Versus's (the American TV channel that shows cycling) Tour de France promotional page, it has a great message that we can all get behind, and has the great TV spot they are using on it. Go check it out. |

I really don't get the message. They start by saying basically F-U dopers, and F-U politics. So, let's kick the dopers ass and then kick the ass of everyone making the laws to keep the dopers out... Ad Contrarium Sensum
It just sounds like a new and more subtle "Let Levi ride"
But please correct me if I'm wrong.

Its saying forget the whole ASO UCI battle, forget all the doping scandals, and just watch some guys kick ass up the mountains of France. Thats a message I think the cycling world needs. |

It's not that simple. The race organizers will never give up any of their rights and the UCI, well, they have Pat McQuaid.
This is not a change that could or is going to happen in such a short period of time. I can relate to some changes in the cycling world but they have to be well thought out and implemented in the long run instead of quick fix solutions that will change a few things now but will seriously compromise the future of the sport.

But just pretend for the 20-odd days it takes to run the greatest sporting even on earth, and just watch it. |

It seems like they are saying: Screw everything, let them do whatever they want in the most grueling competition in the world and let's watch them cycle themselves to death.
I can not condone a campaign that in effect supports doping. What a disgusting website.

that's bullshit, we should fight doping, because sponsors and fans are leaving the sport which eventually will shut down professional cycling as we know it. |

Exactly. I completely agree. It all comes down to the future of the sport, like I said.

To me it reeks of "We make strong statements. We're rebellious, therefore hip and cool. yay. BUY OUR PRODUCT"

To me it says
F - U You French Bastards. You can try to discourage us from the tour but we don't care. We will come back even stronger. Because USA OWNS THE TOUR.
But I am serious.

oooooh that.
If by "America" you mean "Earth", then yes, you're right. Not all french, of course. a lot of them are very nice. it's just that the general snobbiness that is oh-so-stereotypical is unfortunately oh-so-true

I'm afraid I don't mind the French, just to throw that spanner in the works...
Its a bold advertising campaign by Versus, but it doesn't really appeal to why I watch the Tour - the dope and the politics make it a rollercoaster ride! B)
kidding of course!

I hope "us" doesn't refer to me and you - I'm not a masochist and I'm definitely not "pushing past the limits of pain and exhaustion". I'm in my bed, writing this |

hell no. Actually all around America people hate the French. We deserved it, cowardly refusing to kick Iraqis's asses because they were hiding MDW (you eventually found them somewhere by chance ?), then picking at Lance Armstrong as a revenge because he owned us at home.
What sore losers we are, really.
I don't really care about Americans, some are nice, some are not. Actually it's the same with my compatriots, there are fools and there are good people. Same can apply to any group of people...
But, hell, you're probably right, all Americans are cool and all French are stupid. Long live stereotypes, long live stupidity.

You of all people can't say a thing. What the french government is doing in africa is far worse, but hey, the media doesn't report it, so why should we care, right?

It's the same everywhere, but I mean what I said: all the times I've been to France I've noted a general snob, patronising attitude towards foreigners. And I hate it. Not everyone in France is like that, thank god, but most that I met are.

In Africa ? We're supporting dictators to get some stability in what were our former settlements, so that we can keep doing business with them and they keep doing business with us, as soon as we'll stop they'll do business with the USA. When capitalism meets democracy and human rights, well...
As for the second part, I agree with the patronising part. Generally speaking we tend to live in the past. In many people's mind France is still a rich country with welfare state, n°1 or 2 in Europe, thus they feel legitimate to patronise foreign people, I'd say especially Portugese one as Portugal was regarded as a "poor" country thirty years ago. The world has changed, but many people didn't notice it here, hope they'll wake up before it's too late.
But all that is kind of out of purpose here, I very much doubt that Americans cycling fans have anything against us because of that, mostly because of what I wrote above (French bashing before and since the second Gulf War, and Armstrong doped and winning). |
