27/2-2016 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad 1.HC
Gent – Gent 199.4 km
The early breakaway is Verraes (Cibel – Cebon) and Lammertink (Roompot)
A series of others attacks start and after a while more than 10 riders are in front of the peloton. This seems to be too many, the peloton reel everyone back in. With 47 km completer the peloton is leading the race.
A new breakaway, this time Dmitriy Gruzdev with Van Melsen (Wanty), Pineau (FDJ) and Martinelli (Quick Step)
With 100 km left the breakaway got about 5’30, but from there the peloton raises the pace and gets closer and closer, the pace is so high that Zdenek Stybar (Quick Step) and Lars Boom loses contact with the peloton.
With 33 km left the breakaway is caught be the favorites, Lars Boom with help from teammates Lieuwe Westra and Laurens De Vreese is now back in the favorite group of 22 riders, Zdenek Stybar is 1’02 behind.
19 km left. Even though the pace is awful hard Stybar have now closed the gap, The 16 riders in front has 2’04 to the next group, all the pre-race favorites are here.
Sagan attacks on the last cobbles with Kristoff clued to his rear wheel, Fabian Cancellara counters.
Fabian Cancellara seems to be overcooked, while most of the other favorites catch up to Sagan and Kristoff, Fabian fall behind, Tom Boonen can’t keep up either.
9 riders are left in the front group when Sagan starts the sprint. Sagan is clearly the stronges on the last KM, he wins the stage in front of Zdenek Stybar and Alexander Kristoff
Lars Boom was over his limit at the last 2 km, basically nothing left to sprint with, he gets in as 8th in front of Niki Terpstra.
Evaluation:
Overall: An unexpected win from Sagan, his aggressive style on the last 20 km combined with a good sprint payed out. Trek must be very disappointed with Fabian Cancellara just making it within top 10.
Astana: A top 10 from Boom was expected, an OK result no more no less. The fact that Boom was left behind cost the team some extra energy, clearly a mistake to learn from.
Result:
1 | Peter Sagan | Tinkoff | +00:00 | 2 | Zdenek Stybar | Etixx - Quick Step | +00:00 | 3 | Alexander Kristoff | Team Katusha | +00:00 | 4 | Arnaud Démare | FDJ | +00:00 | 5 | Greg Van Avermaet | BMC Racing Team | +00:00 | 6 | Ian Stannard | Team Sky | +00:00 | 7 | Yves Lampaert | Etixx - Quick Step | +00:30 | 8 | Lars Boom | Astana Pro Team | +00:30 | 9 | Niki Terpstra | Etixx - Quick Step | +00:30 | 10 | Fabian Cancellara | Trek - Segafredo | +01:21 |

28/2-2016 SuisseGas Gran Premio Città di Lugano 1.HC
Lugano – Lugano 173.3 km
It is raining slightly, within the first 2-3 km two huge crashes brings 18 riders down. Important riders Filippo Pozzato, Stefan Denifl and Joseph Lloyd Dombrowski lose almost 3 minutes and are maybe even hurt.
For a short while Astana sets riders in front, making the situation hard on the riders trying to catch up.
Then Eros Capecchi attacks riding up to the sole riders in front, the relative weak Carlos Gimenez from Androni - Sidermec.
The peloton now take is easy, everyone left behind is allowed to get back. Ag2r La Mondiale leads the bunch forward.
The duo in front gets 5’30 without any reaction from the peloton, but with 100 km left Cannondale, CCC and Lampre sense the danger, they take over the peloton starting to reduce the distance.
With 40 km left the distance is 2'56, Capecchi now sets a high pace to stop the bleeding, immediately leaving his companion behind.
The distance gets down to 45” on the last climb, but on the downhill Capecchi increases the gap again to a little more than a minute.
The peloton never gets much closer, Capecchi wins the race with 51 seconds to the next group.
Alexis Vuillermoz (Ag2r) comes 2nd, just passing Jakob Fuglsang on the final meters.
Evaluation:
Overall: The many crashes on the very first km’s, made the way for Astana and Eros Capecchi, one of the few team’s having nobody down. Eros Capecchi is in great form and his very strong downhill helped him a lot near the end.
Astana: A perfect result for the team with two riders on the podium.
Result:
1 | Eros Capecchi | Astana Pro Team | 4h42'42 | 2 | Alexis Vuillermoz | Ag2r La Mondiale | + 51 | 3 | Jakob Fuglsang | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | Simone Ponzi | CCC Sprandi Polkowice | s.t. | 5 | Diego Ulissi | Lampre-Merida | s.t. | 6 | Filippo Pozzato | Southeast – Venezuela | s.t. | 7 | Franco Pellizotti | Androni - Sidermec | s.t. | 8 | Louis Meintjes | Lampre-Merida | s.t. | 9 | Esteban Cháves | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. | 10 | Dylan Teuns | BMC Racing Team | s.t. |

5/3-2016 Strade Bianche 1.HC
San Gimignano - Siena 212.3 km
The breakaway takes off without any reaction from the peloton. The race is very long so no team want to race hard over 212 km. The riders are Simone Antonini (Wanty - Groupe Gobert), Alessandro Bisolti (Nippo) and Luca Chirico (Bardiani).
Even though the pace is not very high it is very uneven, and many riders struggle on the gravel sections where the pace is often increased, is it hard to get the water bottles forward.
Never the less, the distance from the peloton to the breakaway continues to grow, after 56 km it is 7’26. Everyone else (197 riders) sits in the peloton.
Over the next about 70 km, the pace is upped in the peloton, sometimes splitting it into many sections. Astana loses Davide Malacarne very early, he never gets back. With 90 km left the peloton is reduced to 149 riders, the breakaway is 5’11 in front.
Davide Malacarne in “A1”
With 30 km to go, it is starting to look like the breakaway might not make it, the gap is now down to 1’46. The fight for position is started in the peloton, making the pace very high, everyone is fighting against the unavoidable elimination about to happen.
With 15 km to go Philippe Gilbert (BMC) attacks, closing in on the last riders in front Luca Chirico. Jakob Fuglsang tries to counter, but he is not strong enough today, he has to find his own speed.
The only rider able to catch Gilbert is Julian Alaphilippe, he steadily close the gap to finally beat Philippe Gilbert with some margin in the sprint. Laurens De Plus comes in 3rd at 1’05.
Fuglsang and Sánchez both struggle a lot on the last 5 km, coming in as 10 & 11th.
Evaluation:
Overall: Expected favorite win from Alaphilippe to crown a fantastic race by Etixx - Quick Step, also a fine race from BMC’s Philippe Gilbert, honoring his aggressive style.
The most disappointed team must be Sky, with Kwiatkowski’s 7th.
Astana: With a sponsor goal of winning, Jakob Fuglsang’s 10th is clearly below par.
Result:
1 | Julian Alaphilippe | Etixx - Quick Step | +00:00 | 2 | Philippe Gilbert | BMC Racing Team | +00:00 | 3 | Laurens De Plus | Etixx - Quick Step | +01:05 | 4 | Maxime Bouet | Etixx - Quick Step | +01:05 | 5 | Daniel Martin | Etixx - Quick Step | +01:20 | 6 | Diego Ulissi | Lampre-Merida | +01:39 | 7 | Michal Kwiatkowski | Team Sky | +01:39 | 8 | Jan Bakelants | Ag2r La Mondiale | +01:49 | 9 | Damiano Cunego | Nippo - Vini Fantini | +02:07 | 10 | Jakob Fuglsang | Astana Pro Team | +02:22 |
Spoiler 11 | Luis León Sánchez | Astana Pro Team | +03:26 | 17 | Eros Capecchi | Astana Pro Team | +05:02 | 28 | Andriy Grivko | Astana Pro Team | +07:56 | 41 | Diego Rosa | Astana Pro Team | +10:26 | 64 | Oleg Zemlyakov | Astana Pro Team | +12:29 | 145 | Lieuwe Westra | Astana Pro Team | +23:49 | 169 | Davide Malacarne | Astana Pro Team | +29:37 |

6/3-2016 Gran Premio Città di Camaiore 1.1
Camaiore - Camaiore 183.8 km
With no true favorite in the squad Gatis Smukulis and Valerio Agnoli was set to go in a breakaway, but the stronger teams seemed eager not to let anyone from Astana go, after some attempts each they had to give up. Instead it was Wyss (BMC), Laengen (IAM) and Coledan (Trek) getting away.
The break had almost 5 minutes. Smukulis having very good legs was finding it hard to wait in the peloton, on the second climb he tried again.
His efforts was wasted energy, a strong SKY train pulled him back with ease, but his attack seemed to have a side effect, now the peloton started to speed up, over the next 30 km the distance was reduced to 2’55. Now it was mainly Cannondale and Orica pulling.
With 20 km to the line, Laengen and Coledan was caught, now only Wyss was in front having exactly one minute, that could not last long.
Alexis Vuillermoz, Lars Petter Nordhaug and Simon Clarke attacked on the final climb, getting a nice gap fast.
Further back Franco Pellizotti and Eros Capecchi also left the peloton behind but it was settled between the three, Nordhaug outsprinted the others, winning the race in front of Simon Clarke.
Evaluation:
Overall: Lars Petter Nordhaug won over Simon Clarke both top favorites to win the race.
Most unexpected result was Vuillermoz podium. Also top 5 to Franco Pellizotti and Eros Capecchi was quite unexpected.
The worst performance was Esteban Cháves finishing 19th, without crash or defect
Astana: Eros Capecchi’s top 5 was a great result, in a race without a clear top leader.
Result:
1 | Lars Petter Nordhaug | Team Sky | 4h21'06 | 2 | Simon Clarke | Cannondale Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | Alexis Vuillermoz | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | 4 | Franco Pellizotti | Androni - Sidermec | + 52 | 5 | Eros Capecchi | Astana Pro Team | s.t. | 6 | Jens Keukeleire | Orica-GreenEDGE | + 1'35 | 7 | Jarlinson Pantano Gomez | IAM Cycling | s.t. | 8 | Cyril Gautier | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | 9 | Niccolò Bonifazio | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 10 | Simon Yates | Orica-GreenEDGE | s.t. |
