Pierre Lacaille: A French Sprinter
DiCyc
Spoiler
Again with a new story! This time it is my first on PCM. I will (hopefully) finish my Peter Sagan 2013 Tour soon. I think that this story will go even slower than my Peter Sagan story as I am busy in November. Let's see how long this story can go! This story is inspired by many different members and their stories (I will hopefully write them here):

NOTICE: If I had copied a style to write, I apologize. The writing style might be close to some of your stories, it was never meant to copy your work.

EDIT: My English is not 100%, but hopefully it would get better.

Chapter 1: The Start

20-10-2014: Yvelines, France

I was waiting...waiting for the phone to ring. I thought I had done a good job, it was now up to the management to take me or not. Walking a bit around. What would happen if they never called back? I might probably have a second chance...RIIING! Well, what are you waiting for, I asked myself. I took it. What I didn't know, was that it was going to change my life..

Perhaps I am good...

23-08-2014: Saint-Omer, France

- Are you ready? This might be the ride of your life.
- Of course, why you asking?
- You're looking like one getting a breakdown...

Well, I might look like that, but Henry had all reasons NOT to be nervous. He was the best on my team. When we all were struggling, it was his fault to set the pace that high. He enjoyed it. Looking at us. Laughing at us. It was no secret that it was us between him.

I am some few months older than him. But he had riden bikes almost before he could walk. He had won over 20 races last year - the only one in our club to actually win.

We didn't like him, he was arrogant, but the management and our coach loved him - adored him like their own child. He was the only one of us, who could have a chance to come to a Continental team. I heard actually that AG2R was interested on him! He was that special!

The race started. If you win, and you are guaranteed a contract next year. I tried to be in front all day. It seemed to work. During the 20k banner, I decided to attack. I had the energy. Our coach would be angry on me, but I didn't care. If I won the race, I would have a chance to be acknowledged by Henry. By the team. By the coaches. And maybe follow my dreams?

Four other riders came to me. I saw that one of them was Rayane Bouhanni. We all know his brother and his kick. If he came to the finish with us, he would win. We started to pull a significant gap to the peloton. We could go all the way! The time flew past. Suddenly I saw the 5k banner. And the moto came for the last time...we had 50 seconds. Surely we will win! Or actually one will win.

When we were underneath the flamme rouge, I attacked. Now or never. I had never suffered so much as I did here. I flew past the final right turn. Now I could see the finish line. It was a uphill finish. I closed my eyes, hoped nobody would pass me. But I heard...no, it could not be true! I opened my eyes, just to see two riders in front of me. I sat up, so disappointed that I didn't even sprint for third.

- You did a great job there out.
- Thanks, monsieur.
- You did us proud there. That is what cycling is about.
- But I didn't win..
- Who care about winning. Cycling is not about winning. You did not give up, in cycling you should never give up. You was brave.
It didn't work this time, but surely if you do it again and again... practice makes perfect.
- ...
- Now get up and get a shower. You smell.

Oh, and Henry didn't talk with me once in the next few months. He finished 57th due to a "puncture" (but it seemed like he didn't have the energy on the uphill finish).

Sprinter

06-09-2014: Seon, Switzerland

I was so proud to get a chance in the French national junior squad kit. But when I saw who others were on the team. I saw a name that was too familiar. And I should protect him.

Screw him. I could protect all riders but Henry. Why Henry? I was shaking my head when we started the stage. It was the second stage of GP Ruebliland in Switzerland - from Seon to Seon, a flat stage.

I protected myself. I didn't know where any of my teammates were. It was not the most exciting day. No real breakaway, no real action happened. When we rode under the flamme rouge, the real action started.

My GC wasn't as good as Henry's, and since the next day was a time trial day, why no use all your energy on a sprint? It was completely disorganised, not like we see during the Tour. 500 meters. 400 meters..

Then I jumped straight away. I couldn't feel the legs, but the finish line came closer. I saw a shadow on my right side, trying to just sprint harder. 100 meters. 50 meters. I lunged, or rather threw my bike over the line. Did I win?

I saw my coach.
- What the earth did you just do there?
- Sorry, I...
- It was amazing!

I was confused. Shouldn't he be angry on me?
- You finished second...in a sprint!

I was shocked. At the time I never considered myself as a sprinter. I used to have no real strengths. I realised that a new world opened in front of me. I didn't need to attack any longer. If I worked a bit on my final kick. I could have a chance!

When I saw the winner on the podium. I was in my own thoughts.
- This won't be the last you will see to me.

The future

07-09-2014: Remouchamps, Belgium

- Do you want to show some French colors.
Adrien wanted me to race once on their team. After a permission by my club, I travelled to Remouchamps. I couldn't remember the last time I was in Belgium.

I got invited to race La Philippe Gilbert juniors after my few good results by Adrien's team. A hilly race, where I probably will help my "team" and then drop of.

Some few months ago I dropped of my lycées to follow my dreams. My parents couldn't understand why I dropped of. But was it a good idea? Could I go back?

I was probably thinking too much. I misjudged a right turn on a descent and fell. Amateur, some shouted. I quickly came back on my bike. But the peloton was already past me.

Cycling can be tough sometimes, my coach said. Our coach is pretty young, but he certainly knows everything about cycling. He was a young rider for Crédit Agricole, but an injury later forced him out.

However later that day he called me on my phone.
- Hey, how are you?
- Fine, just fixing some things.
- Good, listen Pierre, I have good news.
- Which news?
- Today a man came, he asked for you. He said, he came from Auber 93 team.

I dropped the phone.

The Calling

20-10-2014: Yvelines, France

I had waited since that day to get a call. He said that the last day would be October 20th. I waited. It was a nice morning anyway. I could probably take a ride..or two. Don't worry, I thought. You will get a new chance soon and you are only 18...RIING

- Hello?
- Hello, is it Pierre Lacaille?
- Yes, it is.
- Okay, it is Stephane Javalet.

I was so close to drop the phone again.

- We have seen you in some races. And you look very promising as a young rider. Our agent recommened you as a new rider. We have talked with your club, and we will be interested in getting you. Are you interested?
- Of course, of course!
- De La Plax, 14 o'clock. Okay?

During the meeting, we got agree with a contract on one year as a young rider with one race as a free element. I got my contract! I was exicted to see the team. But I didn't know the surprise, who got me..
