Pilot - 1st May 2018 I’m about to step out onto the stage. I can’t believe I’m here in Italy! The birthplace of legends! Marco Pantani, Ivan Basso, Vincenzo Nibali and Gino Bartali. It is also home to one of the most beautiful races of all time! The Giro d’Italia! Home to huge mountains, amazing views and some of the best racing that has ever been witnessed. 2018 is the year of the youth. I’m a favourite at the age of 22! Would you believe if I told you that the other favourites are all under 24? It’s almost time to begin the coverage…

Alarm - 18th February 2001 “Darcy! … Darcy get up!”
I heard my mum yell from the kitchen as I got out of my bed. It was my very first day of school and I was so excited! I grabbed my towel and headed towards the bathroom only to have my older brother Jack push me out of the way and slam the door in my voice!
“Jack!!” I yelled, hoping it would have an affect … It didn’t
I decided to just go eat breakfast first. I walked into the kitchen and sat at the table ready for my favourite breakfast! Marmite on toast with orange juice!
After I had eaten, mum told me to go have my shower and get into my school uniform and get ready for family photos! Wow, my mum loved to take photos of us!
I walked into the bathroom and shut the door, scared and excited all at once. As I turned on the water I remembered something, something that I had forgotten that was super important!
I got out of the shower, got my uniform on, and walked to the kitchen all ready to go…

Fun fact: I was in the beginning phases of starting a story here a couple months ago called 'The Demise of a Champion' but (obviously) nothing came out of it.

School - 27th November 2008 “…Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve something!”
The words kept replaying in my head as if I didn’t understand them. I guess as a 12-year-old I thought I might have more to do in my life. People probably think I’m crazy but I swear every kid goes through this. The time in our young lives where we feel like we don’t have many friends or haven’t done a lot with our lives…Especially when the words floating around in my head came from a 12-year-old school captain who has already won nationals in the 800m and 1500m track running events.
It didn’t help that my brother Jack has already been signed to his first amateur cycling team, Kingsnorth International Wheelers. Granted he is 24 and I’m only 12 but I just wish I could do something with my life …
“Maybe I should start cycling …” I thought. Then chuckled at my own random thoughts. I could never be as good as Jack…
“Congrats on graduating little brother!”
Jack had snuck up behind me while I was in deep thought. I turned around and gave him a hug and said “Thanks” as sincere as I possibly could, but I was clearly jealous of him and I knew Jack could tell!
Suddenly, out of nowhere, Jack surprised me…

Club - 12th December 2008 “I have a present for you Darcy” Jack said as he walked out of the school hall with me after the Year 6 graduation.
2 weeks later Jack put his bike on the top of his car and we drove to a place in Nelson, New Zealand. Which was about a two-hour drive from where Jack and I were born, Takaka.
Once we arrived in Nelson, Jack stopped the car in front of track with the words “Nelson Junior Cycling Club” on a sign above it. We got out of the car and my 12-year-old self couldn’t stop smiling! Then suddenly the head coach, Brian Stephenson, rolled out a small Trek road bike that looked brand new!
“This is yours kid … treat it with care”
My jaw dropped! Brian and Jack were both smiling! I ran over and hugged Jack saying “Thank you!”
Nothing could ruin this day!! Or so I thought…
