like his father? I don't know how tall Davis Phinney was. Northern Classics? Puncheur?
Just wondering what people think. |

If he's tough as nails and fearless and likes cobblestones he is a nice fit to become a Cancellara type. He's already an accomplished timetrialist at his level, I don't know about his abillity on cobblestones though. |

At his weight and height, time trialist.
I know there is Thor Hushovd who is actually heavier than Phinney, but Hushovd is a lot older and it is harder for him to keep in shape. I think Phinney is aiming to be a time-triallist. The best sprinters at the moment, i.e Freire and McEwen (used to be) are 139lbs and 138lbs respectively, and a damn sight shorter.
Just my opinion, but I think with his current stature he wil be a time-trialist, because he could be lighter at this age, he has the choice if his diet is right, but he has gone for more muscle mass, in order to be a better time trialist. (speculation)

He will be a great time trialist who will last in the mountains. His parents are athletically gifted. He has dominated races and he has been racing a short amount of time. and Mrfredthebob, he is certainly not rubbish he is a legend on the track and is great on the road. Tell me why he is rubbish.

Cancellara is great on the road, Taylor Phinney hasn't done squat at the professional level, so please, don't call him great just because he's American and a big talent with good blood.

I don't see him being a stage racer at his weight either. Cadel Evans, who isn't exactly the lightest stage racer ever racing, is 149lbs and 5ft 8.
Compared to current stage racers, with Phinney's height and weight into consideration, he is too fat (weighty/overfat whatever you want to call it).
Whereas time trialists like Rosseler who is 5ft 11.5 and 170lbs he fits in perfectly.

Kadel - Rafaa Chtioui? He rides for the Doha team now. So yes I do know what happened to him.
Anyway back to Phinney, while is it of course too early to tell know, based on his Track exploits I think that for now, it looks like he could become a decent time trialist

I agree with Matt, I think he will end-up being a Chris Boardman type, winning TT's, especially short ones on the road, but making the biggest splash on the track |
