Hi Guys. I'm Ed Clancy.
I'm a cyclist.
I kind of got conned into doing this by British Cycling. I'm not a great writer so bear with me. I'm going to be doing a diary of my season on both the road and a bit of info on the track.
I race track with the GB team. I've won 2 gold medals in the team pursuit on the track at the world championships. On the road, I've started rising for Landbouwkrediet-Tonnisteiner. I have'nt done much on the road so far, my only win being the first stage of the 2005 Tour of Berlin, but I got signed by the team, I think for my track results more than anything.
Despite being a more powerful track rider, I climb well and harbour ambitions of becoming a good stage racer, maybe someone like David Millar, but a bit more climbing-orientated.
The team I'm riding with has two other Brits: Paul Manning, an experienced rider on road and track and a man who has helped me win both my gold medals. Ian Stannard, a great talent, especially on the cobbles and someone who I have raced with on the track.
Season goals this year are:
Top 10 in the Tour of Wellington.
Top 10 in a mountain stage.
Ride a few 2HC races.
Win something!
My profile is below:
My first 'report' will be at the Tour of Wellington. Hope you're not too bored of me already to read.

I think that this would make a great PCM 08 story, being as there is track racing in PCM08 Clancy's forte |

That's if Cyanide have made it possible for riders to both race on the road and on the track during the season
Good luck

Tour of Wellington Stage 1
The first stage is a 9.1 km prologue TT.
I had hopes for today but I woke up with a throbbing headache ( and no I wasn't drinking last night) and my aspirations were already over for today.
There were lots of British teams here meaning lots of GB team-mates and lots of friends.
Chris Newton was leading Rapha-Condor, on his way to 11th, 14 seconds behind the winner.
I was 4th rider of our team off the start ramp and I still didn't feel good. I posted an OK time, 37 seconds down in 62nd, with the same time as team-mate Paul Manning.
Pinarello's time trialling ace, Frederik Johansson, was out riding today and finished just 2 seconds off the pace, leaving him in second on GC.
Evan Oliphant is team leader for Plowman but dissapointed with 25th, 23 seconds down.
But it was Irishman, David McCann, who stole victory from Pinarello in a time of 12"36.

Tommorow is a sprinters stage for Tom Steels before the queen road stage, finishing on Admiral's Hill. I look to do damage to the time triallists there. |

Tour of Wellington Stage 2
A pancake flat stage where I would just sit in the peloton, conserving energy.
But others were thinking on a different wavelength, charging away early in an attempt to steal the days spoils.
It was Davis and Coleman from Pinarello and Plowman respectively. Our man Peeters was in the second group back.
They were pulled back and Ian Stannard led Steels into the sprint. Stannard was blocked early in his lead-out and, therefore, couldn't put Tom in a good position.
But Steels is a superb sprinter with a great head and got himself towards the front as soon as the sprint started.
He kicked early and with 100 metres to go he was level with Wesley Sulzberger of AIS. Who would win? Would it be the triple stage winner and GC winner of the Bay Cycling Classics. Or would it be a multiple Tour stage winner?
It was the first!
The screenshot mucked upops:
Wesley Sulzberger adds to his rapidly growing palmares and is the only important GC mover of the day, up to second.
But Tom vows revenge, knowing Sulzberger is on much better form.
We'll see who wins the battle of the sprinters.
I finished comfortably in the pack, saving myself for tomorrow's pivotal stage.

Tour of Wellington Stage 3
The queen stage of the tour where I think I can really make an impact on GC. There are two climbs, the latter being the toughest and I will probably wait and make my move there. I know that I quite literally have the power.
A large 9-man break went away and it was touch and go to wether they would be caught.
I wanted to contribute to the chase but I knew I couldn't and the team wasn't strong enough to help. So i sat in the bunch, on tenterhooks.
However, I had less to worry about on the penultimate climb, as the break were just metres away. But then my blood pressure was raised by attacks from within in the bunch, Morton of Drapac among them.
But the bunch set a high pace and, halfway up the final climb, pulled them back. I knew this was the time to go as I had a really fast attack in me, being the starter of the team pursuit squad, and with the nunch going at a fair lick others would'nt be encouraged to follow. So I stamped on the pedals and went skywards.
I opened a promising gap, but I knew I could not rest on my laurels. I got the big pursuiting gear going and headed for glory on my own.
I rammed my advantage home to take my first pro road win!
You may be amazed but I am not. Steven Cummings came second in the Trofeo Lagueglia in his first year and against much higher quality opposition. And, in truth, I rode this race just like a pursuit.
Look, theres my name at the top of the results!:

Tour of Wellington Stage 4
Another flat stage.
A break went away and we had to control it.
However, Peeters and Manning were tired after 3 hard days of work and it looked as though I would lose my lead.
But Stannard came to the rescue, flying through the corners and giving it everything to protect my jersey.
And it paid off, as with only 5k to go the break were pulled back.
But this meant bad positioning for Steels because, while Van Mechelen had followed Stannard, he had sheltered in the group.
He was 12 riders back with 150m to go and Van Mechelen was fading badly.
Wesley Sulzberger won again. But who is that squeezing into second?
I don't believe it! It's Steels!
If he can just get good positioning he can win tommorow.

Good win in stage 3 wacko. Whats happening to Doi - are you continuing or has his injury forced that story to retire? |

its not the injury that's forced the stoppage - there are some save-game issues i'm trying to fix - continuing in that depends on this story and wether i can fix that

Tour of Wellington Stage 5
A 40k flat criterium through Wellington. I hoped no splits got away and that I kept my jersey.
The TV break webt, containing only guys who were well down on GC.
But the sprinters teams decided it was a day for their men as they tried to gain bonus seconds before the TT.
At the start of the sprint Tom was well placed.
But his strength failed him and ended off the podium, the win going to the man from Trinidad, Emile Abraham.

No relevant GC changes as I keep my yellow jersey. With the deciding TT tomorrow the question is: can I keep it? |

Tour of Wellington Stage 6
The pivotal TT stage today that will probably decide the tour.
12 km will decide the winner.
They obviously knew I was coming and brought out a magnificient starting house to honour me.
One of the first favourites out on the road was Daniel Lloyd. A stage racer who finished off the pace.
Also riding was former Points Race World Champion and a GB team-mate of mine, Chris Newton. He finished 9th, 16 seconds back.
Also out on course was Fredrik Johansson of Pinarello, a very promising 'tester'. He came in 3rd, 8 seconds behind the winner.
By this point, it looked like Paul Manning, my team-mate at both Landbouwkrediet and GB, would take a well deserved victory.
But then David McCann showed up.
He dispossessed Paul of the lead and took it by 5 measly seconds. Always the nearly man, Paul was heartbroken.
It was my time.
Clad in the yellow jersey and astride my blade of a TT bike, I set off. I held myself back, not wanting to repeat the mistake of Ian Stannard who was 1st at the time check but lost nearly 50 seconds over the final 6k to finish way down.
I knew what I had to do.
And I did it!
12th was a good result and kept my lead in the GC by 29 seconds.
A great result for me and it shows I'm establishing myself on the road.
However, I head into tomorrow's criterium with only the race to lose.
I hope I don't. |
