[PCT] Euskaltel: Rankings & Goal Review
Luis Leon Sanchez
i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah237/jakstar21/Euskaltel%20HQ%20Banner_zps03bidau5.png

Welcome to the Headquarters of the Euskaltel team. The team is based around their supporters and those of Spanish Cycling in general. Alongside other Spanish cycling teams, the Euskaltel team continues in their quest to become a dominant force in World Cycling.

It is the 5th season that this team has been together. The first season saw our Mountain goats surprise everyone in the CT to seal a comfortable promotion. The second season saw our Mountain goats, led by Valls, struggle against much stronger competition and we avoided relegation due to disbanded teams. We realised that we would have to focus on all the disciplines which saw Valls, Bouhanni, Caruso, Roy and Cornu lead us to a much more secure 20th place in the final rankings. Last season saw Bouhanni, Van den Broeck, Cornu, Caruso and Le Gac manage to secure survival again with 19th in the rankings.

Euskaltel has been with the team for the last 4 seasons and this explains why the team is made up of predominantly Spanish riders. We still carry a French focus from when Air-France was a secondary sponsor. The remainder of the team is a result of the diversity which is required given the competitive markets of our main focus countries.

We move into our 5th season with a renewed optimism. The last 3 seasons in the PCT have given the team management more knowledge and experience which will hopefully help us secure a mid-table finish in the 2018 season. Euskaltel are a team representing a region of passionate cyclists and fans who would love to see the team back at the top of world cycling. The team is still establishing itself and is looking forward to the challenge in 2018!

Team Jersey

i.imgur.com/7Bj9zag.png

We have a new jersey created for us by the_hoyle who has also created our NC jerseys. As always he has done a fantastic job keeping the Euskaltel orange and a version of the Basque flag to ensure that the roots of the team are not forgotten.
Our Jersey over the last 3 seasons has been created by Jakstar22 but unfortunately he is no longer able to continue, we thank him for his services to the team.

i.imgur.com/SqEFlpl.png

This amazing jersey will be worn by our new Spanish Road Race Champion, Delio Fernandez. We hope we see a lot of this beautiful creation throughout the season.

i.imgur.com/LOd5jwS.png

And finally, this will be worn by Dominique Cornu in TTs this season so we definitely hope that this will be shown off on the top step of the podium.

As always, renewals provided us with a great chance to restructure the team somewhat. We finished last season with 25 riders who had an average age of 29.72, this was our first issue which was that we had a squad which would not be sustainable in the long term as we would need younger riders for the years to come. It is therefore clear to see that we released 11 riders who had an average age of 30.45 which means that most of them would be declining over the next couple seasons, if they weren’t already.

We are saddened most by the departures of Julian David Arredondo, Juan Sebastian Tamayo Martinez and Rafael Infantino. The three Colombian mountain goats have all been an integral part of the team’s development with Arredondo’s surprise Stage Race win in our first season leading to our promotion from the CT.

We also depart with three of the riders who were brought in last season to get some points in the Hilly races. We had big hopes for 35year old Frenchman Jérémy Roy last season who ended up having a decent season (but he is now declining) with the help of the 32year old Belgian Sander Armee and the 27year old Moldovan Sergiu Cioban who were just not cutting it in the PCT.

The two 28year old members of our developing sprint train have also been released. The Spaniard Enrique Sanz didn’t contribute as much as we were hoping to the team’s sprint train and so he has been allowed to go find a new team. The Syrian Nazir Jaser, who spent the 2015 season on loan in the PT, unfortunately didn’t manage to lead out Bouhanni the way we require him to so he too will be applying his trade
elsewhere.

The other Spaniard we released was 30year old Mountain goat Hector Duenas Nevado who did a job for the team but we feel as if he is not up to the quality we require.

Our final two riders that we have released are both of our French Time Trialists. 35year old William Bonnet has been a great servant to the sprint train but he has declined rapidly over the off-season. 30year old Ludovic Bret has had one season with the team but he is getting older and he did not contribute much to the team last season.

Of the 14 riders, the team now contains 7 Spanish riders, 4 French, 1 Italian, 1 Belgian and 1 Serbian. Euskaltel is the lone sponsor of the team and so the team has tried to become predominantly Spanish with 5 of the 7 riders being an integral part of our Climbing department and some of these have been with the team from the beginning, we will of course look to bring in more Spaniards before the season begins. Rafael Valls is once again our highest paid rider and admittedly he is likely receiving more money than others of a similar ability on the cycling scene but he should be an important rider for us again this season.

The 4 French riders are spread across the department and we are happy to bring in more French riders as it is a familiar market to us. Bouhanni is our highest paid sprinter and is our leader in that area at this moment in time, whether or not that will change is yet to be seen. Caruso and Cornu are both leaders of their respective departments and so have had their contracts renewed and they will likely both be riding for the team this season. They are both being well paid but it is much less than they demanded so we are happy to pay them what we have. The young Serb Milos Borisavljevic is the one rider who isn’t fully developed and so will ideally be honing his skills on loan in the PT this season.

This therefore leaves us needing a minimum of 6 riders which will become 7 if Borisavljevic goes out on loan, we are therefore in for what is bound to be another interesting and hectic transfer window.

Transfer Rumour: Valls on his way out?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Romandie/MG15_Romandie_4_007.jpg

Several rumours have been coming out of Spain regarding the future of Spanish star Rafael Valls. The 30year old stage racer has spent the last 2 seasons as the highest paid rider in the Euskaltel team and has been a solid performer throughout his time with the team with last season's most notable result being 2nd in the General Classification of the Tour of Japan.

It was apparently noted by the rider, following the number of riders released after the 2016 season, that the team seemed to be cutting many of the older riders which has led to the rider questioning both his importance to the team and his future with the team. He knows that he is the current leader in the Mountains but he also knows that he is not getting younger and feels as if this could certainly impact on the attractiveness of him to the Euskaltel management.

Euskaltel's team representatives have been questioned by the press in recent days and have responded with the following statement:
Rafael Valls has always been a highly valued rider within the team and the wider Euskaltel community. He has always made a concerted effort to perform at his best and continues to prove himself and produce results in what is a very competitive world cycling scene. He is correct in seeing that the team is trying to ensure a successful long term future but at this moment in time, he has an important role to play.
The transfer period is just around the corner and we are not able to confirm or deny whether or not he will be with us at the start of the season. For now, he is with the team and like every rider, he is vital to the success and future of the team. We look forward to another hectic transfer period!

Some sources across Europe and the rest of the world claim that there are teams across the top 2 divisions of the cycling circuit who will happily have Valls ride in their colours in the upcoming season. However, none of this interest has been confirmed by either the rider or the team. In their eyes, it is certainly a rider whose movements will be worth keeping an eye on in the weeks to come.

2017 Team Goals

Win, Tour of Beijing
A race that we have participated in in the past and had some success. Although this is definitely an optimistic win goal, we still believe that our riders will be capable of being successful for the first time in regards to one of our win goals.

Top 5, Tour of Eritrea
Another race where we have found some success in past seasons, the Tour of Eritrea has been an important part of our calendar and we know that a strong climber will be capable of achieving this goal.

Win, Isle of Man ITT
This is another win goal in which we think we can most definitely achieve. Cornu is a world class TT rider who is more than capable of winning this race so we hope that he hits form and gets the result we need.

Top 5, Kenya Mountain Classic
A mountainous classic in Africa is one where the team has a great chance of success. The team has been successful in African races in the past and our strength in the Mountains gives us hope that we will achieve this goal.

Top 15, Team Standings
Having finished 20th last season, the management are aiming for more progression this season and so we will be happy with a Top 15. The team will hopefully improve over this transfer window and we are confident that we'll be able to improve in the rankings as a result.

Departures

This transfer season has seen 3 older servants of the climbing department being transferred out of the team which is due to a slight change in the Management’s long term plans. We have of course been busy bringing in new riders but we start with saying our last good byes to this trio.

Rafael Valls

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/Romandie/MG15_Romandie_4_007.jpg

The 30 year old Spanish stage racer has been an integral part of our team during the last two seasons. He was our only real leader in our first PCT season and is the sole reason that we managed to avoid relegation (and a bit of luck). Last season a bit of the pressure was taken off his shoulders by leaders elsewhere but he didn’t drop his level of performance and impressed yet again.
We were in a position where we didn’t have to sell him but the Management wanted a reshuffle of the team which was impossible to do with the budget that we had. He was therefore sold to Repsol – Honda for a fee of 550,000. This does mean he’ll be in the CT for the first time in a long time and we know he will thrive at this level and we wish him and his team luck in their mission to promote this season!

Arnold Jeannesson

i187.photobucket.com/albums/x62/Smowz/Saxobank%20pcm%20story/a4_zpsefafc768.jpg

The 31 year old French climber has been with the team from the start and so it is very sad to see him go. In our only CT season, he was the leader of our very mountainous team which somehow managed to finish in the automatic promotion places. He has won the occasional stage and had decent GC results at all levels.
We didn’t initially plan on letting Jeannesson go but our need for some funds and wage space led to us accepting a 100,000 bid for him from Team Ticos Air Costa Rica. This means he’ll be joining Valls in the CT so hopefully they come up against each other on the climbs. We hope he enjoys the chance to ride at CT level once again.

José Herrada

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Eritrea/mg2016_eritrea_04_PCM0180.jpg

The 32 year old Spaniard has been with the team for both of our PCT seasons and has done alright on his own in breakaways but has done his job as a domestique very well. His experience on the climbs has been integral to our success in this terrain.
He is another rider who didn’t have to leave but our ageing Mountain department needed a bit of restructuring. Herrada therefore joined PT team eBuddy in a deal which saw puncheur Bauke Mollema join us. We wish José luck this season and hope he enjoys his new challenge at an even tougher level.

Welcome Back: Juan Jose Lobato del Valle

FLAMOHILTTSTARESRECCOBSPRACCFTRDHPRO
72626757737272697780616765

For the first time, we have signed one of our former riders. During our first season in the CT Lobato was our sole sprinter but back then he wasn't strong enough to be useful. During the last off-season his hard work has seen him become a much better prospect. He's Spanish and his combination of 77SPR & 80ACC was too good not to make an effort to sign him. We are extremely happy with signing him for a low wage of 75,000 and we hope he'll work well with Bouhanni and the rest of our sprint train to bring us more success in the sprints this season.

Ian Butler
Awesome to see Lobato make a return to the team where he'll fit in well Smile
He's got some good stats and his wage is not too high!

Puncheurs Signed!

Last season, the team switched some of its focus to the hills where we were previously not scoring and therefore missing out on a lot of points. Caruso, De Souza and Prades remain from last season and therefore we have seen a need to sign some more riders who specialise in the hills and that is what we've done.

Olivier Le Gac

24 years old : 70,000 : Pot 7 : Lvl 4.100
FLAMOHILTTSTARESRECCOBSPRACCFTRDHPRO
70697760737471526469747360

The 24 year old Frenchman arrived from Festina for a fee of 625,000 which we were more than happy to pay due to his young age, his nationality and his ability to ride well in the hills which will definitely bring something to the team. He is expected to be one of our co-leaders and we plan on holding on to him for many seasons to come.

Romain Zingle

30 years old : 90,000 : Pot 5 : lvl 4.100
FLAMOHILTTSTARESRECCOBSPRACCFTRDHPRO
72697768746970666676747168

The experienced Belgian arrived from Wiesenhof-Andritz for a fee of 540,000 which we believe is a great deal for us because he can TT decently well and has the acceleration to put in a fast attack or deliver a decent finish. We have always done good business with Wiesenhof and are very happy to bring in another rider who can be a leader for us. Zingle will co-lead in the hills as well and we hope he can do well here during the last few seasons of his peak.

Bauke Mollema

31 years old : 50,000 : Pot 5 : Lvl 4.100
FLAMOHILTTSTARESRECCOBSPRACCFTRDHPRO
70687470737270576164696270

Mollema becomes the first Dutch rider to represent the team after arriving from eBuddy in a swap deal that saw Herrada going the other way. He is a very useful all round rider specialising in the hills and we believe he will be a great domestique for us this season. We hope he will use his experience and be a calming influence on the team bus.

Luis Leon Sanchez
Climber/Puncheur Leader Signed!

We're here to announce the first of our two Mountainous leaders that we have signed for the new season. We will be announcing the second one shortly.

Edoardo Zardini

28 years old : 200,000 : Pot 4 : Lvl 4.100
FLAMOHILTTSTARESRECCOBSPRACCFTRDHPRO
69767767706666687268727472

The Italian joins us from the Free Agency on a wage of 200,000 which we feel is a fair wage given he is only 28 years of age and also a rider who has a lot of quality. His combination of 76MO & 77HIL means that he'll be the climbing leader who will be capable of gaining time in the more hilly stages. His 67TT means he won't lose too much time on the TTs. His 72SPR & 68ACC will hopefully mean he'll have the kick to pick up stage wins at the end of a tough stage. We plan to keep him in the team for a few seasons so hopefully he'll show what he's capable of this season!

Luis Leon Sanchez
Experienced Fighter Joins the Team!

In the recent days an unlikely rider signed a contract with the Euskaltel team. A signing which may confuse some but one which will attract support from the wider cycling community.

Niki Terpstra

33 years old : 50,000 : Pot 5 : Lvl 4.100
FLAMOHILTTSTARESRECCOBSPRACCFTRDHPRO
73556672706670627072846872

The old, experienced Dutchman is a signing which we believe could prove to be a great one on minimum wage. Niki has a standout 84FTR which should mean he will be out on the attack and get in the breakaway as much as possible. His 72TT should help him maintain an attack on his own while his 70SPR & 72ACC will hopefully mean he'll be able to win a reduced sprint from the breakaway. Our hope for Niki this year is that he'll grab a good handful of points from going out on the attack during races on all types of terrain. He becomes the second Dutch rider to be a part of the Euskaltel community alongside new signing Bauke Mollema.

Luis Leon Sanchez
Lead Climber & Stage Racer Joins the Team

An important part of Euskaltel's team has always been having a rider who will score points in the Mountains and in Mountainous Stage Races. Having sold Rafael Valls we knew it was vital to find a replacement earlier rather than later. Our initial target was David Abal but we lost him in transit (less than 5 hours from confirmation) and so we had a change in plans.

Jurgen Van den Broeck

34 years old: 125,000 : Pot 6 : Lvl 4.100
FLAMOHILTTSTARESRECCOBSPRACCFTRDHPRO
72797473727170586467746773

The 34 year old Belgian has had a long successful career and now finds himself as our leader for this upcoming season in the PCT. He comes in as a replacement for Valls, his energy stats are somewhat worse but his MO stat is the same and his HIL and TT stats are very similar. The main thing we are happy with is that his wage is only 125,000 which is very little for a leader in the PCT. Despite the fact that we have downgraded from Valls, it has left us with needed wage cap to execute our other transfer plans.
Van den Broeck becomes our second Belgian leader alongside Cornu and for the first time we won't have an out and out Spaniard leading the team but diversity isn't a bad thing and it certainly aids our long term plans. We still expect a good season from Jurgen and our Mountains department!

Croatia14
On that wage van den Broeck is an amazing steal!
pcmdaily.com/files/Awards2019/moty.png

Scorchio
Also can't believe that Jurgen slipped through Free Agency on such a small wage, even considering his age. A brilliant one year solution. Zardini on the other hand went expensive compared to potential peers. Balances out at least. Looks like these two will have a heavy load to carry while the exciting future talents gain experience. Good luck to one-time Nutresa arch-rivals Euskaltel for the 2017 season. Those CT battles in 2014 seem a lifetime ago now Smile.

Spanish Climbing Talent Joins the Team!

Croatia14: I cant find too many reasons to disagree with you there.
Scorchio: VdB and Zardini do balance each other out in wages and stats. They will have a big load to carry but I do think they are capable of doing what I require them to.

As a team that has in the past been very old it is no secret that some of our focus has switched to bringing younger riders into the team and of course we had to try sign a Spanish talent and that's what we did.

Enric Mas is one of many talents that we had our eye on going into this transfer window but he was one of the few Spanish ones and so we were determined to sign him. Some may argue that 200,000 is a lot to pay a rider who is unlikely to score a point this season but he is a great talent who will max out with 78MO, 77HIL & 77ACC. These stats will mean that he'll be a quality climber at age 26 with the potential to be trained or remain as a very strong domestique. He will be able to spend this season with us and we look forward to seeing him develop over the next 4 seasons.
